  • Vintage bottle of German green herbal liqueur from the 1960s
    Item no.: 22227865479-1106-197239

A Munich legend from when Escorial rivalled absinthe for the title of the city's cult drink - this bottle of green Escorial is a rare window into 1960s Germany.

    Ekspertens beskrivelse

Escorial Riemerschmid Old Version is a German herbal liqueur from the distillery Riemerschmid, bottled at 56% ABV - this bottle is a vintage edition from the 1960s.

Escorial was developed in 1835 by Robert Riemerschmid and first brought to market in 1910 by the Anton Riemerschmid group in Munich. Riemerschmid moved from Munich to Erding in 1984 and was acquired by the Underberg group in 1996. This bottle is a single example from the early green era and is sold as a rare collector's item.

    Smag

The liqueur offers powerful aromas of sweet woodruff, aniseed, peppercorn, citrus and fresh green herbs, blended according to a secret recipe of harmoniously balanced herb and spice distillates. The taste is intense and complex, comparable in sensory character to green Chartreuse.

    Expert's Description

Fiorente Elderflower Liqueur is an Italian Herbal liqueur based on elderflower, bottled at 20% ABV.

The liqueur is made by the Fratelli Francoli distillery, which has been distilling some of Italy's finest spirits since 1875. The distillery is located in Piedmont, a region also famous for the wines Barolo, Barbaresco and Barbera. Fiorente was shaped in close collaboration with bartenders and deliberately contains less sugar than many other elderflower liqueurs on the market, making it well suited for adding to wine that already carries a hint of sweetness.

    Taste

Fiorente has vivid colours and a fragrant, floral character, with a delicious taste and the perfect weight for any cocktail. The sweetness is more restrained than in many other elderflower liqueurs, giving a cleaner, more floral flavour experience rather than an overwhelming sugary sweetness.

The product was originally launched in the 1980s by Seagram as one of several flavoured schnapps, with the manufacturer's own origin story crediting a Canadian bartender trying to warm up after an Arctic cold snap. In 2007 the product was rebranded to the Fireball Cinnamon Whisky most people know today, and a combination of social media, bartender-focused marketing and word of mouth sent sales from $1.9 million in 2011 to $61 million in 2013, briefly overtaking both Jameson and Patrón.

  • Frangelico Hazelnut Liqueur Italy 70 cl 20%
    Item no.: 22227879-599

Piedmont, late summer. The hazel rows across the Langhe hills hang heavy, baskets fill with Tonda Gentile, and the whole district smells of nuts going into the roaster. Frangelico starts here — in a grove, not a laboratory.

    Expert description

Frangelico Hazelnut Liqueur is an Italian Hazelnut Liqueur made from toasted Tonda Gentile hazelnuts grown in Piedmont and bottled at 20%.

The brand launched in 1978, created by the Barbero family at their company Barbero 1891 S.p.A. in the town of Canale in Piedmont. Ownership has moved around since — first C&C Group, then William Grant & Sons, and from 2010 Gruppo Campari, which still produces the liqueur in Piedmont.

Tonda Gentile is not a random nut. It runs bigger, rounder and more uniform than most, and the skin sheds cleanly during toasting. That is the whole point: leave the skin on and it drags bitterness into the distillate. The nuts are toasted and distilled with neutral alcohol, and the distillate is then infused with cacao beans, coffee, vanilla, berries, rhubarb root and sweet orange flower. Sugar and water finish the blend.

The colour is bright golden brown, and caramel colouring is added. Most people know the bottle before they know the liquid: it is shaped like a Franciscan friar in his habit, with a rope cord knotted around the neck. The name points to the hermit monk Fra Angelico, whom legend credits with the original recipe.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Toasted hazelnut straight away, warm and unmistakable. Cocoa, vanilla pod and a thread of orange peel sit behind it.

    Palate

Soft and full. Nougat and roasted nuts first, then dark chocolate and a rounded note of coffee. Sweet, but it never turns sticky.

    Finish

Medium. The nut lingers, the vanilla fades slowly, and the cocoa leaves a touch of dryness at the very end.

Its success led him to convert his pharmacy into a distillery, and today - five generations later - the house is still family-run, producing more than 60 fruit and herbal liqueurs for bartenders and cocktail enthusiasts around the world. The liqueur is part of the Giffard Premium Liqueurs range, ten top-quality liqueurs created to be the leading flavour in a cocktail, where the origin of each main ingredient is carefully selected and guaranteed. The coffee comes from Fairtrade-certified farmers in the mountains of the Lenca region of Honduras, with varieties such as Catuai, Caturra, Typica and Bourbon. The beans are roasted in France by the artisan roaster Café Bonnac, then cold-macerated in neutral beet spirit to preserve the aromatic complexity.

    Taste

The taste is warm and generous with roasted coffee, notes of cocoa, caramel and vanilla, carried by a well-balanced sweetness and a clean, lingering coffee bitterness on the finish.
