Rum Categories

Are you, like us at Whisky.dk, absolutely crazy about rum? Then this page is just for you. On this page you can find a universe of rum. We have a great passion for rum and we really want to share it with you.

Rum is made from cane sugar and water. This mixture is fermented to form a liquid containing 8-10% alcohol. It is then distilled to an alcohol percentage of up to 90% and then stored on oak barrels. Once the rum has been stored, it is diluted to 40-43% alcohol and filled into bottles.

Below you can see our large selection of rum. We have many different brands and variants. By clicking on the categories below, you see different kinds of rum variants.

  • Clear bottle of colourless rum with a bright, minimalist HSE label
    Item no.: 22227865379-9695

No cask ageing, no colour, no detours – just fresh sugarcane juice distilled and bottled almost immediately.

    Expert description

Habitation St. Etienne Martinique Rhum Agricole Blanc is an AOC Martinique Rhum Agricole, distilled from fresh sugarcane juice and bottled at 40% with no prior cask ageing.

Because Martinique's AOC rules allow rhum agricole to be sold immediately after distillation with no minimum ageing requirement, the Blanc expression retains the full fresh, green cane character that is otherwise gradually softened by years of cask influence in the house's other releases such as VSOP and XO. This makes it the purest, most direct introduction to what rhum agricole from Martinique actually tastes like.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

An explosion of fresh aromas with dominant notes of fresh sugarcane and a light floral touch, complemented by tropical fruit, mashed banana and hibiscus.

    Palate

Clean and powerful with vanilla, powdered sugar, grassy cane, lime rind, pepper, a hint of chili, pineapple and banana.

    Finish

Peppery and long, with a persistent finish that echoes the fresh cane character.

Unlike VSOP and XO from the same house, the Blanc expression needs no cask ageing at all, because Martinique's AOC rules allow white rhum agricole to be sold straight after distillation – one of the few rum categories in the world where this is permitted.

No cask ageing, no filter for time, just fresh sugar cane juice from Martinique distilled and bottled directly, so the island's soil and climate speak without detour.

    Expert Description

Habitation St. Etienne Martinique Rhum Agricole Blanc is a Martinique Rhum Agricole, distilled from fresh sugar cane juice and bottled unaged at 50%.

This white rhum agricole from HSE, whose full name is Habitation Saint-Étienne, shows the distillate's pure character with no cask influence at all. Unlike the house's Black Sheriff, which ages in American bourbon casks, this release goes straight from the distillation column to the bottle, preserving the fresh, green intensity of the newly harvested cane. The intense, bold nose combines floral and fruity notes with a hint of white pepper, while the palate shows the cane's full ripeness.

The result is a clear, powerful rhum that shows Martinique's agricole tradition in its purest form.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Intense and bold with floral and fruity notes plus a hint of white pepper over fresh sugar cane.

    Palate

Clean and powerful with notes of fully ripe sugar cane, supported by a light peppery sharpness.

    Finish

Long and lingering with a lightly peppery conclusion that builds on the fresh sweetness.

  • Dark bottle of amber-coloured rum with elegant black and gold HSE label
    Item no.: 22227865379-11

Some of the rums in this bottle are older than most of the people drinking it – a few of HSE's oldest stocks date all the way back to the 1960s.

    Expert description

Habitation St. Etienne Martinique Rhum Agricole Extra Vieux XO is an AOC Martinique Rhum Agricole, blended from rums matured for at least a decade in carefully selected Cognac casks and bottled at 43%.

The XO expression draws on some of the oldest stocks in HSE's cellars at Habitation Saint-Étienne, some of which date back to the 1960s. Because the rum has rested in Cognac casks rather than the more common American oak, it takes on a deep amber colour and a profile that leans on Cognac tradition's finesse rather than rum's typical sweetness.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Complex yet not overwhelming, with light, fresh fruit notes, a grassy character and sweet mocha, complemented by pronounced notes of cocoa, mocha and pale tobacco with a hint of black pepper and nutmeg.

