The Matusalem brand was founded by Spanish immigrant Pablo Nonell, who opened his first distillery in Santiago de Cuba in 1872 and became one of the pioneers of the solera system in the Cuban rum industry. After Nonell, his nephews Enrique and Benjamin Camp took over the business, and later the Álvarez family came to lead it. Following legal disputes in the 1990s, production was firmly established in the Dominican Republic in 2016, where the brand is now sold in more than 70 countries. Gran Reserva 15 Year is one of the house's most mature releases, built on the solera's layers of multiple vintages of rum.

The result is a deep, dark rum, where caramel and dried fruit meet a warm, rounded finish.

S.B.S Jamaica 2016 WPL Bourbon and Marsala Cask is a Jamaican Rum matured in ex-Bourbon and Marsala casks and bottled at 57%. It is made from molasses and was distilled in a pot still in 2016 at Worthy Park Estate, under the WPL mark. After nine years in cask, 1423 World Class Spirits bottled it in February 2025 as part of the S.B.S Single Barrel Selection series.

Marsala is a fortified wine from Sicily, and its casks tend to lend dried fruit and caramel, which is just what turns up on the palate. On top sits the Jamaican funk, that intense, fruity and slightly wild streak the island is known for, while the bourbon cask adds vanilla.

Only 376 bottles were filled, all of them bottled exclusively for the Danish market.

It is a single cask rum made from molasses and distilled in both a column still and a pot still in 2013 at Foursquare. After twelve years in cask, 1423 World Class Spirits bottled it in February 2025 as part of the S.B.S Single Barrel Selection series.

Amontillado is a dry, nutty sherry, which fits the roasted nuts and almonds in the rum. The bourbon cask supplies soft vanilla and brown sugar, while a full oak character holds it all together. Blending column still and pot still gives both lightness and weight.

Ex-Bourbon and Cognac casks together give full dried fruit and creamy vanilla on the palate, and the rum finishes dry, clearly marked by the casks. The sugarcane juice is behind the fresh fruitiness on the nose.

Dràm Mòr, the Scottish independent bottler founded by Kenny and Viktorija Macdonald, sought out and purchased a cask from Grays rum distillery on Mauritius, from which only 444 bottles have been drawn. The nose is sharp and vegetal with a hint of barnyard and a prominent ester note - typical of the pure agricole style, where the rum is distilled from fresh cane juice rather than molasses.

This particular bottle has a damaged neck foil, which does not affect the rum's contents or quality but is the reason it is sold separately. The palate offers a clean agricole profile with tropical fruit, where sharpness and sweetness balance against a lingering dryness.

After blending, the rum spends 60 days in casks that previously held French sugarcane rum, giving it extra depth and complexity. At bottling, only 0.7 ml of caramel per litre is added to keep the colour consistent, but no sugar, setting Extra Noir apart from the house's sweeter Dark Spiced expression.

The cane fields at the eastern end of the Dominican Republic run all the way to the coast, where the air stays salty and damp the year round. Casks work hard in that heat, and they work fast. Esplendido means splendid, and the producer put the word on the label without flinching.

The expert's description

Puntacana Esplendido Dominican Republic Rum 70 cl 38% is a Dominican Rum aged 12 to 20 years in American oak casks, finished in used Burgundy wine casks and bottled at 38%.

The blend brings together young and older distillates married with a 25 year old mother rum. The oldest part supplies the depth, the younger parts the lift, and the result is a very dark rum in the soft Spanish style. The colour is close to mahogany and the texture is thick enough to cling to the side of the glass.

The last six months are spent in used Burgundy wine casks. That is an unusual choice for a Dominican rum, where a finish more often happens in sherry or port wood. The Burgundy casks lay dried red fruit and a light tannin under the sweetness and pull the rum away from straight caramel.

Puntacana Club comes from Oliver & Oliver, a family firm of Cuban origin now based in the Dominican Republic. Maturation happens in a tropical climate, where evaporation runs far higher than in a cool cellar in the north and a cask covers more ground in fewer years. The 12 to 20 years on the label therefore add up to more maturation than the numbers suggest.

Nose

Sweet baking straight away, warm and fresh from the oven, with thick toffee behind it. A trace of dark fruit and vanilla pod rounds the aroma off.

Palate

Brown sugar and fat bourbon vanilla lead, carried by American oak that adds a little dry structure. Dried fruit from the wine casks arrives midway, and the sweetness stays the course without turning sticky.

Finish

Roasted carob, cinnamon and caramelised fruit. Long and warm, and the oak is the last thing standing.
