Gin & Tonic

Here at Whisky.dk we absolutely love gin and tonic. We have therefore put together a large selection of the best gin brands and tonic water as well as an exclusive selection of Danish gin. We want to share our great passion and love for gin and tonic, so sit back and enjoy our gin and tonic universe.

Gin is originally from the Netherlands and is a contraction of the French word for juniper. They started mixing alcohol with juniper in the 17th century for kidney pain. This spread to England, and the English soldiers got a taste for it. The gin was later sold at the pharmacy and used against ailments. Today, gin is known for use in drinks such as gin and tonic, dry Martini and Tom Collins.

  • Bottle of Caorunn Small Batch Scottish Gin from Balmenach
    Item no.: 2222786539-1008

Deep inside Balmenach whisky distillery in Speyside sits a copper chamber found nowhere else in the world. Here, among whisky casks and malt bins, Caorunn is born - named after the Gaelic word for rowan.

    Expert's description

Caorunn Small Batch Scottish Gin is a Scottish Premium Gin distilled at Balmenach Distillery in Speyside and bottled at 41.8%.

Caorunn has been handcrafted in small batches at Balmenach since 2009 and is distilled in the world's only working copper Berry Chamber, housed inside the whisky distillery itself.

Eleven botanicals, including juniper, coriander, cassia bark, angelica root, lemon and orange peel, are loaded into the chamber's four trays alongside five Scottish 'Celtic' botanicals: rowan berry, heather, dandelion, bog myrtle and Coul Blush apple. Vapour from the spirit passes through the trays over several days, picking up the aromas.

Each batch totals just 1,000 litres, giving every bottle a tight, handcrafted character.

  • Bottle of Citadelle Premium French Gin from the Cognac region
    Item no.: 2222786539-1013

In the Cognac region, the stills sit idle for half the year, since the law states cognac can only be distilled between November and March. Alexandre Gabriel saw an opportunity and filled the empty months with something else entirely: gin.

    Expert's description

Citadelle Gin is a French Premium Gin distilled by Maison Ferrand in the Cognac region and bottled at 44%.

The gin launched in 1996 and takes its name from the royal distillery once housed in a citadel in Dunkirk, where the French distillers Carpeau and Stival were already making gin from juniper as early as 1771.

Citadelle is distilled in a traditional Charentaise still, the same kind used for cognac, over a naked flame. The base is a neutral wheat spirit, joined by 19 botanicals including orris root, almond, cardamom, cassia bark, grains of paradise and cubeb pepper.

The patented method is called progressive maceration, where each botanical joins the distillation at its own moment, depending on how strong and volatile its aroma is.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

The nose is complex and spiced with juniper, citrus and a warm note of cardamom and cinnamon.

    Palate

The palate is round and full-bodied with almond-like sweetness, spiced depth from grains of paradise and a delicate floral undertone from orris root.

    Finish

The finish is long and spiced, with a last trace of anise and pepper.

  • Bottle of Monkey 47 Schwarzwald Dry Gin from Germany
    Item no.: 2222786539-1019

The story starts with a monkey named Max, a retired RAF officer and a guesthouse deep in the Black Forest. Decades later, when renovation workers found a hand-labelled bottle hidden in the building, a gin legend was rediscovered.

    Expert's description

Monkey 47 Schwarzwald Dry Gin is a German Gin distilled from 47 botanicals in the Black Forest and bottled at 47%.

After World War II, RAF officer Montgomery Collins settled in the Black Forest, where he ran the guesthouse "The Wild Monkey," named after Max, a monkey he had sponsored at Berlin Zoo. There he distilled his own Schwarzwald Dry Gin until the guesthouse closed in the 1970s.

Decades later, a hand-labelled bottle and a note with Collins's botanical notes were found hidden in the building. This inspired Alex Stein and Christoph Keller to recreate the recipe as Monkey 47.

    Tasting notes

  • Bottle of Saffron Gin from Gabriel Boudier, France
    Item no.: 2222786539-1002

In the archives of the old French house Gabriel Boudier lay a recipe dating back to when France held trading posts in India. Saffron Gin is the rediscovered tribute to the exotic spices that were once the height of fashion.

    Expert's description

Saffron Gin is a French London Dry Gin distilled by Gabriel Boudier in Dijon and bottled at 40%.

The recipe was rediscovered in Maison Boudier's archives in 2008, when the company's British importer asked for a French London Dry Gin. The story dates back to the 19th century, when France held colonies such as Pondicherry, Chandernagore and Madras, famed for their exotic botanicals.

The gin is distilled from seven classic botanicals - juniper, coriander, lemon peel, orange peel, angelica root, iris and fennel - before an infusion of real saffron threads from Crocus sativus is added.

The saffron gives the gin its characteristic golden hue and an earthy, lightly sweet spice that sets it apart from most other London Dry Gins.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

The nose offers juniper and citrus, spiced with an earthy, lightly honeyed tone from the saffron.

    Expert's description

Tarquin's Cornish Dry Gin is an English Dry Gin distilled in Cornwall and bottled at 42%.
