Port Wine

Port wine is a fortified wine that originates from the Douro Valley in Portugal. It is typically rich, sweet, and full-bodied, with flavors of ripe fruit, nuts, spices, and sometimes chocolate. Port is fortified with grape spirit during fermentation, which stops the process and leaves residual sugar, giving it its characteristic sweetness. It comes in various styles, including Ruby, Tawny, Vintage, Late Bottled Vintage (LBV), and White Port, each offering unique flavors and aging characteristics. Port is often enjoyed as a dessert wine or paired with cheese, chocolate, or rich, savory dishes.

  • Bottle of Niepoort Dry White dry white Port from the Douro Valley
    Item no.: 059763-615-407

On a warm summer day by the Douro river, one drink keeps appearing on the café tables: a clear, dry white Port over ice with tonic and a slice of lemon. This bottle is the house's answer to exactly that drink.

    Expert's Description

Niepoort Dry White is a Portuguese dry White Port from the Douro Valley, bottled at 19.5%.

The wine is made from white grape varieties from the Douro and matured oxidatively in small, old oak casks, which gives it its characteristic nutty, spirit-driven style. Unlike sweet white Ports, less sugar is added during production, resulting in a markedly drier, more direct Port.

Niepoort was founded in 1842 by the Dutch van der Niepoort family in Vila Nova de Gaia. The dry style has long been a fixture of the house's range, precisely because it suits the light, refreshing drinking culture common in the Douro Valley in summer.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Golden-brown with a scent of nuts, almonds and ripe peaches, spiced with a hint of caramel.

    Palate

Concentrated and spirit-driven, with a dry nutty character and a hint of raisin, carried by a fresh, clean finish.

    Finish

Short to medium, dry and lightly warm, with a lingering nutty note.

  • Bottle of Niepoort LBV 2018 Port with dark red label
    Item no.: 059763-615-404

Think of it as Vintage Port's more impatient little sister - ready to drink much sooner, yet built with the same craftsmanship and the same grapes from the same year.

    Expert's Description

Niepoort LBV 2018 is a Portuguese Late Bottled Vintage Port from the Douro Valley, bottled at 19.5%.

The wine comes from a single vintage, 2018, and is aged in oak casks for several years before bottling - markedly longer than a classic Vintage Port, which spends only a short time in wood. Unlike many other LBVs on the market, Niepoort chooses to bottle theirs unfiltered, giving it more character but also a light sediment over time.

Niepoort was founded in 1842 by the Dutch van der Niepoort family in Vila Nova de Gaia, and the house has since held onto a traditional, hands-on approach to its Ports, even in more accessible categories such as LBV.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Forest fruits, fig and spice, complemented by dark chocolate and a touch of black pepper.

    Palate

Full and creamy, with sweet plum, cherry and marzipan, lifted by pepper, chocolate and a faintly bitter herbal note.

    Finish

Long and controlled, with soft, inviting tannins that leave a pleasant, warm impression.

    Did You Know?

Many LBV Ports are fined and filtered so they can be poured straight from the bottle without decanting. Niepoort keeps to the unfiltered style, closer to classic Vintage Port, which means the bottle can develop a light sediment over time - a detail that reveals the house's fondness for traditional craftsmanship.

  • Bottle of dark ruby-red Port wine with classic label
    Item no.: 059763-615-431

There is a Port for every mood, and Ruby is the one that asks for no reflection - just a glass, preferably two, and an evening that need not end too soon.

    Expert's Description

Niepoort Ruby is a Portuguese Ruby Port from the Douro Valley, bottled at 19.5%.

The grapes are traditionally trodden by foot in granite troughs called lagares, after which the wine is aged in large oak vats in Niepoort's lodges by the river in Vila Nova de Gaia. Ruby is the youngest and freshest of the house's Port styles, bottled at an average age of around 3 years to preserve as much as possible of the grape's original dark fruit character.

