Dominican Republic
The next glass contains something as rare as a high ester rum from the Dominican Republic. The country that is otherwise best known for spitting out one sugar-sweet rum after another at 40% on the market. To be precise, the rum has an ester number of 474 gr./HLAA and is bottled at 65% alcohol. It is a blend of 80% 15-year-old tropical aged rum and 20% aroma grande, which is the first high ester rum produced in the Dominican Republic. I usually steer clear of rums from the country, but this sounds intriguing.

Aroma: It's not the classic Jamaican high ester notes you get here. It's still classic Central American with a distinct bourbon barrel influence. My nose smells mostly of vanilla, almonds and marzipan. The high alcohol percentage gives a much-needed kick, and I can sense a slightly tart edge with citrus notes. Perhaps this is where the aroma grande part of the blend makes its mark.

Taste: Again, classic Dominican notes. Burnt sugar, caramel and cocoa give the rum a sweet profile. The aroma grande part gives the rum a bit more bite and a drier aftertaste than I usually find in Dominican rums. We're not talking grand arome from Savanna or Hampden from Jamaica. But that's probably not what you're looking for if you choose a Dominican rum.
