Sometimes the best snaps isn't the one everyone already knows, but the one that makes the lunch table pause for a moment. Fary Lochan Valnødsnaps is exactly that kind of bottle, round and thoughtful, far from the sweet, floral classics.

    The Expert's Description

Fary Lochan Valnødsnaps is a Danish snaps bottled at 36% ABV from the Fary Lochan distillery in Farre near Give.

Fary Lochan builds its snaps range around a single, clear ingredient theme per bottle, the same philosophy behind the distillery's well-known single malt whisky, where every choice of raw material and method should be clearly felt in the glass. The distillery, based in the small village of Farre, is today a family-owned company with around 400 shareholders behind it.

In Valnødsnaps, it's fresh walnuts that set the course. They give a round, clean nutty flavour, which the distillery itself highlights as a snaps that's welcome to stand out on the lunch table once the more traditional akvavits have already made the rounds.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Round nutty aroma of fresh walnuts with a light trace of wood.

    Palate

Clean, distinctive walnut flavour with a soft, round body and a hint of bitterness in the background.

    Finish

Medium in length, nutty and lightly dry, with the walnut's bitterness the last thing to fade.

Named after a Trondheim trader who set an entire aquavit tradition adrift over 200 years ago. Milder than its siblings, but carrying the same story in its blood.

    The Expert's Description

Fru Catharina Lysholm Norsk Akvavit is a Norwegian aquavit at 38% ABV, part of the Lysholm family.

The aquavit is named after Catharina Lysholm, an enterprising businesswoman who, together with her brother Heinrich, ran a trading house in Trondheim in the early 1800s. On her initiative, the ship Trondhjems Prøve sailed to the East Indies in 1805-07, a voyage that was later found to have matured the aquavit on board. That discovery laid the foundation for the whole Linie tradition the rest of the Lysholm family builds on. Fru Catharina is the mildest of the aquavits, with a lower strength and a softer, rounder character.

Medium-intensity aromas of caraway, citrus and vanilla.

    Palate

Lightly sweet and medium-bodied with soft alcohol and a balanced character.

    Item no.: 22227865378-8265

Sea buckthorn bushes glow orange along the Danish coast in autumn, tart and tough enough to withstand both wind and salt water. That same stubborn freshness is bottled in this akvavit.

    The Expert's Description

Fur Gylden is a Danish akvavit at 35% ABV, spiced with sea buckthorn and produced by Fur Bryghus on the island of Fur in the Limfjord.

The akvavit is part of Fur Bryghus' exclusive snaps series, brewed together with the micro-distillery Braunstein in Køge. Sea buckthorn gives the golden drops their characteristic colour and a tart, sweet berry character that sets it apart from a more classic caraway or dill akvavit.

Fur Bryghus uses water drawn from the island itself, filtered through layers of moler, the pale, mineral-rich clay stone Fur is known for far beyond the Limfjord.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Tart, fruity aroma of sea buckthorn berries, with a light trace of honey and yellow apples.

    Palate

Round and golden in style, where the sea buckthorn's acidity balances a soft sweetness, while the alcohol gives an even, warming undertone.

    Finish

Medium length with a tart, berry-driven finish that slowly gives way to a light spiced warmth.

The wind bites gently over the Limfjord, and in the old mill house on Fur the air smells of cinnamon and orange peel. It is the kind of evening that calls for a small glass of Christmas snaps.

    The Expert's Description

Fur Julesnaps is a Danish akvavit at 38% ABV, made by Fur Bryghus on the island of Fur in the middle of the Limfjord as a Christmas-spiced version of the brewery's Gylden akvavit.

It starts from Fur Gylden, to which rum along with true cinnamon bark and orange peel are added, turning it into a warm, spiced Christmas snaps. The akvavit belongs to an exclusive snaps series that Fur Bryghus produces together with the micro-distillery Braunstein in Køge.

Fur Bryghus is one of Denmark's first microbreweries, founded in 2004, based on the island itself, where it also draws on mineral-rich spring water filtered through the island's layers of moler.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Warm cinnamon bark and orange peel meet a sweet rum character, with a background trace of sea buckthorn from the base akvavit.

    Palate

Spiced and round, with cinnamon and citrus peel upfront, while the rum brings soft sweetness and the sea buckthorn holds it together with a light tartness.

    Finish

Warm and long, with cinnamon and orange lingering together, closed by a quiet alcoholic glow.

    The Expert's Description

Fur Malt is a Danish akvavit at 38% ABV, spiced with elderflower and produced by Fur Bryghus on the island of Fur in the Limfjord.

The name Malt refers to the bottle's place within Fur Bryghus' snaps series rather than a malt-heavy base spirit, it is elderflower that carries the flavour. The akvavit is brewed together with the micro-distillery Braunstein in Køge, like the rest of the series.

The island of Fur is known for its moler, a pale, mineral-rich clay stone formed from volcanic ash millions of years ago, and it is through these very layers that the brewery's spring water is filtered.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

    Item no.: 2222786539-8223

In 1494, a friar at Lindores Abbey was recorded in Scotland's Exchequer Rolls making "aqua vitae" for King James IV — the earliest written evidence of Scotch whisky production in existence. Today Lindores Abbey Distillery revives that very story, using herbs foraged from the abbey's own ruins.

    The Expert's Description

Lindores Abbey Distillery Aqua Vitae is a spiced Aqua Vitae from Scotland, bottled at 40%. The bottle is the distillery's tribute to the famous 1494 record, in which the friar John Cor was issued malt to brew "aqua vitae" — the term of the day for what we now call whisky.