Niepoort was founded in 1842 by the Dutch van der Niepoort family and has, generation after generation, refined its approach to precisely this Port style, which today ranks among the best-selling in the house's entire range.

Where Tawny draws its character from long, oxidative cask ageing, Ruby is made to keep the fruit fresh and direct - two different but equally classic paths through the same Port tradition.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Dark berries, sweet cherry and a touch of dark chocolate.

    Palate

Fresh and fruit-driven with juicy plum and berries, supported by a mineral character and good balance.

    Finish

Spicy and juicy, with a clean, fresh close free of heavy, oxidative notes.

  • Bottle of amber-brown Port wine with classic label
    Item no.: 059763-615-432

The name "tawny" describes the amber-brown hue a Port slowly moves toward when, for years, it is allowed to breathe through porous oak staves instead of resting sealed and protected in bottle.

    Expert's Description

Niepoort Tawny is a Portuguese Tawny Port from the Douro Valley, bottled at 19.5%.

The wine ages in oak casks for around 3.5 years, slightly longer than the house's Ruby, giving it time to develop its characteristic reddish-brown colour and soft, nutty notes, without being classed as an aged Port. The mild, oxidative cask ageing makes Tawny one of the most versatile and approachable Port styles.

Niepoort was founded in 1842 by the Dutch van der Niepoort family in Vila Nova de Gaia, where the house's lodges still stand today, close to the banks of the Douro River. Ruby and Tawny are often seen as the house's two "gateways" to the Port category, meant as an introduction before venturing into the more complex aged and vintage-dated styles.

Where Ruby holds on to the fruit, Tawny makes more room for spice, caramel and dried fruit - two sides of the same fundamental Port craft.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Nutty notes of almond, dried figs and a touch of caramel.

    Palate

Soft and light, with gentle, sweet tannins and a pleasant, rounded sweetness.

Trudy comes in a generous one-litre bottle with a hand-drawn label and no pretensions about being fancy. She was born out of Niepoort's Nat'Cool movement, where the whole point is wine that is easy to love and easy to share.

    Expert's Description

Niepoort Trudy the True Ruby is a Portuguese Ruby Port from the Douro Valley, bottled at 19.5%.

The wine is made in a light, fresh style with minimal intervention and matured briefly in wood, giving it a hint of toasted oak over the fresh berry fruit. It belongs to Niepoort's Nat'Cool project, which the house launched in 2020 together with a group of like-minded producers focused on low-intervention, unpretentious wines.

Niepoort was founded in 1842 by the Dutch van der Niepoort family in Vila Nova de Gaia. Under Dirk Niepoort, the house has developed a distinctly experimental side alongside its classic Ports, and Trudy belongs right there.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

    Palate

  • Bottle of Niepoort Vintage 2003 vintage Port from the Douro Valley
    Item no.: 059763-615-351

Some vintages become legends while they are still resting in the vat. 2003 was one of those summers, when the sun scorched the Douro's schist so intensely that almost every Port house in the valley chose to declare the same year.

    Expert's Description

Niepoort Vintage 2003 is a Portuguese Vintage Port from the Douro Valley, bottled at 20%.

The grapes come from a traditional Douro field blend of varieties including Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca and Tinta Roriz, picked in an unusually hot, dry season. After fermentation the wine spends a short period in large oak vats before being bottled unfiltered, ready to develop for decades in the bottle.

Niepoort was founded in 1842 by the Dutch van der Niepoort family, who settled in Vila Nova de Gaia to trade in Port wine. Today the house is run by the fifth and sixth generations, with Dirk Niepoort widely credited for putting the family name firmly on the world stage.

2003 is regarded as one of the great, broadly declared vintages in Port history, and Niepoort's wine is frequently singled out as one of the most complete from that year.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Deep and complex, with preserved blackberry and dark cherry, blackcurrant and violets, spiced with dark chocolate, liquorice and a cool touch of menthol.

