Tequila

Here you can find different versions of the delicious beverage from Mexico. Mezcal is the general category to which Tequila belongs - just like the Whiskey category, which also has sub-categories such as Bourbon, Rye etc.

Mezcal is made from agave, but there are many different species - up to 28 to 30 different. Below is the Blue Agave (Agave Tequiliana Weber), which is the type to be used for the production of tequila according to the restrictions, the so-called Denomination de Origin.
  • Blanco is a clear / white tequila that is not dish-aged and therefore has strong agave aroma and freshness.
  • Reposado is stored on wooden casks for at least 2 months and up to 12 months. The individual manufacturer therefore chooses himself within the range. Reposado is the preferred type of tequila in Mexico
  • Anejo means old and an anejo is at least stored on wooden casks for 12 months and up to 36 months. These tequilas are softer and rounder, but with less agave aroma.
  • Extra Anejo is, as its name suggests, an anejo, which is extra dish stored, which means that the tequila has been at minimum wooden barrels for 36 months. These tequilas are only available in limited quantities

  • Column-shaped bottle of Corralejo Añejo Tequila with dark amber liquid and colourful label
    Item no.: 22227865479-8392

Twelve months in a carefully chosen blend of American and French oak, charred on the inside for a touch of smoke. Corralejo Añejo still carries the name of the hacienda where Mexico's independence was once sparked.

    Expert Description

Corralejo Añejo Tequila is a Mexican Añejo Tequila made from 100% agave and bottled at 38%.

Behind the bottle stands Hacienda Corralejo in Guanajuato, an estate with roots dating back to 1755 and known as the birthplace of Don Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, the man who sparked the Mexican War of Independence. Hacienda Corralejo is one of only a handful of distilleries outside Jalisco with official rights to produce tequila, and the whole process still takes place on the estate, from agave field to hand-blown bottle.

The Añejo expression is double distilled using the centuries-old Charentais method and aged at least twelve months in a carefully chosen blend of American and French oak barrels, charred on the inside to add a touch of smoke.

Did you know that Hacienda Corralejo is both one of Mexico's oldest and one of its newest tequila distilleries? The estate has made tequila since 1755, but the Corralejo brand as we know it today was relaunched in 1996, after businessman Don Leonardo Rodríguez Moreno bought the hacienda in 1994.

    Item no.: 22227865479-8390

Blanco is where it all begins for Corralejo — before the barrels, before the ageing, just the pure must from Guanajuato's agave fields, poured straight into the glass.

    Expert Description

Corralejo Tequila Blanco is a Mexican Blanco Tequila made from 100% agave and bottled at 38%.

The tequila comes from Hacienda Corralejo in Pénjamo, Guanajuato, where distilling dates back to the 1770s, while the Corralejo brand itself was established in 1996. Blanco is the very soul of Corralejo's tequilas, since this expression forms the foundation for all its other releases. It's double distilled and bottled shortly after distillation, with no cask ageing, preserving the full, clean agave character.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Raw agave with intense notes of citrus and herbs.

    Palate

A fine balance between raw and distilled agave, with clear citrus, herbs and a touch of black pepper.

Some tequilas are made to be drunk quickly. Don Julio 1942 is made to be remembered. Its name honours the year a seventeen-year-old named Julio González took his first step toward changing what tequila could be — and the result is a bottle that still sets the standard for how smooth and refined an agave spirit can taste.

    Expert Description

Don Julio 1942 is a Mexican Anejo Tequila made from 100% Blue Weber agave and aged in American oak barrels for at least 24 months at 38% ABV.

It is produced in small batches and has established itself as one of the most respected names among tequila connoisseurs worldwide. High above Atotonilco el Alto, rows of blue Weber agave grow slowly in volcanic soil. From these fields comes Don Julio Anejo — a tequila built not for fire, but for caramel, honey and a quiet touch of citrus. It is made to be sipped, not shot.

    Expert Description

Don Julio Anejo is a Mexican Anejo Tequila made from 100% Blue Weber agave and aged in American oak barrels for at least 18 months at 38% ABV.

The tequila carries the name of Don Julio González, who at just 17 years old in 1942 borrowed money to take over a distillery in Atotonilco el Alto, Jalisco. He insisted on quality over volume and planted his own agave fields long before that was standard practice — an approach still shaping every Don Julio tequila today. The Anejo expression rests in American oak barrels previously used for bourbon, giving it a deep, rounded character and making it one of the world’s best-selling 100% agave Anejo tequilas.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

A fresh blend of lime, grapefruit and mandarin citrus aromas, lifted by a rich touch of caramel.

