The rum is distilled on the world's last surviving wooden column still, a historic piece of distillation technology that East London Liquor Company has brought into use at its distillery in Bow Wharf, East London. After distillation, the rum matures for 3 years in ex-bourbon casks. The company was founded in 2014 and was the first distillery in the East End for over 100 years, built on the idea of "decent booze, for a decent price, from decent people".

The rum was created to mark the turn of the millennium and comes from Demerara Distillers in Guyana, which distils on a collection of historic stills, including the Port Mourant pot still, the Enmore wooden coffey still and the Versailles pot still. After distillation, the rum is matured for at least 25 years in casks that previously held bourbon, giving it, over the years, a silky-smooth structure many compare to old cognac.

The Port Mourant still is the world's last surviving wooden double pot still of its type and produces a markedly heavier, smokier, more earthy rum than most other Demerara still styles. Being part of El Dorado's Rare Collection, the release is neither filtered nor sweetened, letting the still's raw, historic character come through undisturbed.

In 1796 the Spanish king banned the very recipe behind this Mexican rum because it had become so popular in Spain that it threatened domestic producers. The name Prohibido, "the forbidden one", is a tribute to that story.
