Some vintages simply linger. 2008 was such a year at Destilerías Unidas in Venezuela - casks that matured into something beyond the ordinary, which the distillery chose to see all the way through with a long finish in sherry casks.

Diplomatico Single Vintage 2008 Sherry Cask Finish is a Venezuelan Rum distilled in 2008 and bottled at 43%.

The rum belongs to Diplomatico's Prestige Range, where a Single Vintage is only released in years when selected casks from a single distillation year turn out to have developed exceptionally. The base is cane molasses, and part of the rum's weight comes from the distillery's signature method - batch kettle distillation on pot still - which gives a heavier, more oily rum than most column still-based rums.

After 12 years of maturation in a combination of ex-bourbon casks, ex-single malt whisky casks and new American oak casks, the rum was moved onto first-fill Oloroso sherry casks for a final finishing period. It is here the dark, dried fruits and the spiced sweetness really settle into the glass.

Dominican 2011/2021 Blackadder Raw Cask 10 Year Finest is a Dominican Rum from a single cask, aged for 10 years and bottled at 60.1%.

The rum is bottled by Blackadder International, the family-run Scottish bottler founded in 1995 by Robin Tucek, without any filtration or added colour, in line with the rest of the Raw Cask range. Compared to Blackadder's Trinidadian releases, the Dominican style is traditionally lighter and more rounded, something this rum confirms despite its relatively high natural cask strength. The rum was distilled in 2011 and bottled in 2021 after 10 years of ageing.

Don Q 151 Overproof is a Puerto Rico Rum from Destilería Serrallés, a blend of light and dark rum aged a minimum of 3 years in used American oak casks and bottled at 75.5%.

The rum is one of very few overproof releases from Puerto Rico and was only the second of its kind from a local distillery when it launched. Despite the high strength, the nose is relatively tame for an overproof rum, with clear notes of vanilla, caramelised sugar and smoke, while the full intensity only reveals itself on the palate.

The rum isn't intended to be sipped neat, but as a powerful base in tiki and cocktail drinks.