Rather than resting in cask, Lindores Abbey macerates and infuses the spirit with herbs and plants foraged from the abbey ruins: sweet cicely, cleavers and lemon verbena, rounded out with douglas fir. The base is distilled in traditional pot stills, and the result is a natural, herbal spirit with no added sugar — a living echo of how aqua vitae may have tasted long before whisky as we know it existed.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Light top notes of peach and pear, giving way slowly to ginger, clove and cinnamon.

    Palate

A name that promises adventure — Lost on Oak is the aquavit that found its way through toasted oak flakes and came home with depth and calm in the glass.

    The Expert's Description

Lowlands Lost on Oak is a Danish oak-aged aquavit at 42% ABV from the Danish distillery Lowlands Denmark.

The base is the classic spice blend of dill and fennel seed, coriander, pepper and orange peel, but it is the ageing on lightly toasted oak flakes that gives this aquavit its character. The flakes draw warm notes of vanilla and caramel from the wood, while the original spice profile still shines through. The result is a softer, rounder aquavit than the traditional, unaged style.

Heather, pine needle and a whisper of vanilla, as if distilled in the middle of a Norwegian heathland after rain. This is aquavit for anyone ready to step off the classic path.

    The Expert's Description

Lyng Botanical Akvavit is a Norwegian aquavit from Det Norske Brenneri, 45.9% alcohol.

The name is drawn from Norway's heather-covered moorland, and the botanicals live up to it: caraway, real vanilla pod, rosehip, mandarin, anise, pine needle, dill, liquorice root and mint all play a part in the recipe. The result is a complex, layered aquavit that moves far beyond simple caraway snaps, unfolding instead as a tribute to Norwegian nature.

Twice the casks cross the equator, rocking in a cargo hold. The sea does what no warehouse can: it gives time a rolling, restless pulse.

    The Expert's Description

Lysholm Linie Matured at Sea is a Norwegian aquavit at 41.5% ABV, matured according to the classic Linie tradition.

The aquavit is distilled from Norwegian potatoes on pot stills with a spice blend led by caraway and star anise. It then rests in Spanish Oloroso sherry casks that are sent on a months-long sea voyage, crossing the equator twice before returning home. The tradition dates back to 1805, when the Lysholm family shipped a cargo of potato aquavit to the East Indies; interest there was limited, so the cargo sailed home again, and it was only then that the voyage was found to have dramatically improved the flavour. Every drop of Linie has made the same journey ever since.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Caraway and star anise lead, with finer touches of vanilla and sherry.

    The Expert's Description

Lysholm Throndhjems Aquavit is a cask-aged Norwegian aquavit at 41.5% ABV.

The aquavit was developed for Trondheim's 1000-year anniversary, celebrated in 1997. The Throndhjems Aquavit Club was behind the development, and in December 1996 people queued for hours to get hold of the numbered bottles, then named Jubileumsaquavit. In 1998, the name was changed to Throndhjems Aquavit after Danish interests raised an objection at the EU court over the name Jubileumsaquavit. The aquavit is cask-aged for 36 months and carries a historic link to Jørgen B. Lysholm, who founded his distillery in 1821 at Lysholms Minde near Trondheim and is regarded as the originator of the entire Linie aquavit concept.

Fury is the distillery's first release, built on more than 80 years of combined wine and spirits experience among the people behind the bottle. The idea was simple: take aquavit seriously again, without making it boring.

Northeast of the Arctic Circle, where summer is short and the blueberries taste all the sweeter for it, sits a small distillery that has poured the Swedish forest floor into a bottle. Blueberry Pie is the brief, intense sweetness of summer captured in a dram, just as happy served over ice as mixed into a cocktail.

    The Expert's Description

Norrbottens Destilleri Blueberry Pie is a Swedish spirit drink bottled at 15% ABV.

The bottle comes from Norrbottens Destilleri in Töre, a small distillery in Norrbotten close to the Arctic Circle along Sweden's northern coast. The Expert's Description

O.P. Anderson Extra Oak Barrel Matured is a Swedish snaps bottled at 40% ABV.

O.P. Anderson is Sweden's oldest and best-selling aquavit brand, founded in 1891 by Carl August Anderson and named after his father, Olof Peter Anderson. The brand is now owned by the spirits group Anora and has been produced since 2018 at O.P. Anderson's own distillery in Sundsvall. The Extra edition builds on the house's classic spice profile of anise, caraway and fennel, adding an extra layer of character from malt whisky and oloroso sherry.

Did you know Gammal Fin is named directly after the label text, "Gammal Fin 1ma Aquavit", that appeared on the very first bottle O.P. Anderson showed off in 1891 - over 130 years later it still carries the family's founding recipe forward.

Three recipes, one set - Miniature Selection Mix is a journey through the O.P. Anderson aquavit universe in small, convivial bottles. Perfect when curiosity outweighs the wish to open three full-size bottles.

    The Expert's Description

O.P. Anderson Miniature Selection Mix is a Swedish organic aquavit tasting set at 37% ABV, in ten miniature bottles of 5 cl each.

The set brings together three of the house's classic aquavits in pocket format: the full-bodied Original with caraway, anise and fennel; the fresh, unaged Klar with dill and citrus; and the milder Petronella with a touch of apple. That makes it ideal for tastings, gifting or a festive table where guests get to compare styles without sharing one big bottle.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

The nose ranges from the spiced, cask-influenced Original, via the green, citrus-fresh Klar, to the soft, lightly fruity Petronella.

    Palate

The palate shifts from full and spiced to fresh and clean to softly rounded with apple, depending on which miniature is opened.

    Finish

The finish is short and spiced across all three, with a clear caraway-and-anise base.
