In North Karelia, a region in eastern Finland known for moonshining in the 1930s, a small family business now runs a distillery named after Kalevala, the Finnish national epic.

Kalevala Organic Small Batch Gin is a Finnish organic gin distilled by Kalevala Distillery and bottled at 46.3%.

The distillery is a small family business where every part of production is handled in-house in small batches, and Kalevala is the only certified organic spirit produced in Finland.

Even the water used in distillation comes from the distillery's own well, underlining the handcrafted, down-to-earth approach.

Wheat brandy rests for 24 hours with juniper, after which raspberry leaves, mint, rosebuds, rosemary and other botanicals are placed in the upper part of the still, so the alcohol vapours are enriched with the aromas of Finnish nature.

The gin is distilled in small batches on a beautiful copper pot still in the Marylebone district of London, with a recipe drawing on a heritage stretching back eight generations.

13 botanicals go into the recipe, including camomile, lime flower, lemon balm and grapefruit alongside the traditional juniper.

The gin has won numerous awards, including Double Gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition and a Gold Outstanding medal at the International Wine & Spirits Awards.

The idea reportedly began in a bar in Karlsruhe, where graphic designer Heiko Hoos decided to bring his vision of the perfect gin to life, one small batch at a time.

Heiko London Dry Gin is a German London Dry Gin handmade by Heiko Hoos in Karlsruhe and bottled at 44.4%.

The gin is distilled in microbatches of around 120 bottles at a time, with each bottle hand-filled and numbered, making every bottle a unique piece.

Botanicals include juniper, marjoram, lemon balm, sweet fennel, chamomile and pine buds, together creating a well-balanced flavour distilled according to classic London Dry principles.

The gin won silver at the International Spirits Competition in 2015 and received the Best Innovation award at Cocktail Spirits in Paris for one of the best new releases of 2014-15.

The gin is built on the same ten botanicals and the same distillation process as the original Martin Miller's, with spices and botanicals distilled separately from the citrus peels and then blended with a cucumber distillate.

The difference lies in the strength: Westbourne Strength is brought down with Icelandic spring water to 45.2% instead of the original's 40%, giving a more intense, concentrated experience.

The name Westbourne comes from Westbourne Grove in London, where Martin Miller lived while he and his friends developed the original recipe.

The gin launched in 1999, created by Martin Miller together with friends David Bromige and Andreas Versteegh, who helped pioneer a new era for premium gin.

Ten botanicals go into the recipe, with spices and earthy botanicals distilled separately from the citrus peels, and the two distillates are then blended together with an added cucumber distillate.

Finally, the gin is brought down in strength with extra-pure Icelandic spring water, drawn from a fjord on Iceland's west coast and blended in the village of Borgarnes, giving the gin its signature purity.

The distillery was founded by Henrik Elsner in 2009 in Fredensborg and is defined by its philosophy of using very few raw materials, in sharp contrast to most mass-produced gins.

ELG No 2 is built on the same three botanicals as ELG No 1, juniper, coriander seed and Danish carrots, where the whole carrot, including the green tops, goes into the distillation.

What makes No 2 an Old Tom is an additional juniper extract soaked in alcohol for four weeks, added afterwards, giving the gin a natural sweetness without using sugar, honey or liquorice root.