    Palate

An explosion of flavour, with dry, strong oak, tobacco and smoke, balanced by a pleasant, light floral sweetness.

    Finish

    Surprisingly long and warming.

On an old sugarcane plantation in Gros-Morne, this rum matures for years while the protected brick buildings around the casks are a reminder that distilling here goes back to the 1800s.

    Expert description

Habitation St. Etienne Martinique Très Vieux VSOP is an AOC Martinique Rhum Agricole, matured in American oak casks and bottled at 45%.

The rum is distilled at the Simon distillery in Le François and then aged in the historic cellars at Habitation Saint-Étienne itself in Gros-Morne, where the Hayot family has restored the old sugarcane plantation since 1994. Because it is a Rhum Agricole, it is pressed exclusively from fresh sugarcane juice rather than molasses, giving it a greener, creole starting point that the long ageing in American oak then layers with caramel and spice.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Candied fruit such as apricot, peach and cantaloupe, followed by roasted almonds, caramel, milky coffee and a touch of clove, with a hint of grape must.

    Palate

Broad and warm on the attack, settling softly on the palate without heaviness, smooth and round with an aromatic finish mirroring the nose.

    Finish

Creole and spiced with a fine, lingering warmth from the long cask ageing.

The rum comes from Hampden Estate in Trelawny, Jamaica, whose roots go back to 1753 and which is known for its traditional high-ester production using wild fermentation and nothing but its own spring water added. Item no.: 2225395-8244

Hampden Estate Coffret 8 Marks Collection 1 Year Ex. Bourbon Cask Pure Single Jamaica Rum 8x20 cl 52%

Hampden Estate Coffret 8 Marks Collection 1 Year Ex-Bourbon Cask is a rare and deeply fascinating release that gives an outstanding insight into Hampden's distillate - this time with an extra layer of complexity from a year of ageing in ex-bourbon casks. Where the original 8 Marks collection shows the distillery's raw and unadulterated style straight from the pot still, this version adds a subtle but noticeable dimension of cask that rounds off and highlights the differences between the eight marks in a new way.

Each of the eight bottles represents a specific mark, varying in ester level, fermentation length and aromatic profile. After a year of ageing in ex-bourbon casks, the distillates gain a softer texture, a more integrated sweetness and a light vanilla and coconut-touched depth, without losing the wild Hampden character. The lower ester marks appear fresh and fruity with notes of citrus, sugar cane and green banana, now rounded off by mild bourbon cask sweetness. The middle marks show clear tropical fruit, pineapple, lime, olive and fermented funk, gaining extra warmth and structure from the cask. The highest ester marks remain explosive, intense and aromatically extreme, but the bourbon cask adds a light creaminess and a more harmonious transition between the sharp, acidic and fruity elements.

The collection works as a study in how even short ageing can affect a distillate with such a distinct identity as Hampden's. It is an opportunity to taste how the individual marks develop when given time on wood, and how the bourbon cask interacts with ester levels from the mild to the extreme. For enthusiasts it gives a deeper understanding of Hampden's craft, and for tasting panels and masterclasses it is an invaluable tool for exploring the building blocks of rum.

Hampden Estate Coffret 8 Marks Collection 1 Year Ex-Bourbon Cask is a release made for nerding out, immersion and experiments. It shows both the differences and the connections between the eight marks and demonstrates how even small changes in ageing can create new nuances in one of the world's most characterful distillates. It is a collection that speaks directly to collectors, enthusiasts and anyone who wants to understand Hampden from the ground up.

Hampden Estate Coffret 8 Marks Collection Pure Single Jamaica Rum 8x20 cl 60%

Hampden Estate Coffret 8 Marks Collection is one of the most fascinating and educational releases you can get from Hampden Estate - a complete tasting set that gives a unique insight into the distillery's DNA. Hampden is known for its distinctive esters, its long fermentations and its traditional pot still production, and in this collection you get eight different "marks", each representing a specific style, a specific ester level and a specific aromatic direction. It is a journey through everything from the milder and more fruity expressions to the extreme, explosive and almost overwhelming high-ester marks that have made Hampden famous worldwide.