    Palate

Concentrated yet poised, where sweet dark fruit and cherry liqueur ride on lively acidity, while the abundant, fine tannins give an almost chalky grip.

    Finish

Long and layered, with cocoa, roasted coffee, black pepper and a mineral drive that carries on into blackberry and a hint of orange peel.

2003 is one of the rare vintages where virtually every major Port house chose to declare the same year, which makes fine bottles from this vintage sought after among collectors. Niepoort's wine is regularly cited as one of the most finely built of the season, with an ageing potential stretching several decades ahead.

    Did You Know?

The extremely hot European summer of 2003 produced such small, concentrated grapes that several Douro producers had to pick earlier than usual to preserve freshness in the must - one reason the vintage is regarded today as unusually powerful yet surprisingly fresh.

Long before Ruby and Tawny became the international faces of Port, it was the white version that the Douro Valley's own wine farmers poured for everyday use. Niepoort White is a reminder of that role.

    Expert's Description

Niepoort White is a Portuguese White Port from the Douro Valley, bottled at 19.5%.

The wine is made from white grape varieties from the Douro, fermented and matured for a shorter period in oak casks, giving it a golden-brown colour and a fresh, nutty character without the long, oxidative ageing that characterises the house's older White bottlings.

Niepoort was founded in 1842 by the Dutch van der Niepoort family in Vila Nova de Gaia. White Port has been part of the range from the start, long before the red, aged Tawny style truly became the house's international hallmark.

    Tasting Notes

    Item no.: 22227865464-362767676888891

Twenty years hide inside every glass: a golden-amber Port where fresh fruit has long since transformed into raisins, nuts and warm caramel.

    Expert's Description

Pacheca 20 Year Old Tawny Port is a 20-year-old tawny Port from the Douro Valley in Portugal with an alcohol content of 19.5%.

The wine is a blend of several Port vintages that have been allowed to mature in oak casks in the estate's cellars for two decades. The slow, controlled oxidation through the wood gives the characteristic amber colour and draws out toffee, nutty and spiced notes not found in a young, fruit-driven Port.

Behind the bottle stands Quinta da Pacheca, one of the most respected estates in the Douro Valley, located in Cambres in the Lamego district at the heart of the region's first Pombaline demarcation. The estate was among the first in the area to bottle Port under its own name, a practice upheld since the early 1900s.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

The nose offers prunes and leather alongside toasted hazelnuts, dried figs, caramel and a fine note of vanilla.

    Palate

The palate is smooth and silky, with toasty, oxidative notes leading into dried peach, while a balanced acidity gives a fresh counterpoint to the nuts and caramel.

    Item no.: 22227865464-362767676888890

Thirty years in the quiet of oak casks have given this tawny a depth that only time can build. Behind every glass lies a whole Douro landscape of schist, sun and patience.

    Expert's Description

Pacheca 30 Year Old Tawny Port is a 30-year-old tawny Port from the Douro Valley in Portugal with an alcohol content of 19.5%.

The wine is a blend of several vintages that have rested for decades in 550-litre oak casks in the estate's cooler cellars. The slow, gradual oxidation through the wood shifts the colour from deep ruby to warm orange and amber, while drawing out sweetness, nuttiness and dried fruit in both aroma and flavour.

Quinta da Pacheca is one of the most respected estates in the Douro Valley and among the first to bottle Port under its own name. The property is first mentioned in a document from April 1738 under the name 'Pacheca', after its then owner Mariana Pacheco Pereira. In 1903 Count José Freire de Serpa Leitão Pimentel took over the estate, and in 1916 he had the granite lagares built where grapes are still foot-trodden today.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

The aroma offers balsamic tones and a hint of polished antique wood, alongside raisins, dried figs and a fine caramel sweetness that grows as the wine sits in the glass.

