In the forest at Gaick they tell of the witch of Laggan, who had a heart as black as night. Cú Dhub is named after her — and the whisky comes in the same colour.

    Expert description

Cú Dhub Batch No 1 The Black Dog is a Blended Malt Scotch Whisky bottled at 43%.

The name means black dog in Gaelic and refers to a Highland folk tale about the witch of Laggan, who could change shape. The whisky is a marriage of Scottish malt whiskies, assembled and bottled by the Danish spirits company Mac Y. The dark colour is part of the concept and makes the bottle easy to spot on a shelf — behind it sits a thoroughly malted whisky with a clear liquorice character.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Roasted coffee beans and dusty malt sweetness, English liquorice and a hint of dryness.

    Palate

Creamy and intense. Sweetness and liquorice first, then vanilla and a distinctly spiced middle. The malt character runs right through and carries the whole flavour.

    Finish

Medium and sweet with liquorice, malt and a dry spiced close.

Frequently asked questions about Cú Dhub Batch No 1 The Black Dog

    Why is the whisky black?

The colour is a deliberate part of the Cú Dhub concept and ties into the legend of the black dog. The flavour is a malty, liquorice-driven blended malt regardless of what the colour suggests.

    What is a blended malt?

A mixture made purely of malt whisky from several distilleries, with no grain whisky. See more of the type in our Blended Malt Scotch Whisky.

What is the story behind the name?

Cú Dhub means black dog in Gaelic. The name refers to the legend of the witch of Laggan from the forest at Gaick, who according to the tale had a heart as black as the whisky.

    Does it work in cocktails?

Yes. The strong liquorice and malt character holds its own in a long drink, and the colour makes it visually unlike an ordinary whisky in the glass.

    How is it best enjoyed?

Neat, over ice or as a long drink. At 43% it takes dilution without disappearing, and the sweetness makes it easy to approach for most people.

    Who bottles it?

The Danish spirits company Mac Y, which assembles and bottles the whisky. The malt whisky itself comes from Scottish distilleries.