Each 20 cl bottle is bottled at 60% and shows a clean, unadulterated version of the distillate without the influence of cask ageing. This means you taste Hampden in its most raw and authentic form, where the differences between the individual marks stand razor-sharp. The lower ester marks offer notes of fresh fruit, sugar cane, citrus and light fermented nuances, while the middle marks move into deeper tropical fruit, pineapple, banana, lime, olive and more pronounced funk. The highest ester marks are intense, wild and extremely aromatic with explosive notes of overripe fruit, glue, acetone, rubber, spices and an almost electric acidity that only Hampden can deliver.

The collection works both as a study in Jamaican rum production and as an experience for enthusiasts wanting to understand how ester levels and fermentation affect flavour and aroma. It is a rare opportunity to taste the individual components that are normally blended in Hampden's commercial bottlings, giving a deeper understanding of how the distillery's character is built up from the ground.

Hampden Estate Coffret 8 Marks Collection is not just a rum release, but a tool for nerding out, immersion and flavour experiments. It is ideal for masterclasses, rum tastings or for the collector who wants a piece of Hampden's history and craft in its purest form. It is a release that shows why Hampden is considered one of the world's most unique and uncompromising distilleries.

    Expert description

Havana Club 7 Años is a Cuban Rum matured for 7 years in ex-bourbon oak casks and bottled at 40%.

The rum comes from Havana Club, the most internationally recognised name in Cuban rum, produced according to a tradition dating back to 1934. 7 Años is the brand's more mature, darker expression, where the youngest rum in the blend has matured for at least seven years in casks that previously held American bourbon. The result is a dark, complex rum, far more serious than the lighter, white expressions of the brand.

    Expert description

Havana Club Añejo Especial is a Cuban Rum, column distilled and matured for up to 5 years, bottled at 37.5%.

The rum comes from Havana Club and is assembled from several vintages of rum, which after the initial maturation are blended and then returned to cask before bottling, this is the "double aged" process that gives the name its "especial." The result is a golden rum with a lightness usually associated with white rums, combined with a fruity complexity that would otherwise require longer maturation.

Hell or High Water Spiced is a spiced Caribbean Rum, a blend of selected rums assembled by One Eyed Spirits and flavoured with vanilla, cinnamon, cardamom, anise and coriander, bottled at 38%.

The brand, originally called Ron de Jeremy before its 2020 rebrand, uses this Small Batch edition to create a more approachable and playful take on rum than the house's ambitious XO blend. The base rum comes from several Caribbean distilleries and is then spiced with a handful of warm, sweet spices, a style that draws on the long tradition of flavoured rum in the Caribbean.

Because the rum is bottled at 38%, below the 40% the EU normally requires to call a product rum, it's technically classified as a spirit drink, though in style and character it belongs among the spiced rums.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Sweet vanilla and warm cinnamon, with a hint of cardamom and a light aniseed aroma.

    Palate

Soft sugarcane sweetness met by coriander and spice, with a round, lightly caramelised body.

    Finish

Medium length with lingering warm spice and a sweet, gentle close.

The schooner Kirk and Sweeney once sailed rum into the USA during prohibition - today the name lives on in a bottle where even the cork has a story to tell.

    Expert Description

Kirk & Sweeney Gran Reserva is a Rum from the Dominican Republic, a blend of rums aged in American and French oak casks and bottled at 40%.

Gran Reserva is the more mature expression in the Kirk & Sweeney range, produced like its siblings by J. Armando Bermudez & Co. in Santiago de los Caballeros. The name comes from a famous smuggling schooner that carried rum from the Caribbean into dry USA in the 1920s - a chapter of rum history the brand carries in both its name and its details.

Around the cork sits a thin brass band with coordinates pointing back to the American east coast, where the smuggling ship was once discovered - a small, tangible reminder of where the rum's story truly begins.
