Admiral Rodney HMS Monarch St Lucia Rum 70 cl 40%

This 40% Admiral Rodney HMS Monarch Rum is aged in American oak casks that have previously been used for both bourbon and port and is only produced for Denmark. The rum is deep mahogany in color, packed with notes of raisins and vanilla and small touches of red berries. Soft and sweet with pleasant sugar, confectionery and candied fruit before a long aftertaste steals the show with hints of oak and tropical spices in a balanced and complex experience.

HMS Monarch Rum matured in both bourbon and port casks. Exclusively for Denmark

Since 1972, when Santa Lucia Island's only two distilleries joined forces to create Santa Lucia Distillers, they have gone from stereotypical mass production to today producing some of the world's best rums. The distillery, located in the Roseau Valley on the island, makes everything from Superpremium rum to Cream liqueurs on rum. With such great success that when Santa Lucia Distillers counted up in the summer of 2013, it had received no less than 209 international medals for their excellent rum varieties. Among them, they have been named the world's best rum distillery and have won four rum trophies, five double golds and 79 gold medals.

Historically, the European demand for sugar left the locals of Santa Lucia with the by-product molasses, from which they produced rum in the 17th and 18th centuries. In the beginning, rum was mostly drunk by slaves and sailors, where the sailors were entitled to a daily ration. But rum quickly became more profitable than sugar production...

Since sugar production on Santa Lucia stopped in 1962, the molasses has been imported primarily from Guyana. Recently, however, they have planted 5 ha with sugar cane, and more will follow.

The rum is basically produced by adding hot water to the molasses. The mash is poured into steel tanks, where yeast is added and the sugar is converted into alcohol. Fermentation takes between 24 and 30 hours at Santa Lucia. The liquid is then distilled in four different boilers – three pot stills and one column boiler. Depending on which boilers are used, the profile of the rum changes.
Santa Lucia ages the distillery's rum in American white oak casks, in which American whiskey has previously been aged. The barrels are 200 litres. In smaller quantities – for the exclusive rum types – port, wine, sherry, Madeira and Sauternes casks are also used.

When you store spirits in the tropics, the maturation of it is accelerated by something like 2 ½ times compared to Europe, due to the higher temperature and humidity. This means that rums over 10 years often become very woody and tannic. At Santa Lucia, therefore, old casks are almost always blended with newer casks, so that there is a fine balance in the blend - and therefore the age is not written on the rum either...
Santa Lucia rum is as pure as almost possible. Apart from a little caramel for the sake of colour, nothing else is added. No sugar, liqueur, brandy, sherry or other pork stuff.
