So I finally got a bit on home turf. 2 new Peated whiskies, which is my very favorite, landed on my table and are now ready to be run through the tasting machine.

Mr. Peat and I have to be honest to say I've never heard of this brand before. The bottlings come from independent bottler Fox Fitzgerald and if anyone like me is not familiar with them, they are behind the Irish single malt Waterford and the rum brand Renegade. They have also had a hand in Bruichladdich since the beginning of time. They are brokers and believe themselves to be visionaries in the brands they deal with.

Can they make Peated whisky, well that is the question here.

Mr Peat comes in 2 versions, a standard 46% bottling and a batch strength of 53.7%. The main thing to notice here is the color of the whisky, or lack thereof, because you could easily mistake them for a glass of water.

Normally, it's Caol Ila that you typically find in independent bottlings from Islay, so let's see if they are also the mainstay of these bottlings. They are certainly exciting

Mister Peat Heavily Peated 46% ABV
There is little information about which casks they have used and what they contain. According to Whiskybase, there are some who think that this smoke scent from Laphroaig comes through clearly and here I, as a Laphroaig enjoyer, have to refute this, it is simply not correct.
Scent:
Organic Peat scent not so strong, citrus, salty
Taste:
Slightly smoky, salty, slight sweetness, full-bodied flavor
Aftertaste:
It's quite fine in the mouth without being overpowering
Rating:
Heavily peated is clearly an own goal, I have tasted several whiskies that offer much stronger, smoky flavors. Big Peat, Port Askaig just to name a few, it tastes a bit like a lazy Big Peat that has been left open too long. If you are an expert in Peat, you will be disappointed, but if you want to introduce someone to what Peat whisky can do, then this one is definitely worth a try.

Mister Peat Batch Strength 53.7 ABV
Their second bottling should give a bit more of a kick up the backside now that it also has the percentages, I'm expecting a completely different experience than the first
Aroma:
Again an organic peat scent, citrus and salt
Taste:
Here you definitely get the campfire flavor for all the money, the 53.7% on the other hand, they are completely understated, you don't sense them at all. Salty, peaty with a slight citrus flavor at the end.
Aftertaste:
Again, where does this Heavily Peat go. Have they forgotten it in the bottle or has it just disappeared out of thin air.

Assessment:
Pleasant peat flavor without scaring some away hard to choose one over the other
Conclusion
Who Mr. Peat is aimed at is pretty clear. The newcomer to smoked whisky is definitely the one who will dive nose and palate into these bottles. As a fan of peat, I wouldn't grab these bottles at all, and yet here you can enjoy a peated whisky without scaring away the person next to you or your immediate surroundings.
Mr Peat will find some good flavors in time, but I would still recommend that you as a smoky whisky lover still look towards Ardbeg, Big Peat and all the others with a more penetrating taste and scent.