    Palate

Full-bodied and complex, with cooked agave, wild honey and oak-infused butterscotch.

    Finish

At fifteen, Don Julio González carried the weight of his whole family on his shoulders and rode across Jalisco on horseback to sell tequila straight from wooden barrels. That same stubborn drive to do things properly still lives in every bottle of Don Julio Blanco.

    Expert Description

Don Julio Blanco is a Mexican Blanco Tequila made from 100% Blue Weber agave, double distilled in pot stills and bottled at 38%.

Behind the name is Don Julio González, who opened his first distillery, La Primavera, in the town of Atotonilco el Alto in Jalisco back in 1947. In 1985, to mark his own 60th birthday, he launched a 100% agave tequila under his own name — the start of what's now one of Mexico's most respected tequila houses. The Blanco expression is the foundation the rest of the range is built on: pure agave, unaged, distilled from nothing but water, yeast and agave.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Crisp and clean, with fresh agave alongside lemon, lime and grapefruit.

    Palate

Light and sweet, carried by the agave's natural sweetness and a hint of citrus.

Eight months in the barrel doesn't sound like much, but in a category where two months is enough to call itself Reposado, it's four times what the law demands. That patience is the whole difference between an ordinary Reposado and Don Julio Reposado.

    Expert Description

Don Julio Reposado is a Mexican Reposado Tequila made from 100% agave, rested for at least eight months in American White Oak casks and bottled at 38%.

The tequila carries the name of Don Julio González, who founded his first distillery in Atotonilco el Alto, Jalisco, in 1947 and launched a 100% agave tequila under his own name in 1985. The Reposado expression rests in casks that previously held bourbon for at least eight months — four times longer than Mexican law requires for the category. That extra time gives it a golden colour and a far softer, more complex character than a Blanco Tequila.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

An inviting aroma of mellow lemon citrus notes and spice, with touches of ripe stone fruit.

    Palate

Incredibly soft and elegant, with hints of dark chocolate, vanilla and light cinnamon.

    Finish

    Item no.: 22227865479-8390-235

Picture a tequila that has spent four months in American oak yet still pours crystal clear. Charcoal filtration strips away the colour the wood left behind, while pineapple, mango and pear stay right where they belong - a small optical puzzle from the heart of Jalisco.

    Expert Description

El Tequileño Cristalino Reposado Tequila is a Mexican Cristalino Reposado Tequila made from 100% agave and bottled at 35%.

Behind the bottle stands El Tequileño, founded in 1959 by Don Jorge Salles Cuervo in the town of Tequila itself. The house distils exclusively at its own distillery, La Guarreña, one of only around ten distilleries in Mexico that produce tequila solely for their own brand. Today third-generation master distiller Tony Salles leads production, carrying on the craft his grandfather started.

The Cristalino expression starts life as the house Reposado, matured four months in American oak, before passing through a careful charcoal filtration. The process removes the colour the oak left behind, but not the roundness and depth the ageing has added - the result looks like a Blanco, yet tastes like something more.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Pineapple, mango and ripe pear, carried by a touch of delicate vanilla.

    Palate

Tropical fruit with clear mango, rounded off by a light, sweet vanilla note.

    Finish

A Blanco that isn't simply bottled straight off the still. El Tequileño lets Platinum rest 14 days in American oak before bottling - too short to add colour, but enough to smooth its sharpest edges.

    Expert Description

El Tequileño Platinum Blanco Tequila is a Mexican Blanco Tequila made from 100% agave and bottled at 40%.

The house of El Tequileño was founded in 1959 by Don Jorge Salles Cuervo in the town of Tequila, where the family still distils at its own facility, La Guarreña. The agave comes from the house's own fields, where blue Weber agave is grown and harvested before being cooked and distilled a stone's throw from the town centre.

Platinum is the purest expression in the range. The 14 days in oak barrels add neither colour nor pronounced wood character, but are enough to give the tequila a gentler, more rounded character than a straight-bottled Blanco - still crystal clear, with an extra layer underneath.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Baked agave, herbal notes and delicate touches of anise and black pepper.

    Palate

    Expert Description

Fortaleza Blanco Tequila is a Mexican Blanco Tequila made from 100% agave, bottled at 40%.

