Dos Continentes ("Two Continents") undergoes a triple maturation process. The rum first rests for 6 years at its place of origin in an ex-bourbon cask, before being moved to a former sherry cask and then to a former banyuls cask from southern France for a further 4 years of solera ageing. This journey through three cask types and three cultures - Caribbean, Spanish and French - creates a fusion that, according to A. Michler, brings harmony between flavour and aroma.

The rum is blended and matured from carefully hand-selected Barbados rum. Behind the A. Michler brand is a rum house with roots stretching back to the historic Albert Michler distillery, today part of the wider Caribbean rum scene.

British Royal Navy Miniature with Certificate is a dark Imperial Rum of unknown distillery, bottled at 54% in a small 5 cl collector's bottle with an accompanying certificate of authenticity.

The rum comes from one of the original "One Imperial Gallon" bottles carried aboard British Navy ships for distributing the daily "tot of rum". When the tradition was abolished in 1970, remaining stocks were recalled, and some of the rare gallon bottles only resurfaced many years later. To make the contents available to collectors, part of the rum has been bottled into small 5 cl bottles, each with a numbered certificate documenting its origin.

Only 70 of these miniature bottles with certificate have been produced, making each one a tangible piece of British Naval rum history - an era when navy strength sat well above ordinary rum, and where the very term "over proof" arose as a test of whether the rum could ignite gunpowder.

Ron Colon Salvadoreno Red Banana Oleo is an El Salvador Rum with banana oleo, bottled at 40.5%.

The rum is produced by Ron Colón, founded in 2018 by Thurman Wise and Pepijn Janssens, and is blended from aged column-still rum from the Licorera Cihuatán distillery in El Salvador with unaged and aged rum from the Jamaican distilleries Worthy Park, Hampden and Monymusk. The master distiller and blender is Gabriella Ayala. The Red Banana edition adds an "oleo saccharum" of red bananas, a classic bartending technique where the fruit's oils and sweetness are extracted and infused into the rum, giving a pronounced fruity layer on top of the Central American-Jamaican base.

The result is a sweet, fruity rum, where ripe banana meets the rum's classic spice and molasses base.

There is rum you pour, and there is rum you approach carefully. DOK belongs firmly to the second group. Overripe banana, varnish, olive brine and something like fruit that went one step too far, pressed into two bottles, one of which has never seen the inside of a cask.

The set contains Rum4u Jamaica Dok 2022 Single Cask Rum 50 cl 79% and Rum4u Jamaica Dok Miniature Unaged Distillate 5 cl 80%. The large bottle is matured rum with six extra months in a used Madeira cask, the small one is the spirit in its raw state. This cask carries the number 1.1-22 and produced 79 bottles, which happens to match the strength. The Madeira cask was chosen as a counterweight: it lays dried fruit and a tart sweetness beneath the esters without muting them.

Tasting notes

Nose

Ferocious from the first second. Banana skin, acetone, brined olive and overripe pineapple, with tar and old timber underneath. The miniature is even more direct, sour and green, while the matured version has picked up raisin and fig from the Madeira cask.

Palate

With water in the glass it spreads out: fermented fruit, brine, black pepper and an oily texture that clings to the tongue. Neat, it is mostly the strength doing the talking. The Madeira runs through the middle as a dry, tart stripe of fruit and keeps the esters from reading as pure solvent.

Finish

Very long. Liquorice root, burnt sugar and a saline, almost mineral edge that stays for minutes. The mouth feels warm long afterwards, and the finish shifts character every time you come back to the glass.

Three Danes found a single cask at W.I.R.D., left it eighteen extra months on oloroso and set a bottle of raw distillate beside it, so you can see for yourself what the wood changed.

The set contains Rum4u Barbados W.I.R.D. 2022 Single Cask Rum 50 cl 60.5% and Rum4u Barbados W.I.R.D. Miniature Unaged Distillate 5 cl 60%. The small bottle is the spirit straight off the still, without an hour in wood. The large bottle is that same spirit after maturation, the final 18 months of it in a used oloroso sherry cask. The rum comes from West Indies Rum Distillery at Brighton, just north of Bridgetown on Barbados. This cask carries the number 4.1-22 and yielded 63 bottles. Once the cask is dry, no more of exactly this rum will appear.

Tasting notes

Nose

The miniature is sharp and green with cane juice, olive and a faint whiff of glue. The matured rum stands somewhere else entirely: dried figs, walnut, orange peel and a dark, nutty tone from the sherry cask, with 60.5% sitting behind it all as warmth.

Palate

Dry and broad shouldered. Oloroso lays raisin and walnut shell beneath the banana and coconut of the Barbados spirit, and the cask strength drives everything forward. A few drops of water open it up into dark marmalade, cinnamon and bitter oak.

Finish

Long, dry and peppery. Walnut hangs on longest, and a faint saline edge arrives at the end, the kind you know from proper oloroso. Go back to the miniature afterwards and it tastes almost raw by comparison.
