    Expert description

Caisteal Chamuis Mossburn Island Blended Malt Scotch Whisky is the house's approachable no-age-statement edition, composed of single malts from several of Scotland's island distilleries, bottled at 46%. Mossburn Distillers was founded in 2012 to bring together the Eaux de Vie group's whisky interests. Rather than operating a single distillery, Mossburn is behind two Scottish distilleries — the peated island distillery Torabhaig on the Isle of Skye and the Lowland distillery Reivers — as well as a substantial portfolio of independent bottlings from other Scottish distilleries, composed and selected by the company's own blenders.

  • Ballathie House Hotel 8 years Single Malt Scotch Whisky house bottling
    Item no.: 505956-807534-848

On the banks of the river Tay, where salmon fishers stand in the water from first light, sits an old country house hotel with its own whisky on the shelf behind the bar. Ballathie House Hotel is not a distillery. It is a place that had a bottling made for itself, and that sort of bottle tends to be forgotten by everyone except the people who have been there.

    The expert's description

Ballathie House Hotel 8 years is a Single Speyside Highland Malt Scotch Whisky matured in oak casks and bottled at 40 %.

The bottling was made by Inverarity, a Scottish whisky house that has been behind a number of hotel and house bottlings over the years. Ballathie House Hotel sits in Perthshire on the Tay, known for its salmon fishing, and the bottle was made as the house own, not as a commercial release for the wider market.

It belongs to that category of Scotch whisky which exists in limited quantity and rarely resurfaces once it is gone. Eight years in cask gives a young, clean malt profile where the character of the spirit itself still reads clearly through the oak.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Young and clean. Barley, pale bread and peeled pear, with a single note of vanilla from the cask.

    Palate

Light and malty with honey and a hint of lemon peel. The oak stays discreet and lets the barley do the talking the whole way.

    Finish

Short and dry with a last malty warmth.

    Investment potential

Medium. Hotel bottlings like this one are made in small quantities for a single venue and are rarely repeated. That makes them hard to track down again, and they hold a solid position with collectors of Scottish house bottlings.

  • Flatnöse Rum Finish Blended Scotch Whisky bottle from Islay Boys
    Item no.: 22227865479-1106-197278352

Rum casks and Scotch whisky have travelled together since the trading ships began running the same route both ways. Here that connection is made concrete: a lightly peated blend that has ended its life in Latin American rum casks.

    The expert description

Flatnöse Rum Finish is a Blended Scotch Whisky finished in Latin American rum casks and bottled at 43% in small batch.

The base whisky is the same light, peated blend from Islay Boys that the rest of the Flatnöse family is built on. The difference lies in the closing period in rum wood, which among other things has contributed exotic demerara notes, the dark, almost molasses-like sweetness familiar from rum made on cane syrup.

The rum cask makes the whisky softer and rounder without the smoke disappearing. It is bottled without chill filtration in small batch, so the contents can vary a little from run to run.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Soft and sweet with demerara sugar, a light smoky edge and a note of ripe banana.

    Palate

Lively and lightly spiced with vanilla and demerara in the background, while the malt and smoke keep it from turning too sweet.

    Finish

Medium and soft with syrup, spice and a final touch of smoke.

Demerara takes its name from a river in Guyana where the sugar cane grew along the banks. Today the word covers both a type of sugar and a style of rum, and it is the dark, molasses-like sweetness of that style the rum casks leave behind in the whisky.

  • Flatnöse Blended Malt Scotch Whisky bottle from Islay Boys
    Item no.: 22227865479-1106-197278350

Ketill Flatnöse was a Norse chieftain who ruled the islands along the west coast of Scotland in the late 800s. Islay Boys have borrowed his name for a whisky rather lighter on its feet than the man himself is said to have been.

    The expert description

Flatnöse Blended Malt Scotch Whisky is a lightly peated blended malt bottled at 46% in small batch.

Behind the bottle stand Islay Boys, founded by Mackay Smith and Donald MacKenzie from the Rhinns peninsula on Islay. MacKenzie learned whisky production from Jim McEwan at Bruichladdich, and the firm has since built a set of brands around Norse island history.

This release is a blended malt, meaning malt whisky from several distilleries and not a drop of grain. The smoke is restrained and sits as an edge rather than as the main course, and 46% gives it body without making it hard. It is bottled without chill filtration in small batch, which means the contents can vary a little from run to run.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Pear first, with a faint peach behind and a note of honey tying it together.

    Palate

Pleasingly round, where walnuts and citrus blossom step forward and where the smoke registers without taking up room.

    Finish

Medium and soft with malt, nut and a final touch of smoke.

In the forest at Gaick they tell of the witch of Laggan, who had a heart as black as night. Cú Dhub is named after her — and the whisky comes in the same colour.

    Expert description

Cú Dhub Batch No 1 The Black Dog is a Blended Malt Scotch Whisky bottled at 43%.

The name means black dog in Gaelic and refers to a Highland folk tale about the witch of Laggan, who could change shape. The whisky is a marriage of Scottish malt whiskies, assembled and bottled by the Danish spirits company Mac Y. The dark colour is part of the concept and makes the bottle easy to spot on a shelf — behind it sits a thoroughly malted whisky with a clear liquorice character.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Roasted coffee beans and dusty malt sweetness, English liquorice and a hint of dryness.

