Port Ellen 1981/2000 Douglas McGibbons Provenance 18 years old Winter 70 cl / 43%Port Ellen (Closed) The history of Port EllenBy Ulrik BertelsenPort Ellen The distillery was founded in 1825 and is located in the town of the same name, which was founded in 1821 and is the second largest town in Islay. Port Ellen is named after Lady Ellenor, wife of the Laird of Islay Walter Frederick Campbell. The distillery was built around the great Loch called Leodamais - the deep Loch is also the landing point for one of the two ferry routes that run to Islay. The other docks at Port Askaig, close to the distillery Caol Ila. Port Ellen Since it closed in 1983, the distillery has achieved cult status among whisky enthusiasts around the world - the price of Port Ellen whisky has also increased significantly. A good investment One of the first official bottlings from DIAGEO - the owner of the distillery - is called Port Ellen Annual Release and it was released in 2001 at a retail price of around DKK 1,000, If you want to buy it today, you should expect a price around DKK 8-9000,- (Faktabox 1) Since 2001 and until 2010, there has been a regular bottling, the number varies from year to year, last year there was especially much "Hype" around the release, as only 3000 bottles were released worldwide - people started talking about - now their stocks are running out, but Port Ellen produced all the way up to 1983, so I wonder if they still have some in stock?

Peat & Grain Types The peat content of a Port Ellen varies from 40 to as high as 60 PPM. You can use PPM to measure many things such as sound, light, etc. the explanation of PPM: ppm denotes how many out of a million molecules are the substance in question... if you have atmospheric air with a CO2 content of 380 ppm, it means that for every million molecules there are 380 CO2 molecules. Many people think that the PPM content is measured after distillation, but in fact it happens before - Port Ellen, which contains 40 to 60 ppm, would be down to 6 to 8 ppm if it was measured after distillation. At Port Ellen they had a preference for 2 different grain types that they used in production. Namely the types called Golden Promise and Triumph, both of which have a high starch content and are perfect for whisky production.