Fortaleza is the work of Guillermo Erickson Sauza, a descendant of Don Cenobio Sauza, who founded Sauza Tequila in 1873. In 2005, Guillermo revived his family's old distillery in the town of Tequila, reintroducing traditional methods: the agave is cooked in brick ovens, crushed with a two-ton stone tahona wheel, and fermented naturally in wooden vats before double distillation in copper pot stills, with no additives. The Blanco is bottled straight after distillation, preserving its raw agave character without any barrel influence.

It comes from Hacien, a distillery founded by Seb Francis and Jordan Myers and based just outside the town of Tequila. The base is 100% Blue Weber Agave, its hearts slow-steamed in traditional stone ovens for 36-54 hours before being pressed and distilled – with no added glucose or fructose. For this expression, the finished Blanco Tequila is infused with natural pineapple flavouring and agave syrup, so the agave's own character still comes through.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Citrus, fresh pineapple, straw and a touch of mint.

    Palate

Ripe pineapple and a crunchy citrus sorbet meet earthy agave and a light peppery bite.

At the old organic estate Oremandsgaard north of Copenhagen, Mexican agave meets Danish craftsmanship. The result is a bottle that smells and tastes of the classic tequila style, without a single drop of alcohol.

    Expert Description

Ish Tequila Mexican Agave Spirit Alcohol-Free is an Alcohol-Free Agave-Inspired Spirit, bottled at 0%.

The bottle comes from the Danish drinks house ISH Spirits, which crafts its alcohol-free range at Oremandsgaard – one of Denmark's oldest organic estates – using clean, pesticide-free water as its base. This expression is built around the classic Reposado tequila style: organic Mexican agave is combined with American oak, bay leaf, barley and a touch of brown sugar, together delivering the rounded, lightly oaked character you'd expect from an aged tequila. ISH has also developed a unique distillate from chilli seed shells, which provides a spiced kick in place of alcohol's warmth.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Earthy agave and oak, with a hint of bay leaf.

    Palate

Round and lightly sweet, carried by agave and oak, with a spiced kick from chilli.

  • Bottle of José Cuervo Especial Gold Tequila with golden hue and red label
    Item no.: 22227865479-10154

Behind almost every classic margarita sits a bottle of Especial Gold. The golden colour catches the bar light long before the first glass is poured, agave and vanilla rising from the glass — a tequila that has followed cocktail culture from the beach bars of Tijuana to shakers the world over.

    Expert Description

José Cuervo Especial Gold is a Mexican Gold Tequila (Mixto), bottled at 38% ABV. It is produced at the La Rojeña distillery in the town of Tequila, Jalisco — home to the José Cuervo family since 1795 and one of the oldest continuously operating tequila distilleries in Mexico.

Especial Gold is a mixto tequila, where at least 51% of the sugar source comes from blue agave, with the rest from other sugars. The golden colour comes from blending an aged Reposado portion — rested at least two months in oak barrels — with younger tequila and a touch of caramel colouring. The result is a soft, approachable tequila that has served as many drinkers' introduction to the category for decades.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

The nose is light and sweet, with notes of agave, vanilla and a hint of toasted oak, framed by orange peel and a sugary sweetness.

    Palate

The palate is sweet with cooked agave and caramel, spiced with a light touch of pepper, while vanilla keeps it soft throughout.

    Finish

The finish is short and warm, with a last note of vanilla and a touch of grapefruit.

Especial Gold is, according to several industry reports, the world's best-selling tequila — a position it owes in part to José Cuervo's role in taking the Margarita from the bars of Tijuana to the rest of the world, back when family member Juan Beckmann Gallardo promoted the brand across the United States in the 1940s.

In the heart of Jalisco, where rows of blue agave stretch toward the sun as far as the eye can see, sits La Rojeña, the oldest continuously operating distillery in Latin America. From here, Jose Cuervo Especial Reposado has been shipped out into the world since 1795, and it still shows up at pretty much every good party.

    Expert Description

Jose Cuervo Especial Reposado Mexican Tequila is a Reposado Tequila made from blue agave and bottled at 38%.

This is the Cuervo family's best-known expression and the world's best-selling tequila. It is a blend of agave and cane sugar spirit, a so-called mixto tequila, which sets it apart from 100% agave expressions such as Cuervo's own Tradicional range. What it lacks in purity, it makes up for in versatility: Especial Reposado was built for exactly what most people use it for, making a Margarita or a Paloma taste better. After distillation, the tequila rests briefly in oak barrels, which gives it its golden colour and a rounder, slightly sweet character.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Cooked agave, creamy caramel and a touch of vanilla, spiced with light nuttiness and a whisper of dried herbs.