    Palate

On the palate the wine is deep and layered, with toasted nuts, dried orange peel and spice, while the mid-palate delivers fig biscuit, dates, burnt caramel and a hint of Christmas cake.

    Finish

The finish is long and dries out into a warm nutty note that lingers well after the last sip.

    Did You Know?

Over thirty years in cask, a tawny gradually loses its red colour in favour of orange and amber hues - meaning you can often guess a tawny's age simply by holding the glass up to the light.

The wine has then rested in 600-litre casks for roughly four years before being bottled unfiltered - a method that retains more colour, tannin and complexity, but also means natural sediment can form in the bottle.

Behind the wine stands Quinta da Pacheca, one of the most respected estates in the Douro Valley, where traditional foot-treading in lagares still takes place alongside modern cellar practices. The 2017 vintage forms part of the estate's regular LBV line, selected to showcase a strong single harvest without requiring the long bottle ageing a vintage Port demands.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

The nose is intense, with rockrose flower and a wealth of fresh and dried wild fruits.

    Palate

The palate has excellent volume and structure, with firm yet polished tannins that give the wine body without feeling tight.

    Finish

The finish is fresh and long, with a persistent berry note that carries the imprint of the unfiltered bottling.

    Did You Know?

Because the wine is unfiltered, a thin layer of sediment can settle at the bottom of the bottle - a completely natural sign that the wine has not been stripped of the particles that otherwise give it extra depth and colour.

    Item no.: 22227865464-362767694

Dark forest berries and a velvety texture - this ruby reserve is the Port that instantly reminds you why the style became a classic the world over.

    Expert's Description

Pacheca Ruby Reserve Port is a ruby reserve Port from the Douro Valley in Portugal with an alcohol content of 19.5%.

The wine is a blend of several Ports with an average age of six to seven years, made from classic Douro grapes including Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca and Tinta Barroca. A brief period in wood casks adds rounded tannins and a light oxidative depth without stripping too much of the fresh berry fruit that defines a ruby style.

Behind the bottle stands Quinta da Pacheca, one of the most respected estates in the Douro Valley and among the first to bottle Port under its own name. The estate is documented back to 1738 and has been run since 1903 with a focus on both traditional and experimental grape varieties.

    Tasting Notes

A ruby reserve sits stylistically between the youngest ruby Ports and the older, cask-aged tawnies - it has spent a little more time in cask than a basic ruby, yet still retains far more of the fresh, dark berry fruit than a tawny ever will.

    Item no.: 22227865464-362767676888892

2019 brought a long, dry harvest to the Douro Valley - and the result now waits in the glass: dark, powerful and full of black berry fruit.

    Expert's Description

Pacheca Vintage Port 2019 is a vintage Port from the Douro Valley in Portugal with an alcohol content of 19%.

The wine comes exclusively from the 2019 harvest, marked by an unusually long, slow ripening period following a dry winter and spring with little rain for the rest of the season. The grapes are traditionally foot-trodden in lagares, after which the must is fortified with grape spirit, halting fermentation early and preserving much of the natural sweetness.

The wine is made under the direction of Quinta da Pacheca's own winemaker, Maria Serpa Pimentel, and carries the estate's signature style, balancing power with elegance. Quinta da Pacheca is one of the most respected names in the Douro Valley, with winemaking on the property documented back to 1738.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

The nose is full and elegant, with complex black fruit, fresh hints of menthol and eucalyptus, and a fine note of violet.

    Palate

The palate explodes with wild berries, backed by firm yet elegant tannins that give the wine structure without feeling hard.

    Finish

The finish is long and spiced, with a persistent tannic grip that points toward further development for years in bottle.

    Investment Potential

As a classic vintage Port from a single strong harvest, this bottle has natural ageing potential over many years and belongs to the category collectors typically set aside. Several critics single out 2019 as a vintage with good concentration, adding to its appeal among connoisseurs.

    Did You Know?

