Rum4u Jamaica Dok Gift Set w. Miniature Single Cask Rum 5+50 cl 79% is a gift set holding a Single Cask Rum from Jamaica finished in an ex-Madeira cask and bottled at cask strength, 79%, alongside a miniature of unaged distillate at 80%.

The set contains Rum4u Jamaica Dok 2022 Single Cask Rum 50 cl 79% and Rum4u Jamaica Dok Miniature Unaged Distillate 5 cl 80%. The large bottle is matured rum with six extra months in a used Madeira cask, the small one is the spirit in its raw state. It is rare to taste a Jamaican high ester rum before and after the cask in one sitting.

DOK is an ester mark from Hampden Estate in Trelawny, Jamaica, and it sits at the top of the distillery's scale. This bottling is marked 1500-1600 g/hLAA esters, meaning ester content per hectolitre of pure alcohol. For comparison, most light rum styles sit well below 100. Esters are what gave the Jamaican style its reputation: banana skin, glue, lacquer and overripe pineapple, at a volume that cannot be ignored.

Rum4u is a Danish rum importer run by Lasse, Kim and Brian, who buy single casks and bottle them themselves. This cask carries the number 1.1-22 and produced 79 bottles, which happens to match the strength. The Madeira cask was chosen as a counterweight: it lays dried fruit and a tart sweetness beneath the esters without muting them.

Tasting notes

Nose

Ferocious from the first second. Banana skin, acetone, brined olive and overripe pineapple, with tar and old timber underneath. The miniature is even more direct, sour and green, while the matured version has picked up raisin and fig from the Madeira cask.

Palate

With water in the glass it spreads out: fermented fruit, brine, black pepper and an oily texture that clings to the tongue. Neat, it is mostly the strength doing the talking. The Madeira runs through the middle as a dry, tart stripe of fruit and keeps the esters from reading as pure solvent.

Finish

Very long. Liquorice root, burnt sugar and a saline, almost mineral edge that stays for minutes. The mouth feels warm long afterwards, and the finish shifts character every time you come back to the glass.

How do you even drink a rum at 79%?

With a little in the glass and water beside it. Pour a couple of centilitres, let it sit for five minutes, then add water a few drops at a time until the alcohol loosens its grip on the nose. Nose it with your mouth open rather than diving in, or it simply burns. Many people end up around half water, half rum, and only there do the esters fully unfold.

What does 1500-1600 g/hLAA esters mean?

Can it be used in cocktails?

Yes, but in very small measures. High ester rum is classically used as a seasoning in tiki drinks, where a single teaspoon can lift an entire Mai Tai. Used as the only spirit in a drink, it takes over the whole glass.

How should an opened bottle at this strength be stored?

Upright, dark and cool, and ideally with the closure replaced if it is natural cork. Alcohol at this level attacks natural cork over time, and a bottle lying down risks destroying the stopper from the inside. The contents themselves keep for years, because the strength slows oxidation on its own.
