From Mpumalanga in South Africa comes a rum that smells more of a bonfire than a Caribbean beach. Mhoba does things its own, very hands-on way.
Expert description
Mhoba American Oak Aged is a Pure Single Rum from South Africa, distilled from fresh sugarcane juice in agricole style and matured in American oak, bottled at 43%.
The rum comes from Mhoba Rum Distillery in Mpumalanga, founded by Robert Greaves, whose family has grown sugarcane at the foot of the Makhonwja mountains since the 1980s. Mhoba distils on a small scale directly from fresh sugarcane juice rather than molasses, giving a raw, earthy starting point. The rum is first matured in large glass demijohns with charred and cut American oak staves, before being moved to casks from South African whisky for a second maturation period.
