  • Glenlivet Founders Reserve bottle with pale golden whisky and green label
    Item no.: 22227865396-225

In 1824, George Smith stood alone with his licence and his defiance of the Scottish farmers who refused to pay tax on their home-distilled whisky. Two centuries later, this bottle still carries his name forward as a tribute to the man who founded The Glenlivet.

    Expert Description

Glenlivet Founders Reserve is a Single Speyside Malt Whisky, bottled at 40% with no age statement.

The whisky launched in 2015 as a tribute to the distillery's founder and was intended to eventually take over from the popular Glenlivet 12 Year Old in the core range. Founders Reserve is matured in a combination of traditional American oak casks and new bourbon casks used only once, the first time The Glenlivet had used this cask type. The combination gives the whisky a creamy, sweet character with pronounced vanilla. On release, Founders Reserve won gold at the 2015 Scotch Whisky Masters, cementing its place in the distillery's range.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Citrus and a hint of orange open things up, carried by a gentle sweetness.

    Palate

Orange peel, pears, peach and blossom meet vanilla in a classic fruity Glenlivet style.

    Finish

Creamy and soft, with a lingering sweetness that rounds off the flavour nicely.

    Item no.: 2222786539-1079

A Finnish idea born in a sauna became a tribute to rye's role in the country's history.

    Expert description

Juuri Kyrö Rye Single Malt Spirit is a Finnish rye spirit, bottled at 46.3%, from Kyrö Distillery. The idea for the distillery emerged when five Finnish friends were sitting in a sauna drinking American rye whisky and wondered why no rye-based whisky distilleries existed in Finland, a country where rye has historically been a central crop. The distillery was registered in 2012 and built in an old dairy building in the village of Isokyrö. 'Juuri', meaning 'roots' in Finnish, is made entirely from whole rye grain, the most demanding grain to distil, highlighting rye's role in Finnish culture and agriculture.

  • Aberlour 12 year old Double Cask Matured bottle, Single Speyside Malt Scotch Whisky from Aberlour distillery
    Item no.: 22227865471-63

At the foot of Ben Rinnes two burns run together, and right there sits a distillery whose founder had his life motto printed on the label. Let the deed show. No grand words, just do the work. This bottle is the distillery’s most straightforward answer to what it can do.

    The Expert's Description

Aberlour 12 Years Old Double Cask Matured is a Single Speyside Malt Scotch Whisky matured in traditional oak casks and Oloroso sherry casks, bottled at 40%. The name says it: the whisky has rested in two different cask types, and the interplay between them is what the whole release is built on.

Aberlour's new make carries a distinctive crisp citrus character, and the sherry casks are there to complement rather than drown it. The bourbon and oak casks hold on to that freshness and a clear malt sweetness, while the Oloroso casks lay in raisins, orange and a soft spiced depth. The balance sits closer to Christmas cake than to a sherry bomb.

The distillery was founded in 1879 by the grain merchant James Fleming in the village of Aberlour, where the Lour Burn meets the River Spey. Every oak cask is chosen by the team behind the whisky, and the sherry casks are nosed through before they are filled.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Orange peel and honey first, over a clear malty floor. The sherry arrives as raisins and a streak of cinnamon, and a light nuttiness with a hint of soft caramel sits further back.

    Palate

Soft and round from the first sip. Baked apples, malt and orange marmalade open, then dried fruit and a mild spiced warmth from the sherry casks. The 40% makes it easy to drink, yet there is still a decent layer of fruit to follow.

    Finish

Medium length and soft. Malt, honey and a light dried fruit note that lets go calmly with no sharp edge.

Wild Turkey cultivates rye's spicy character with the same craft as its bourbons.

    Expert description

Wild Turkey Kentucky Straight Rye Whisky is the brand's rye-based expression, bottled at 40.5%. Wild Turkey's story begins with the Irish immigrant Ripy family, who settled in Kentucky in the 1800s, with Thomas Ripy founding the first version of the distillery in 1869 on Wild Turkey Hill in Lawrenceburg. The name comes from an annual hunting trip, where a distillery executive shared his bourbon with friends who were out hunting wild turkeys. Jimmy Russell started working at the distillery in 1954 and was named the distillery's third master distiller in 1967 — a role he still holds over 70 years later, making him the world's longest-tenured active master distiller. He is known as the creator of the recipe behind Wild Turkey 101, the brand's core product.

White Dog is the spirit in its purest form — before any cask has had its say. Everything you taste is the grain, the fermentation and the distiller. Here it is Mikkeller Black imperial stout, distilled at Braunstein.

    Expert description

White Dog Mikkeller Spirits Small Batch is an unaged New Make Malt Spirit at 42%, distilled at Braunstein Distillery from Mikkeller Black, Mikkeller's powerful imperial stout. White Dog is the American term for unaged, new make spirit — the distillate before wood has had any influence. Here it is used deliberately: no cask maturation, no colour, no wood. Just a clean distillate from a complex beer base, giving a fascinating insight into what the spirit is before the cask takes over.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Fresh and clear with cereal aromas, light fruit tones and a soft malt sweetness. Clear fermentation character throughout.

    Palate

Clean and direct. Malt, a light fruity sweetness and a suggestion of grain bread. No cask notes — everything is the distillate.

    Did you know?

