Amber gold in the glass and three different sherry casks behind the scenes. Sherry Cask Edition is Tamnavulin's most layered everyday whisky, where each cask has left its own mark.

    Expert description

Tamnavulin Sherry Cask Edition is a Single Speyside Malt Whisky, matured in American oak casks and finished in three different types of sherry cask, bottled at 40%.

Where Double Cask relies on a single type of used sherry cask for its finish, Sherry Cask Edition goes a step further and combines three different sherry cask types. That gives the whisky a broader layer of complexity without losing the underlying Speyside expression from the American oak. Combining several cask types is a technique often used to achieve a more layered sweetness than a single cask can deliver alone.

The result is an amber-gold whisky where caramel, dried fruit and spice play off each other across several layers, from nose to finish.

    Tasting notes

    Palate

    Finish

Complex and rich, with impressions of fruitcake and overripe apricot that linger.

    Did you know?

Under Spanish regulation, sherry casks must have held genuine sherry before they can be sold on to whisky producers, meaning every cask already carries several years of Spanish wine history before it ever meets Tamnavulin's spirit.

Frequently asked questions about Tamnavulin Sherry Cask Edition

Which three types of sherry cask are used for the finish?

Tamnavulin does not disclose the exact sherry styles publicly, but typically uses a combination that may include oloroso, Pedro Ximénez and fino-style casks to achieve different shades of sweetness and spice. Combining several styles is precisely what gives the whisky its layered character. The exact ratio between casks varies from batch to batch.

How does Sherry Cask Edition differ from Double Cask?

Double Cask uses one type of used sherry cask for its finish, while Sherry Cask Edition combines three different sherry cask types. That gives Sherry Cask Edition a more complex, layered sweetness with more pronounced notes of fruitcake and dried fruit than the simpler Double Cask.

What is the difference between oloroso and Pedro Ximénez sherry?

Oloroso is a dry to off-dry sherry style with nutty, spiced tones, while Pedro Ximénez is a very sweet, dark dessert sherry made from sun-dried grapes. Casks from the two styles therefore make markedly different contributions to a whisky, ranging from dry complexity to intense sweetness and dark fruit.

Why do distilleries often use several sherry cask types at once?

By combining several sherry styles, a distillery can achieve a broader flavour profile than a single cask can deliver alone. This allows for more precise balancing of sweetness, spice and fruitiness. The method is used particularly in releases marketed as more layered than a distillery's standard bottlings.

How should Sherry Cask Edition be served?

At room temperature in a tulip glass, the many layers of fruit and spice come through best. A single ice cube can tame the sweetness slightly if preferred. It also works well as a digestif after a meal thanks to its rich, dessert-like character.

Is this whisky a good fit for fans of sherry bombs?

Yes, though in a more restrained form than true sherry bomb releases from independent bottlers, which often use cask strength and first-fill casks. Sherry Cask Edition is bottled at 40% and therefore offers a softer, more accessible introduction to the sweet, fruitcake-driven sherry style.