Unlike most other Port styles, a vintage Port is only cask-aged for a short time, typically two years, before bottling - all the further maturation and complexity it develops over decades therefore happens in the bottle itself, not in cask.

    Item no.: 22222015-99663

From one of the Douro Valley's largest and oldest estates comes this LBV - a Port where five hundred hectares of vines and centuries of history are concentrated into a single bottle.

    Expert's Description

Quinta De Ventozelo LBV 2014 is a Late Bottled Vintage Port from the Douro Valley in Portugal with an alcohol content of 20%.

The wine comes from the 2014 harvest and spent a few years in cask before being bottled ready to drink - a style that gives it the weight and maturity usually associated with an older vintage Port, without the long bottle ageing. The grapes come from the estate's own vineyards, which span more than 500 hectares between Pinhão and Ervedosa do Douro.

Quinta de Ventozelo is one of the oldest and largest quintas in the Douro Valley. The property can be traced back to a royal survey from 1288 and was once farmed by Cistercian monks before passing to a noble family from Lamego in the 1500s. In 2014 the estate was acquired by Gran Cruz, Portugal's largest exporter of Port wine, which has since modernised both vineyards and cellars and opened the estate to wine tourism.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

The nose offers dark, macerated berries and a hint of spice that hints at the weight the wine has gained during cask ageing.

    Palate

The palate is full and round, with ripe dark fruit and soft, well-integrated tannins that give a generous yet approachable impression.

    Finish

    Expert's Description

Quinta Do Infantado 2020 Vintage is a vintage Port from the Douro Valley in Portugal with an alcohol content of 19.5%.

The wine comes exclusively from the 2020 harvest and is made in the traditional way, with foot-treading and brief cask ageing before bottling for further maturation. The style is powerful yet fresh, with a green edge that plays against the sweet, black cherry and blackberry fruit.

Behind the bottle stands Quinta do Infantado, founded in 1816 and run by the Roseira family since the late 1800s. In 1979 the estate became the first in the Douro Valley to bottle its own Port on site, a pioneering decision that still shapes its style today, with third-generation João Roseira overseeing both vineyard and cellar across the estate's 46 hectares.

    Expert's Description

Quinta Do Infantado Tawny is a tawny Port from the Douro Valley in Portugal with an alcohol content of 19.5%.

The wine is a blend of two to three vintages matured in cask in the estate's own cellars, giving it a characteristic red colour with golden edges and a profile that is more restrained in sweetness than many other tawnies on the market.

Quinta do Infantado was founded in 1816 in the Cima Corgo section of the Douro Valley and has been owned by the Roseira family since the late 1800s. In 1979 the estate became the first in the Douro Valley to bottle its own Port on the property instead of sending it to Vila Nova de Gaia, breaking with the trading monopoly of the time in a move that has defined the estate's identity ever since. Today third-generation João Roseira runs the 46 hectares of vineyards, 12 of which are farmed organically.

Three miniature tasting glasses - white, ruby and tawny - gathered in one box, letting you experience the full range of a seven-generation estate in one sitting.

    Expert's Description

Quinta do Estanho Gift Box is a gift set with three different Port wines in 5 cl bottles from the Douro Valley in Portugal, with an alcohol content of 19.5%.

The box brings together three classic styles from the estate: a fine white Port, a fresh ruby Port and a cask-matured tawny, allowing you to taste your way through the range from young, fruit-driven Port to the more mature, nutty style, all in one gift set.

Quinta do Estanho can be traced back to 1757, when the estate's wines were included in the very first official demarcation of the Douro region under the Marquis of Pombal. The estate sits on the left bank of the River Pinhão at around 300 metres altitude and has been family-owned across seven generations. Today it is run by the descendants of Jaime Acácio Queiroz Cardoso, who combine traditional foot-treading in stone lagares with modern cellar practices.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

The three styles range from the white Port's bright, citrus-like aroma, through the ruby's fresh dark berries, to the tawny's nutty and caramel notes.

