In Baixo Corgo, where the terraced slopes of the Douro drop steeply toward the river, the Martha family has been growing grapes since 1727. Pink is the youngest style in the house's range, rosé in colour and built for drinking young rather than laying down.

    Expert's Description

Martha's Pink Rosé Port is a Portuguese Rosé Port from the Douro Valley, matured in stainless steel and bottled at 19%.

The wine is made with a brief skin contact, under 48 hours, just long enough for the grape skins to tint the must a clear pink before pressing. It is a different path from classic red Port, where the skins are left in contact for far longer to draw out colour and tannin.

Martha's Wine & Spirits traces its roots back to 1727, when the family settled as grape growers in the Baixo Corgo district. Pink Rosé is the house's answer to a younger, more relaxed style of Port, meant for a summer glass rather than an armchair after dinner.

The wine rests exclusively in stainless steel tanks, never in wood, to preserve its young fruit and keep oxidative notes at bay. That means there is no vintage or age statement attached to it, only a style built to be enjoyed within a reasonably short time of bottling.

    Did You Know?

Rosé Port is a fairly recent invention in the centuries-old Douro. The category only emerged in the 2000s, when producers began experimenting with brief skin contact to capture Port's fresher, younger side, a sharp contrast to a family that has been growing grapes in the Douro since 1727.

Frequently Asked Questions about Martha's Pink Rosé Port

What does Martha's Pink Rosé Port taste like?

It tastes fresh and fruity, with clear notes of raspberry and cherry and a touch of blossom. The style is lighter and more acidic than a classic red Port, because the grapes only spend a short time in contact with the skins.

Should Pink Port be served chilled?

Yes, it is best served cold, ideally at 6-8°C. The chill lifts the fruit and makes the wine more refreshing, which is why it works so well as an aperitif.

What is the difference between rosé Port and regular red Port?

The difference lies in the skin contact. For rosé Port, the grapes are pressed after less than 48 hours with the skins, while classic red Port spends far longer extracting colour, tannin and structure.

How long does an opened bottle of Pink Port keep?

An opened bottle should be enjoyed within about a week, stored cool with the cork back in. Its fresh, young style means it loses its crispness faster than an aged tawny.

Does Martha's Pink Rosé Port pair well with food?

Yes, it works well with light starters, strawberries, ice cream, or as a refreshing drink over ice with a sprig of mint. Its gentle sweetness and acidity make it flexible for both food and cocktails.

Where does Martha's Pink Rosé Port come from?

It comes from the Martha family's vineyards in Baixo Corgo in the Douro Valley, where the family has grown grapes since 1727.
