Glengoyne Whisky

Glengoyne sits so close to the boundary between Highland and Lowland that the distillery's stills stand on one side while its warehouses lie on the other. Founded in 1833, it has always held to a slow, unpeated distillation that deliberately breaks with the Highland tradition of smoke. Now owned by Ian Macleod Distillers, Glengoyne has become living proof that Scotland's whisky map is more a feeling than a line.

  • Glengoyne 10 year bottle with pale whisky and the distillery on the label
    Item no.: 22227865459-22

No peat, no smoke. Glengoyne dries its malt with warm air, which is why the ten year old tastes of apple and nuts rather than bonfire.

    The expert's description

Glengoyne 10 Year is a Single Highland Malt Scotch Whisky matured in a mix of European and American oak sherry casks along with refill casks, bottled at 40%.

The malt is dried without peat smoke, which is rare enough to be the distillery trademark. Without smoke, the sweetness of the malt and the fruit of the cask stand out more clearly, and the whisky is brighter than most Highland malts.

Distillation is slow. Glengoyne itself points out that the spirit runs more slowly through their pot stills than anywhere else in Scotland, which gives a clean and light spirit.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Green apples, nuts and caramel with a note of popcorn and fresh-cut grass.

    Palate

Soft and light with apple, liquorice and caramel. Nuts and a touch of oak beneath the fruit, with a dry malted close.

    Finish

Medium length, dry and malty with nuts and a hint of spice.

Glengoyne itself points out that their spirit runs more slowly from the pot stills than anywhere else in Scotland. The slower the distillation, the more contact the vapour has with the copper, and the cleaner the spirit becomes.

  • Glengoyne 10 year older bottle with green capsule and Glen Guin on the label
    Item no.: 505956-807534-841

The green capsule and the name Glen Guin give away that this bottle has a few years behind it. It is a discontinued version of the ten year old Glengoyne from when the label looked different.

    The expert's description

Glengoyne 10 Year Green Cap is a Single Highland Malt Scotch Whisky matured in sherry casks and bottled at 40%.

The whisky is the distillery classic ten year old in older packaging. Glengoyne uses no peat, and the malt is dried with warm air alone, so there is no smoke in the glass — only malt, sherry and fruit.

Bottles like this one are no longer in production. The packaging has changed several times over the years, and it is the ones with the green capsule and the old name that collectors look for.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Green apples, nuts and caramel with a light malty note.

    Palate

Soft and mild at 40%. Apple, liquorice and nuts with a dry malted middle and a touch of oak.

    Finish

Medium length and dry with nuts, malt and fresh-cut grass.

    Investment potential

Medium. Discontinued packaging from well-known distilleries is steadily picked up by collectors, and this one carries both an old name and a capsule colour no longer in use. The outturn is unknown, but the bottles will not be made again.

    Did you know?

Lang Brothers meant to call the distillery Glengoyne, but a clerk wrote Glen Guin in the paperwork, and that name stood in the books for decades. Only later was it corrected to the name we know.

  • Glengoyne 12 year bottle with golden whisky and a green label
    Item no.: 22227865459-7022

The distillery sits on the Highland boundary itself. The pot stills stand in the Highlands while the casks mature across the road in the Lowlands — same address, two regions.

    The expert's description

Glengoyne 12 Year is a Single Highland Malt Scotch Whisky matured in a combination of first fill bourbon and sherry casks along with refill casks, bottled at 43%.

Around forty percent of the casks are first fill and the rest are refill. That balance gives the whisky more weight than the ten year old without making it heavy, and the 43% gives it a little more body in the glass.

The malt is unpeated like the rest of the range. Without smoke it is citrus peel, coconut and sherry that carry the flavour, making this one of the more fruity twelve year olds from the Highlands.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Lemon zest, coconut and shortbread with toffee apple. Sherry, ginger and vanilla behind it.

    Palate

Round and malty with dried fruit, nuts and soft oak. The sherry is clear but does not lie over everything.

    Finish

Medium length and lightly spiced with nuts, malt and a dry oak note.