    Palate

Creamy and intense. Sweetness and liquorice first, then vanilla and a distinctly spiced middle. The malt character runs right through and carries the whole flavour.

    Expert description

David Nicholson 1843 Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey is the brand's flagship, based on the original wheated recipe from 1843, bottled at 50%. David Nicholson started in 1843 as a grocer who distilled his own bourbon recipe in the back room of his general store in St. Louis. Weller at the Stitzel distillery. The Van Winkle family owned the brand until 2000, when it was acquired by Luxco.

  • Bottle of Thy Whisky Destillat 1 Danish New Make unaged raw spirit 50 cl
    Item no.: 22227865482-97590

No age. No cask influence. Just the pure distillate – exactly as it left the copper pot stills at Thy Whisky Distillery. Destillat 1 is the beginning of everything.

    Expert description

Thy Whisky Destillat 1 is a Danish New Make bottled at 40% in a 50 cl bottle. A raw spirit – unpeated, unaged distillate of certified organic barley, undiluted from the characteristic copper pot stills at Thy Whisky Distillery in Thy. New make is whisky's starting point: the distillate that is then filled into casks and over time becomes whisky. Tasting Destillat 1 is tasting the foundation for what Thy Whisky then builds upon.

For whisky enthusiasts, new make spirit is a unique window into the distillery's soul. Here there is no cask character, no age – only the pure taste of the distillate, the grain and the distillation process.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Fresh and green with malt sweetness, herbs and a touch of citrus. Purity is the key word.

    Palate

Light and fresh with the grain's natural sweetness and soft texture. No heavy notes – just the distillate's true character.

    Finish

Short and fresh with malt sweetness and a clean ending.

    Did you know?

New make spirit – unaged distillate – is technically not whisky, as whisky by definition must have spent at least three years in a cask. Nevertheless it is an incredibly important part of understanding a distillery, as it reveals the raw spirit's character without the influence of casks.

    Expert's description

Armorik Classic is a Single Breton Malt Whisky from the Warenghem distillery, bottled at 46 percent.

Armorik is named after Brittany's old Celtic name and is made from Breton barley and French wheat - a combination that gives the whisky a different character to most Scotch malts. Warenghem was the first French distillery to commit seriously to whisky, and Armorik Classic remains the house's most accessible bottling.

Warenghem is Brittany's first whisky distillery and has been distilling since the early 1900s, long before French whisky was a category most people had heard of. Armorik - the region's old Celtic name - is the distillery's flagship and a reminder that whisky isn't only a Scottish and Irish craft.

Two casks, one whisky. The Glenlivet's 12 year old core range rests on a simple idea: let two different oaks speak to each other until the balance is just right.

    Expert Description

Glenlivet 12 Year Old Double Oak is a Single Speyside Malt Scotch Whisky, matured for 12 years and bottled at 40%.

The whisky is part of The Glenlivet's core range and, as the name suggests, matured in two different cask types: first traditional American oak casks, then European oak casks that add an extra layer of flavour. The result is a remarkably floral, clean and soft whisky, where sweetness and a light dryness keep each other in check.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Floral and clean, with peach and a pronounced vanilla note.

Amber gold in the glass and three different sherry casks behind the scenes. Sherry Cask Edition is Tamnavulin's most layered everyday whisky, where each cask has left its own mark.

    Expert description

Tamnavulin Sherry Cask Edition is a Single Speyside Malt Whisky, matured in American oak casks and finished in three different types of sherry cask, bottled at 40%.

Where Double Cask relies on a single type of used sherry cask for its finish, Sherry Cask Edition goes a step further and combines three different sherry cask types. That gives the whisky a broader layer of complexity without losing the underlying Speyside expression from the American oak. Combining several cask types is a technique often used to achieve a more layered sweetness than a single cask can deliver alone.

The result is an amber-gold whisky where caramel, dried fruit and spice play off each other across several layers, from nose to finish.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Vanilla, caramel and banana, accompanied by notes of milk chocolate and a hint of fresh ginger.

    Item no.: 22227865446-18340

Forty-two casks, four grain recipes, one whisky. Hvenus is Spirit of Hven's take on a rye whisky that insists on complexity over simplicity, and the name is a small, double-edged love letter to both the goddess and the island itself.

    The Expert's Description

Spirit of Hven Hvenus is a Swedish Rye Whisky matured in American oak casks and bottled at 45.6%.

Hvenus is assembled from no fewer than 42 American oak casks, all at least six years old, each contributing its own share to the final grain recipe. The result after blending is 78.6% rye, 11.9% wheat, 4.8% corn and 4.8% barley, a composition that gives the whisky unusual breadth for a rye-based expression.

Neither chill filtration, added colour nor sugar is used in production, so the whisky stands entirely on its own, with only grain, cask and time as collaborators.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Intense vanilla meets freshly cut grass and a touch of menthol, an unusual combination for a rye whisky.