    Palate

Medium-bodied and balanced between the sweetness of the agave and spicy oak notes, with baked agave, mixed spice and a light honeyed sweetness.

    Finish

Soft and warm, with a long, spicy finish that leaves a last trace of sweetness behind.

    Expert Description

José Cuervo Platino is a Mexican Blanco Tequila (100% Agave), bottled at 40% ABV. It is distilled at La Rojeña in the town of Tequila, Jalisco, and belongs to José Cuervo's "Reserva de la Familia" line — a range originally made solely for the family's and friends' own table.

Platino is made exclusively from 100% organically grown Blue Weber Agave, yeast and water, through a production method called "Esencia de Agave" — a technique José Cuervo has refined over two centuries. The method is designed to preserve the agave's original aroma and character, without the tequila ever touching a barrel.

    Tasting Notes

    Expert Description

Jose Cuervo Reserva de La Familia is a Mexican Extra Añejo Tequila made from 100% agave, aged in French and American oak and bottled at 38%.

Like the rest of the Cuervo family's range, the bottle comes from the La Rojeña distillery in Jalisco, where tequila has been made since 1795. Reserva de La Familia was created in 1995 to mark the 200th anniversary of the Cuervo family's tequila venture, and it's considered the world's first commercial Extra Añejo Tequila. It's aged for an average of three years in French and American oak, and the final blend is complemented with tequila from reserves that have rested for over 30 years in the distillery's private cellars. Expert Description

José Cuervo Especial Silver is a Mexican Silver Tequila (Mixto), bottled at 38% ABV. It comes from the same distillery as Especial Gold, La Rojeña in the town of Tequila, Jalisco, where the José Cuervo family has produced tequila since 1795.

The Silver expression is double distilled and bottled straight after distillation, without any time in barrel. As a mixto tequila, at least 51% of its sugar source comes from blue agave, the rest from other sugars, giving it a light, direct profile built to mix well with citrus, salt and ice.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

The nose is clean and direct, with cooked agave, citrus peel and a hint of black pepper.

Six months in oak isn't long by tequila standards, but it's enough to give Tradicional Gold Reposado its soft, golden character — without ever letting the agave fade into the background.

    Expert Description

Jose Cuervo Tradicional Gold Reposado is a Mexican Reposado Tequila made from 100% agave, rested in oak barrels and bottled at 38%.

Like Tradicional Silver, the bottle comes from La Rojeña in Jalisco, where the Cuervo family has distilled since 1795. Many people know Cuervo through the yellow Especial — a mixto tequila with only 51% agave — but Tradicional Gold Reposado is distilled solely from blue agave. After distillation it rests for six months in oak barrels, which gives it a light golden colour and a rounder, more complex flavour than a Blanco Tequila.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Agave, oak, honey and citrus, spiced with an earthy touch of dried herbs.

    Palate

Medium-bodied with a slightly oily richness, where roasted agave, pineapple and oak meet black and white pepper along with a hint of vanilla.

The sun beats down on the blue agave fields of Jalisco, and somewhere between the shredding, the roasting and the distillation hides a clarity the rest of the tequila world still measures itself against. No barrel, no detours — just agave, straight into the glass.

    Expert Description

Jose Cuervo Tradicional Silver is a Mexican Blanco Tequila made from 100% agave and bottled at 38%.

The bottle comes from La Rojeña, the oldest continuously operating distillery in Latin America, where the Cuervo family has distilled tequila since 1795. Tradicional isn't the same as the well-known yellow Especial — where Especial is a mixto tequila with only 51% agave and the rest cane sugar, Tradicional Silver is distilled solely from blue agave, with no added sugar sources. That gives it a cleaner, more direct agave character that's still easy to drink and a natural fit for a Margarita.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Herbaceous and green, with fresh citrus, a touch of honey and a hint of white pepper.

    Palate

A fine balance between sweetness and spice on the palate, with grapefruit, lime and a light mineral undercurrent.

Crystal clear and unadorned — La Malinche Blanco has nothing to hide behind. The aroma of cooked agave meets mint and citrus, and every sip reminds you that this tequila has been through only two distillations and nothing else. Clean and direct, from bottle to glass.

    Expert Description

La Malinche Blanco is a Mexican Blanco Tequila from Jalisco, made from 100% blue agave and bottled at 38%. The bottle comes from Tequilas del Señor, founded in 1943 by Don Cesar García in the town of Tequila, and is distilled no more than twice from the cooked, pressed agave juice — a simpler process than the Gold expression, giving the tequila a rawer, more direct agave character.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Intense notes of cooked agave, spiced with mint and citrus.

