Inchgower Distillery and The Chess Malt Collection

Blog post published in Whisky Magazine no 5

Inchgower Today, the distillery is beautifully situated just outside the small fishing village of Buckie. The distillery was established in 1871 by Alexander Wilson. However, it was actually equipment from another distillery that was simply moved to a new address. A little east of Buchie is a small town called Cullen. This is where the Tochineal distillery was located. It was built by John Wilson way back in 1825, and it was the equipment from here that Alexander Wilson moved to the Inchgower distillery. Thus, Tochineal was shut down. Part of the old distillery still stands and is now used by a local farmer.
Inchgower is probably one of the very few distilleries that has been owned and run by a local council. It had to step in in 1936 to save the business when the Wilson family went bankrupt. Two years later, Arthur Bell's bought the distillery for the princely sum of £3,000. With the merger of Bell's and the Guinness group, and the subsequent purchase of this company by DCL, Inchgower became part of the large multinational company that today is called Diageo.

The whisky from Inchgower has always been a significant ingredient in blends, and has very rarely been bottled.[1]pet as a single malt by the distillery owners. The freshly distilled "new make" from Inchgower has a reputation for being coastal with an intense spicy flavor.
