The whisky comes from Yoichi Distillery on the island of Hokkaido, founded in 1934 as Nikka's very first distillery by Masataka Taketsuru. The distillery still uses direct coal-fired stills, a rare and demanding method that gives the whisky its powerful, smoky character.