    Palate

Silky on the palate, with clear herbal tones.

    Finish

Slightly bitter and dry, rounding off the fresh profile nicely.

Golden, with glints of amber and silver in the glass — that is how La Malinche Gold introduces itself before you have even lifted the bottle. The aroma of cooked agave meets caramel and citrus, with Jalisco's warm evenings waiting somewhere in the background. A tequila built to be shared, whether at the table or in a cocktail glass.

    Expert Description

La Malinche Gold is a Mexican Gold Tequila from Jalisco, made from 100% blue agave and bottled at 38%. The bottle comes from Tequilas del Señor, a distillery founded in 1943 by Don Cesar García in the town of Tequila, where the craft has passed down through generations. The agave plants — Agave Tequilana Weber Azul — are harvested no earlier than eight years of growth, after which the piñas are cooked, pressed and fermented before the finished distillate is bottled under the La Malinche brand, distributed by the Spanish Grupo Luis Caballero.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Raw and cooked agave meet caramel and citrus, with a layer of dried herbs waiting in the background.

    Palate

Herbal and intense from the first sip, with agave still carrying the weight.

    Finish

Rounds off sweet and soft, without losing its herbal edge.

Red earth, dry hills and agave in straight rows as far as the eye can see. Jalisco has made tequila for generations, and that's where LALA gets theirs.
But the story actually begins in a bar in Brooklyn, where two Dutch friends tasted something they couldn't buy back home in Amsterdam.

    Expert Description

LALA Blanco Tequila is a Blanco Tequila from Jalisco in Mexico, made from 100% Blue Weber Agave, unaged and bottled at 38%.

Ambre and Iris came home from the US with the memories, but not the bottles. The solution was to make Amsterdam's first tequila brand themselves, and LALA became the city's first female-owned brand at the same time. The name comes from the feminine article "la" found in a number of languages, and with two women behind the brand it became LALA. The bottles are filled and labelled by hand, one at a time, on a production line staffed entirely by women.

The distillate itself comes from an award-winning distillery in the heart of the tequila region in Jalisco, where production runs in small batches. The agave is baked for over nine hours until the piña is soft enough to release the sugar when crushed. The juice ferments with yeast for around 72 hours and is then distilled twice. No barrel ageing, no detour - the Blanco expression goes straight to bottle, which is why the agave stands out so clearly.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Ripe agave right away, with something reminiscent of olive oil behind it. Green apple, a touch of anise and the smell of freshly cut grass.

    Palate

Semi-sweet on the palate with more body than you'd expect at 38%. The agave stays in the middle while citrus and lime spread out to the sides. A green pepper note appears at the end.

    Finish

Clean and refreshing. The herbal notes linger, and there's a light spiced warmth that stays for a while.

    Did You Know?

It takes around seven kilos of agave hearts to make a single litre of LALA Tequila. The jimadores cut away the leaves by hand, so only the piña moves on to the oven.

The highlands around Jalisco lie red and dry under the sun. The agaves stand in long rows and wait seven to eight years before the jimador arrives with his coa and cuts the leaves away. What's left is the piña — the heart that becomes tequila.

    Expert Description

LALA Reposado Tequila is a Reposado Tequila made from 100% blue agave from Jalisco in Mexico, matured four months in new oak barrels and bottled at 40%.

Behind the bottle are two Dutch friends, Ambre and Iris. They fell for tequila at a bar in Brooklyn, came home to Amsterdam and discovered that kind of tequila didn't really exist there. So they made it themselves. LALA became Amsterdam's first tequila brand, and the name comes from the feminine article "la" — twice, for two women. Production takes place in small batches at an award-winning distillery in Jalisco.

The agave is baked for over nine hours until the piña is soft and the sugar easy to press free. The juice ferments naturally for around 72 hours and is then distilled twice. The distillate spends four months in new oak barrels, and that's where the colour and the round tone come from: fresh wood quickly releases vanilla, caramel and a light spiced oakiness, without overpowering the agave.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Cooked agave first, sweet and slightly earthy. Baked apple and vanilla on top, with a touch of anise and freshly cut grass in the background.

    Palate

Soft and semi-sweet on the palate. Caramel and vanilla from the new wood, the agave still clear in the middle of it all, and a hint of citrus toward the end.

    Finish

Medium-length and warm. Herbs and lightly smoked oak linger without biting.
