Light yellow color with an emerald green hue. Intense aromas of ripe fruits such as pear, peach, apricot and a hint of fennel, white flowers and freshly cut hay. The long, soft and creamy aftertaste means that the wine does not feel at all astringently dry. A lovely versatile white wine for both food and terrace.
The Viura grapes are harvested in the last weeks of September and then taken to the winery's brand new winery. The wine is then left "sur lie" (on the lees) for 5 months with weekly stirring. Bottling takes place in February and the wines are then released for sale.
The Viura grape (also known as Macabeo) is a white wine grape that is particularly widespread in Rioja and Catalonia, where it is used in the production of Cava. In addition, the grape is also used in the sweet "Vin Doux Naturel" from Roussillon. The latest venture from the renowned Spanish house Martinez Bujanda is called Finca Antiqua. When the winery decided to launch this project, they set out to find the most suitable vineyards as a starting point for the production of a wine that can stand out among the best in the world in terms of price versus quality. After a long search - which took them to most parts of Spain - they found 283 hectares of vineyards in the provinces of Cuenca and Toledo. The fields are planted with 115 hectares of Cabernet Sauvignon, 88.5 hectares of Tempranillo, 55 hectares of Merlot and 24.5 hectares of Syrah located at an altitude of 840-880 meters above sea level. The climate in the regions is blessed with cold nights and warm sunny days in late August and early September, which helps the grapes undergo a longer ripening period. After 2015's mild spring with minimal rain, July and August were some of the hottest months in living memory. However, the temperature fluctuations were large and the relatively cool nights gave the grapes the necessary "calm" to ripen slowly. Finca Antigua Viura is harvested from the Los Porches vineyard. The harvest took place in the last weeks of September under perfect conditions. Therefore, Finca Antigua itself describes the 2015 vintage as a historically good vintage.
