Ruby gold in the glass and a full litre on the shelf. Tempranillo Cask Edition is Tamnavulin's fullest-bodied wine cask release, where Spanish red wine casks leave a clear mark of berries and syrup.

    Expert description

Tamnavulin Tempranillo Cask Edition is a Single Speyside Malt Whisky, matured in American oak casks and finished in used Tempranillo red wine casks, bottled at 40% in a 1 litre bottle.

Tempranillo is Spain's best-known red wine grape and the backbone of wines from regions like Rioja and Ribera del Duero. After primary maturation in American oak, the whisky moves into used Tempranillo casks, where it picks up the wine's deep colour and characteristic berry fruit.

This release stands apart from the distillery's other wine cask series by being sold in a 1 litre bottle rather than the usual 70cl, making it a natural choice for the home bar or for gift purchases in larger volumes.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Well-matured and lightly sweet with a touch of floral character over a base of ruby-gold tones.

    Palate

Full-bodied with red berries, raisin and fig, spiced with vanilla and a refreshing lift.

    Finish

Delicious and long, with syrupy notes that fade softly alongside a hint of dark fruit.

Tempranillo means "the early one" in Spanish, named for the grape's tendency to ripen earlier than most other Spanish red grapes, giving winemakers a valuable edge in regions with short growing seasons.

Frequently asked questions about Tamnavulin Tempranillo Cask Edition

Why is this release sold in a 1 litre bottle?

Tamnavulin has chosen to release Tempranillo Cask Edition in a larger bottle format than the usual 70cl, a common approach for certain travel and volume-oriented releases. The format suits both the home bar and generous gift-giving. The whisky's flavour and recipe are unaffected by the bottle size.

What kind of grape is Tempranillo?

Tempranillo is Spain's best-known red wine grape and forms the backbone of wines from regions like Rioja and Ribera del Duero. The name means "the early one", referring to the grape ripening earlier than many other Spanish varieties. Casks that held Tempranillo wine are used here to finish Tamnavulin's whisky.

How does Tempranillo Cask Edition differ from Spanish Grenache Edition?

While both releases use Spanish red wine casks for finishing, the flavour comes from different grape varieties. Tempranillo typically delivers darker berry fruit and more syrupy notes, while Grenache leans toward lighter red fruit like raspberry and strawberry. The two releases therefore offer different shades within the same base style.

    What causes the ruby-gold colour?

The colour comes directly from contact with the Tempranillo casks' wood, marked by the previous red wine. The more active the cask, the deeper the colour typically becomes. It is also one of the most visible signs of a successful red wine finish.

How should Tempranillo Cask Edition be served?

At room temperature in a standard whisky glass, the berry and syrup notes come through best. It can also be enjoyed with a single ice cube for a lighter, more relaxed style. The large bottle format makes it well suited for serving at gatherings where several guests will taste it.

Does this whisky work well in cocktails?

The sweet, berry-driven notes and moderate 40% strength make Tempranillo Cask Edition well suited as a base for simple whisky cocktails or as a flavour element in desserts. Its bold colour and syrupy sweetness can also add an interesting twist to classic whisky drinks.