    Palate

The white offers a light, almost dry fruitiness, the ruby is full with dark berry fruit, while the tawny shows roundness with dried fruit and nuts from its cask ageing.

    Finish

Common to all three is a clean, balanced finish that shows the estate's craftsmanship without becoming heavy in a single 5 cl measure.

2016 was one of those years when the Douro's grapes reached a rare concentration. Five years on, unfiltered and full of spiced dark fruit, this LBV shows what the wait can achieve.

    Expert's Description

Quinta do Noval 2016 Late Bottled Vintage is a Portuguese LBV Port from the Douro Valley, aged in oak casks and bottled at 19.5%.

Like the house's other LBV releases, the 2016 vintage is made from grapes trodden using the traditional method and sourced exclusively from that single harvest. The Port is aged for up to five years in cask before being bottled unfiltered, giving it a more complex, spicier style than a younger Ruby Port.

2016 brought a mix of early-season rain and warm, dry weather heading into harvest, giving grapes with good balance between sweetness and acidity. Quinta do Noval has made LBV since the 1970s as an accessible expression of the house's Vintage style.

    Expert's Description

Quinta do Noval Extra Dry White Port is a Portuguese white, dry Port from the Douro Valley, aged in oak vats and bottled at 19.5%.

The wine is made from white Douro grapes such as Malvasia Fina, Gouveio, Rabigato and Códega, half of which get brief skin contact while the other half ferments without it, giving both aroma and freshness. It's then aged for around three years in oak vats before blending and bottling.

White Port has existed since the 19th century but has enjoyed a revival in recent years as a fresh aperitif, often served with tonic and ice. Quinta do Noval's Extra Dry style is one of the driest in the category, setting it apart from the sweeter white Ports many people know.

    Expert's Description

Quinta do Noval Fine Ruby Port is a Portuguese Ruby Port from the Douro Valley, aged in large oak vats and bottled at 19.5%.

Unlike Tawny, Ruby Port is aged briefly in large, near-airtight vessels, so the wine keeps its deep red colour and fresh berry fruit rather than developing nutty and caramel notes. The blend is composed from several vintages to ensure a consistent, fruit-driven style.

Quinta do Noval has produced Port on its own land since 1715, but it was only after António José da Silva rebuilt the estate in 1894 that the house's modern reputation as one of the Douro's leading producers truly took shape. Fine Ruby is one of the estate's best-selling bottles and serves as an accessible introduction to the style.

Five years in cask before the bottle is even filled — that's the recipe behind an LBV, giving the power of the grapes time to settle. 2017 was a warm year in the Douro, and it shows in the glass.

    Expert's Description

Quinta do Noval Late Bottled Vintage 2017 is a Portuguese LBV Port from the Douro Valley, aged in oak casks and bottled at 19.5%.

LBV stands for Late Bottled Vintage and is made on the same principles as a classic Vintage Port — the grapes are trodden traditionally, and only the finest lots from a single year are used. The difference lies in the ageing: while a Vintage Port is bottled after just two years, an LBV matures for up to five years in cask before being bottled, unfiltered.

2017 was another warm, dry year in the Douro Valley, giving grapes with high ripeness and concentration. Quinta do Noval has made LBV Ports for decades as a way of making the house's Vintage style more accessible without compromising on method.

Because an LBV is bottled unfiltered, it can develop a light sediment over time — just like a classic Vintage Port — a sign that it's made using the traditional method rather than rushed through production.

  • Bottle of Quinta do Noval Silval Vintage 2015 with dark label
    Item no.: 22227865464-19936

2015 was one of those years when the Douro truly showed its strength, and the Silval vineyard yielded grapes with both power and elegance. The result is a young, lively Port that's already a pleasure to drink.

    Expert's Description

Quinta do Noval Silval Vintage 2015 is a Portuguese Vintage Port from the Douro Valley, aged in oak casks and bottled at 19.5%.

