Port Askaig Cask Strength Small Batch #02-2024 is an intense and characterful single malt whisky from Islay, bottled at a natural cask strength of 59.1%. The series is known for its small batch releases, with each edition made from carefully selected casks sourced from an undisclosed distillery on the northern coast of Islay – widely believed to be Caol Ila.
This release is composed of 34% Pedro Ximénez sherry butts, 28% Oloroso sherry butts and hogsheads, 36% refill butts and hogsheads, and 2% bourbon barrels. This diversity of cask types adds complexity, depth, and a well-balanced mix of sweetness, spice, and peat smoke.
Tasting notes:
Nose: Smoke and citrus harmonize beautifully, with notes of candied lemon, liquorice, coal, and dark dried fruit. Behind it lies the sherry’s vinous sweetness and a hint of fresh sea breeze.
Palate: Powerful and oily with burnt caramel, orange zest, star anise, and dark chocolate. There are distinct maritime notes, lightly salted smoke, and a dry minerality.
Finish: Long, dry, and persistent with notes of cocoa, lemon peel, and a hint of raspberry leaves. A classic Islay finish, but with more depth and elegance than many standard expressions.
Port Askaig Cask Strength Small Batch #02-2024 is a whisky for connoisseurs who appreciate high proof and a complex smoky profile. It is non-chill filtered, naturally colored, and delivers a pure and unadulterated Islay experience. Ideal for both collectors and dedicated fans of robust whisky.