The term "White Dog" originates from the American bourbon tradition, where unaged spirit was historically sold illegally and called "white lightning" or "white dog." Today many distilleries use the term to release their raw, unaged distillate — it is essentially a taste of the whisky's future before the cask gets to work.

    Item no.: 22227865486-5

Most bottles of Jack Daniel's are a blend of many barrels. This one is from just one — and you can taste it.

    Expert description

Single Barrel Select is drawn from a single barrel rather than a blend of many, giving a more intense, barrel-driven profile than Old No. 7. Barrels for this range are selected from the top floors of the warehouses, where temperature swings are greatest. Jack Daniel's Distillery was founded in 1866 by Jasper Newton "Jack" Daniel in Lynchburg, Tennessee, and is officially registered as America's first distillery. All production still happens on the same site, where the whiskey is filtered drop by drop through nearly 3 metres of sugar maple charcoal before going into new, charred oak barrels — the Lincoln County Process that defines Tennessee Whiskey.

Bottled at 45%, it carries extra power compared to the core range's 40%.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

The nose offers bold caramel, burnt sugar and toasted oak, more intense than Old No. 7.

    Palate

The palate is full-bodied with vanilla, caramel and spiced oak, backed by the higher strength.

Red wax seal, softer bourbon — Maker's Mark since 1958.

    Expert description

Maker's Mark Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey is the distillery's core expression, made from a wheated mash bill, bottled at 45%. Maker's Mark was founded in 1953, when Bill Samuels Sr. bought the old Burks' Distillery in Loretto, Kentucky. His wife Margie created the entire brand identity — the name, the square bottle and the hand-dipped red wax seal, still hand-dipped on every bottle today. Bill Samuels wanted to create a softer bourbon than the typical rye-based styles of the day and replaced rye with red winter wheat in the mash bill. The distillery was listed on the US National Register of Historic Places in 1974 and named a National Historic Landmark in 1980.

    The expert's description

Glenkinchie 12 Year is a Lowland Single Malt Scotch Whisky bottled at 43%.

The style is light and dry with flowers and citrus, as Lowland malt traditionally is. The distillery moved from a ten year old to the twelve because the two extra years in oak gave more vanilla and a rounder middle.

Glenkinchie lies in a glen by the Kinchie Burn near Pencaitland in East Lothian, about fifteen miles from Edinburgh. The distillery is surrounded by farmland, and the barley has never had far to travel.

  • Cragganmore 12 years Speyside single malt bottle in pale golden colour
    Item no.: 22227865428-10

Flat-topped pot stills and copper worm tubs. Two old-fashioned choices Cragganmore has never changed — and the entire reason the whisky does not taste like its neighbours.

    Expert description

Cragganmore 12 years is a Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky matured in ex-bourbon casks and bottled at 40%.

The distillery was founded in 1869 by John Smith at Ballindalloch and still draws water from the Craggan Burn alongside it. The unusual part is the equipment: the pot stills have short, flat-topped necks, and condensing happens in worm tubs rather than modern shell-and-tube condensers. Both give less copper contact, and the result is a heavier, more layered spirit. The 12 year old is the core expression and Speyside's seat in Diageo's Classic Malts range.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Sweet herbs and meadow flowers, honey and vanilla. Behind them sit a dry malted cereal note and a trace of resin.

    Palate

Strongly malted for a 40% whisky. Honey, poached apple and sandalwood, with a suggestion of sweet wood smoke arriving mid-palate.

    Finish

Long and malty with sweet hints and a mild herbal dryness at the close.

    Did you know?

Cragganmore is one of the few distilleries still condensing in worm tubs. The big wooden vats with their coiled pipes stand outside behind the distillery, and swapping them for modern condensers would change the whisky — one of the most concrete ways equipment shapes flavour.

  • Four Roses Single Barrel 50% 70 cl
    Item no.: 22227865412-775

One barrel, one recipe, no blending — Single Barrel is Four Roses unfiltered.

    Expert description

Four Roses Single Barrel Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey comes from a single barrel and uses only the OBSV recipe, one of the house's ten yeast-and-mash-bill combinations, bottled at 50%. Unlike the core range and Small Batch, there's no blending of recipes here. Four Roses was founded in 1888 by Paul Jones Jr. The story behind the name has it that Jones proposed to a Southern belle who said yes while wearing a corsage of four roses — hence the brand's name. The current distillery in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky, was built in 1910 in an unusual Spanish Mission style and has been on the US National Register of Historic Places since 2000.

Four Roses is known in the bourbon world for using no fewer than 10 different recipes, combining the house's five yeast strains with two different mash bills. Each yeast strain brings its own character — from spicy and floral to fruity and herbal — giving the distillery an unusually broad flavour palette to blend from.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

The nose offers ripe fruit, caramel and a light spicy sweetness.

    Palate

The palate is full and rounded with caramel, honey and oak.

    Finish

The finish is long and warm with a spicy, lightly peppery close.

    Expert description

Four Roses Small Batch Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey is blended from four selected recipes among the house's ten, bottled at 45%. The Small Batch range is meant as a more concentrated and spicier take on the core range. Four Roses was founded in 1888 by Paul Jones Jr. The story behind the name has it that Jones proposed to a Southern belle who said yes while wearing a corsage of four roses — hence the brand's name.