Silval is the name of one of Quinta do Noval's own vineyards, separate from the legendary Nacional parcel, whose vines were never touched by phylloxera. The Silval grapes are trodden using the traditional method and made with the same care as the house's other Vintage Ports, but the wine is typically released at a more accessible price and enjoyed younger.

2015 is recognised as one of the strong Douro vintages of the past decade, with warm, dry weather that gave grapes good concentration and ripeness. Silval Vintage 2015 is therefore an example of a Quinta do Noval wine where both power and finesse are present even at a young age.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

The nose is youthful and intense, with ripe dark berries, blackcurrant and a hint of violet.

    Palate

The palate is full-bodied and well-structured, with juicy blackberry, dark chocolate and firm yet rounded tannins.

    Finish

The finish is long, spicy and full of dark fruit, with a fine acidity that keeps the wine fresh.

Silval Vintage is a single-vineyard Vintage Port from a recognised year, and this type of bottle is regularly sought after by collectors wanting to follow a producer's development year by year. It is, however, more accessible than Quinta do Noval's absolute top wines and is expected to be enjoyed rather than cellared for decades.

    Did You Know?

Right next to the Silval vineyard lies the legendary Nacional parcel, planted with ungrafted, phylloxera-resistant vines that Quinta do Noval has never replanted onto rootstock — one of very few places in the world where Port is still made from grapes on their own, original roots.

  • Bottle of Quinta do Noval Tawny Port with golden label
    Item no.: 22227865464-19930

For centuries the sun-warmed slopes of the Douro have supplied grapes to Quinta do Noval, where the finest casks are blended into a round, golden Tawny. This bottling is the estate's entry point to the style — approachable, yet full of character.

    Expert's Description

Quinta do Noval Tawny Port is a Portuguese Tawny Port from the Douro Valley, aged in oak casks and bottled at 19.5%.

The Tawny style is created by maturing the wine oxidatively in smaller oak casks for several years, during which it slowly loses its red hue in favour of golden and amber tones. The winemaker blends several vintages and casks so the result stays consistent from bottle to bottle, year after year.

Quinta do Noval has stood alone on the north bank of the Douro since 1715 and was rebuilt by António José da Silva in 1894, after phylloxera had devastated the vineyards. Today the estate is one of the most respected in the Douro, known for both its legendary Vintage Ports and more everyday styles such as this one.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

The nose offers dried fig, orange peel and a touch of caramel, lifted by a light nutty note from the cask ageing.

    Palate

The palate is soft and round, with ripe raisin, burnt sugar and a warm spiciness that keeps sweetness and freshness in balance.

    Finish

The finish is medium in length with a faintly bitter nutty note that rounds the wine off neatly.

Unlike Ruby Port, which is aged in large, airtight tanks to preserve its fruit, Tawny is deliberately matured in smaller casks that let in a little air year after year — a slow process that gives the wine its characteristic golden-brown colour.

  • Bottle of deep ruby-red port wine from Miguel's
    Item no.: 22227865464-32547

Young, deep ruby-red and packed with fresh berry fruit - this Port is the classic entry point into a style the Braga family has cultivated since 1926.

    Expert's Description

Miguel's Ruby Port is a ruby Port from the Douro Valley in Portugal with an alcohol content of 19.5%.

Ruby Port is characterised by a short period in wood casks, typically up to three years, during which only a little oxygen reaches the wine. This preserves the deep ruby colour and the fresh, fruit-driven character that sets the style apart from the more cask-influenced tawny Ports.

Behind Miguel's stands a family tradition dating back to 1926, while the vineyard itself was planted as early as 1845 by the Baron of Seixo. The estate spans 200 hectares between the river and the mountains and uses classic Douro grapes such as Touriga Franca and Tinta Roriz, supplemented by Touriga Nacional, Tinta Barroca and Tinto Cão.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

The nose is young and expressive, with red berries such as cherry and raspberry leading the way.

