The colour tells the story before you've even tasted it - the ruby red long since turned warm amber, a sign of years spent in the company of oak and oxygen.

    Expert's Description

Dalva Tawny is a Portuguese Tawny Port, bottled at 19%.

The wine is a blend of several vintages, aged in oak for typically three to five years, where controlled oxidation gradually softens the tannins and develops the characteristic notes of dried fruit, nuts and spice.

The relatively small casks, called pipas, give a larger surface area between wine and wood than the large vessels used for Ruby, which explains why a Tawny matures faster and takes on its brown colour, while a Ruby stays deep red.

Dalva is the Port brand of the house C. da Silva, founded in Vila Nova de Gaia in 1933 by Clemente da Silva. Across generations, the house has built its reputation primarily around the Tawny and Colheita styles.

    Did You Know?

Tawny is aged in relatively small oak casks called pipas of around 550 litres - the smaller the cask, the greater the surface area relative to the wine's volume, and the faster it matures, which is the whole secret behind the style's brown colour and soft character.
