The first thing people think of when they hear the word Scotland is whiskey, including Scotch as it is also called. Although Scotland is known for many things other than just whiskey, such as golf, haggis and kilts, it is for good reason that it is precisely the whiskey that, over time, has been dubbed 'Scotch'. The Scots have always been the true pioneers of whiskey making, which many others have tried to emulate, including the Irish, the Americans and even the Danes. However, none of these places has given rise to a similarity between their nation and their whiskeys. Even in Ireland, where one is also very proud of their Irish whiskeys, the impact and marketing effect has been as great as in Scotland.

It is especially because of the very varied nature of the Scottish highland and lowland respectively, as well as a fantastic entrepreneurial spirit that has enabled the Scots to produce such a large and varied selection of whiskey over time.

Generally, Scottish whiskey is divided into three main types:

Each whiskey type has its own flavor and aroma, but the most prevalent type of Scotch Whiskey is Malt Whiskey. It is also from here that one has the very well known Single Malt Whiskeys, which is what most associate with Scottish whiskeys.

Find the right whiskey for your Scotch and soda

It's not just the whiskeys that 'Scotch' has become synonymous with. The same goes for drinks, specifically the legendary Scotch and soda cocktail. This cocktail originated in the USA in the 19th century as part of the highball trend imported to the United States by Englishmen.

Scotch and soda basically consists of Scotch whiskey and carbonated water - these can be both Blended Whiskeys, Grain Whiskeys and Single Malt Whiskeys. However, most people here agree that Single Malt Whiskeys are the best for this particular drink. Therefore, if you want an exclusive version of "Scotch and Soda", we highly recommend you use a Glenlivet Scotch or a Macallan Scotch.

How to make the drink:

Pour two parts of Scotch Whiskey into a glass and six parts of carbonated water. That is it! Here you can choose to use ordinary carbonated water or carbonated water with citrus as you prefer.

A "Scotch and Soda" can be a great way to start drinking whiskey, as the carbonated water makes the drink even more fresh, which especially young palates prefer.

On the small Scottish island of Jura, home to far more red deer than people, whisky has been distilled since 1810. This bottle is an older, discontinued bottling of Jura 10 Year Old - from a time when the label still carried the name The Isle of Jura Distillery Co. Ltd., and the bottle held a full litre rather than today's 70cl.
Expert Description
Jura 10 Year Old is an Islands Single Malt Scotch Whisky bottled at 43%.
The label states that the whisky is made with water from the Bhaille Mharghaidh spring on the island, and that the distillery in Craighouse has been distilling since 1810. Isle of Jura Distillery remains the only distillery on the island, and ownership has changed hands several times over the decades - from Invergordon Distillers in 1985 to Whyte & Mackay, who took over in 1993.
The colour has been adjusted with caramel, as stated directly on the label - a common practice at the time to keep the colour consistent from bottle to bottle.
As this is an older, discontinued bottling, no guarantee can be given regarding drinkability or fill level. Condition of label, capsule, and contents will vary from bottle to bottle, and this should be regarded primarily as a collector's item rather than an everyday dram.
Tasting Notes
Nose
Honey and ripe pears open the nose, with a trace of hay and a whisper of sea air in the background - typical of the lighter, less peated style found in older Isle of Jura bottlings.
Palate
Light and malty, with vanilla and sweetness, cut by a faint salty edge and a touch of smoke that never takes over.
Finish
Short to medium, dry and lightly salted, with a last note of honey.

The 100% Islay series is unique even by Kilchoman's own standards: the barley is grown on the distillery's own land, floor malted on site, and distilled, matured and bottled without ever leaving the farm. FC Whisky Denmark's eighth single cask is a cask strength release with a markedly different temperament from the earlier casks in the series — a fresh bourbon spirit that received a short but distinct sherry finish.

Kilchoman 2008/2013 Single Cask FC Whisky Denmark 8 is an Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky, 5 years old from a single cask and bottled at cask strength, 60.2 %.
The whisky was distilled on 12 September 2008 and matured for just under five years in a fresh bourbon cask, before receiving a finishing period in an Oloroso sherry hogshead and being bottled on 16 September 2013. Only 266 numbered bottles exist in total from this cask.
Kilchoman's then manager, John MacLellan, described the cask himself as an appealing combination of peat, fruit and spice, underscored by the mild sweetness of the sherry finish — a profile that still holds true in the glass today.

Nose
Peat smoke meets dark fruit and spice, with a mild sweetness from the Oloroso finish tying the aromas together.
Palate
Rich and round, an ideal combination of bourbon-matured Kilchoman character and deep sherry tones, with spice, smoke and a sweetness of raisin and ripe plum.

Pedro Ximénez is the sweetest and darkest of all sherry styles — a wine so thick with sun-dried grapes it's almost spoonable. Kilchoman let it work all the way through their spirit, resulting in the distillery's first ever release fully matured in PX casks.

Kilchoman 2023 PX Sherry Cask Matured is an Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky, fully matured in ex-PX Sherry casks for a minimum of five years and bottled at 50 %.
Pedro Ximénez, or simply PX, is made from sun-dried grapes pressed into a thick, dark and intensely sweet wine. The casks that held it give the whisky a markedly different character to drier sherry styles like Fino or Amontillado — here it's all about deep sweetness, dried fruit and an almost syrupy texture.
Because the spirit spent its entire maturation in the PX casks rather than just a short finish, the sweetness is woven deep into the whisky from the start. That makes it one of the darkest and most dessert-like Kilchoman releases to date, with Islay's peat smoke having to work its way through layer upon layer of raisin and caramel.
Tasting notes
Nose
Raisins, prune blossom and dark molasses pour out, backed by toasted walnuts and a deep, sweet peat smoke.
Palate
Intense sweetness from the start — syrup, dates and dark chocolate — before the smoke slowly takes over, bringing balance with a dry, ashy edge.
Finish
Long, sweet and smoky at once, with a final trace of liquorice and toasted oak.

The release is the result of carefully selected casks, brought together to create a harmonious flavour experience. Combining ex-bourbon casks with Portuguese red wine oak casks achieves a deep and complex flavour profile, where the red wine's fruit sweetness layers on top of Kilchoman's classic peated character.
The result is a soft, round whisky where notes of peated smoke, caramel, vanilla and dried fruit dance in a different balance to the distillery's more familiar sherry and port-matured releases.