    Palate

The palate is full and aromatic, with fresh red and dark berries giving a lively, fruit-driven impression.

    Finish

The finish is pleasant and lightly sweet without becoming heavy or intense.

    Did You Know?

Ruby is the best-selling Port style in the world precisely because it takes the least time to produce - while a tawny or vintage can take decades to mature, a ruby is ready for bottling after just a couple of years, making it the most accessible entry point into Port.

  • Bottle of Warre's Royal Guards' Finest Reserve with reddish-brown label
    Item no.: 22227865464-18685

A toast at the changing of the guard has become a fixed tradition at Amalienborg - and behind that tradition stands a bottle from one of Porto's oldest houses. This Reserve was created for that very occasion, but works just as well on the sofa at home.

    Expert's Description

Warre's Royal Guards' Finest Reserve is a Portuguese Reserve Tawny Port from the Douro Valley, aged in oak casks and bottled at 20%.

The Port is made from selected grapes from Warre's own vineyards in Pinhão and the Rio Torto valley, where only the most fruit-driven and full-bodied casks are chosen for this particular Reserve. It's then matured for at least three years in oak casks in Vila Nova de Gaia before blending and bottling.

The name comes from a tradition within the Danish Royal Life Guards, where the outgoing commander of the guard traditionally welcomes his successor with a glass of Warre's Port. Warre's was awarded the title of Royal Court Supplier in 1960, and the house has supplied Port to the British and wider European market since 1670 as the oldest British Port house in Portugal.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

The nose offers ripe plum and cherry, with a touch of spice and a light brownish, tawny-like tone.

    Palate

The palate is complex and well-structured, with sweetness and fruit in fine balance and a warm, round body.

    Finish

The finish is long with persistent fruit and a mild spiced close.

  • Sleek bottle of Warre's Otima 10 year Tawny Port in amber colour
    Item no.: 22227865464-8690

A lightly chilled Tawny in a sleek bottle - Otima 10 Years is made for warm afternoons where a heavy, traditional Port bottle would feel out of place. Ten years in cask give it all the character it needs.

    Expert's Description

Warre's Otima 10 Years is a Portuguese age-declared Tawny Port from the Douro Valley, aged in oak casks and bottled at 20%.

Fermentation is stopped by adding grape spirit, after which the Port matures in smaller oak casks for an average of ten years. This gives a lighter, more delicate style than the older 20-year version, with a focus on fresh fruit rather than heavy spice.

Warre's is the oldest British Port house in Portugal, founded in 1670, and has been owned by the Symington family since 1908. The Otima range was developed as a modern take on Tawny, designed to be kept in the fridge and served chilled - an approach that sets it apart from traditional Port served at room temperature.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

The nose offers ripe fruit, roasted nuts and a touch of orange marmalade.

    Palate

The palate is light and delicate, with dates, honey and a fine nutty note carried by a pleasant sweetness.

    Item no.: 22227865464-18511

Twenty years in dark oak casks have given this Tawny a depth of roasted nuts and orange peel that only time can create. The bottle itself breaks with tradition too - sleek, modern and ready for the fridge.

    Expert's Description

Warre's Otima 20 Years is a Portuguese age-declared Tawny Port from the Douro Valley, aged in oak casks and bottled at 20%.

The Otima range was created as a break from the classic, heavy Port bottle. Instead of the traditional Bordeaux shape, Otima comes in a sleek, modern decanter-style bottle, designed to be kept in the fridge and poured as a chilled aperitif or digestif - an unusual approach for Port when the range was launched.

Warre's was founded in 1670 and is the oldest British Port house in Portugal - likely the oldest British-owned company in continental Europe. Since 1905 the Symington family has been linked to the house, and from 1908 Warre's was fully owned by the Symingtons, who still run it today.