Glengoyne distils in the Highlands and matures in the Lowlands. The Highland boundary runs under the road in front of the distillery, so the warehouses on the other side technically sit in a different whisky region than the pot stills.

  • Glengoyne 15 year bottle with dark golden whisky and a green label
    Item no.: 059763-615-673

Twenty-five percent first fill sherry casks is a lot for a permanent bottling. It is the sort of cask split usually only worked out on paper by people rather too interested in wood — and here you can taste it.

    The expert's description

Glengoyne 15 Year is a Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky matured in a fixed mix of bourbon and sherry casks and bottled at 43% with natural colour.

The split is twenty percent first fill bourbon casks, twenty-five percent first fill sherry casks and fifty-five percent refill sherry casks. The bourbon casks keep the whisky bright, the first fill sherry casks add colour and dried fruit, and the refill casks tie it all together.

The malt is unpeated as in the rest of the range. Without smoke there is plenty of room for the casks, and the fifteen years give a clearly deeper tone than the twelve year old without making the whisky heavy.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Dried fruit, nuts and orange peel with a note of cinnamon cake and soft oak.

    Palate

Round and malty with raisin, walnut and dark caramel. The sherry takes up more room than in the younger expressions, with a firm spiced middle.

    Finish

Long and dry with nuts, malt and spiced oak.

  • Glengoyne Old Malt Cask 16 year bottle with the white Hunter Laing label
    Item no.: 059763-615-679

Fifty-five percent of Glengoyne own range sits in sherry casks. Here Hunter Laing has done the opposite and left one refill butt alone for sixteen years.

    The expert's description

Glengoyne 2007/2023 Old Malt Cask is a Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky from a single refill butt, bottled at 50%.

The whisky was distilled in June 2007 and bottled in October 2023 after sixteen years. The cask gave 677 bottles, which is a lot for a single cask — a butt holds around 500 litres against half that for a hogshead.

Old Malt Cask is the oldest range from Hunter Laing and is always bottled at 50%. The whisky is non-chill filtered and of natural colour, so the strength is the only thing adjusted.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Malt, apple and light caramel with a dry nutty note. The refill cask has let the spirit stand forward.

    Palate

Dry and malty with green apples, nuts and a hint of honey. The 50% gives bite, but the whisky is still bright in its expression.

    Finish

Long and dry with malt, nuts and peppery oak.

    Item no.: 059763-615-681

Same distillery and same vintage as the Old Malt Cask release, but no water has been added here. 57.7% is where the cask stood when it was emptied.

    The expert's description

Glengoyne 2007/2023 The First Edition is a Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky from a single refill hogshead, bottled at cask strength 57.7%.

The cask carries the number HL20035 and gave 319 bottles after fifteen years. A hogshead holds around 250 litres, half the size of a butt, which is why the outturn is smaller than the Old Malt Cask release from the same year.

The First Editions is the Hunter Laing range of single casks at full cask strength. The whisky is non-chill filtered and of natural colour, so it reaches the glass exactly as it left the cask.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Barley, citrus peel and vanilla with a sharp, clean malted note. The cask strength pushes the aroma forward.

    Palate

Powerful and dry with green apple, malt and white pepper. The 57.7% brings warmth, but the light character of the spirit still shows through.

    Finish

Long, warm and dry with malt, nuts and spiced oak.

About Glengoyne Whisky

Glengoyne is a distillery that literally sits on the boundary between Highland and Lowland, known for its deliberately unpeated style. For a newcomer, it's a light, fruity, floral whisky with no smoke at all; for the connoisseur, Glengoyne's insistence on the slowest distillation in Scotland - and therefore the most copper contact - is exactly what explains its unusually clean, fruity character, making the brand a quiet favourite among whisky clubs.

History & Background

The distillery was founded in 1833 and has for over 190 years maintained its characteristic, slow distillation process without the use of smoke in production.

Production & Style

Glengoyne distils unusually slowly and uses only clean air, not smoke, to dry its malt, giving a distinct, unpeated character.

Signature Style

Fruity, Unpeated, Round
The taste offers a fruity, unpeated character with a round, soft finish.
