The black color of the rum is created by maturing it in extra toasted and thus extra dark oak barrels. Often these rums are also spiced rums, where flavor components are added that the rum does not naturally achieve through the aging and blending process. Puntacana Club Black Rum is made from a base of mother rums with an average age of 25 years, and this base is blended with various younger and carefully selected rums (1 - 10 years) sourced mainly from Nicaragua and Colombia, which are blended with older distillates from Brazil, Panama and Trinidad & Tobago. After the rum is blended, vanilla, local Dominican herbs, spices and sherry from Andalusia in Spain are added. Puntacana Club Black Rum appears very powerful with its dark color, spicy aroma and taste of licorice and freshly ground pepper, but with the sweetness of the vanilla and the fruity sherry, it is actually very round and smooth.
