Lavender and incense on an otherwise unforgiving Islay coastline, as if the distillery has for once thrown open the chapel door and let something entirely new inside.

    Expert Review

Ardbeg Spectacular is an Islay Single Malt Whisky matured in ex-bourbon and port casks and bottled at 46%.

The bottle was released as Ardbeg's official Ardbeg Day whisky, and for the first time ever the distillery let part of the spirit mature entirely in casks that previously held port wine. The rest rested in ex-bourbon casks, and the two are married together so the fruit sweetness of the port can speak alongside Ardbeg's usual peat and smoke without drowning it out. The whisky is neither chill filtered nor coloured.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Lavender and incense candles mingle with a rich, almond-like nuttiness, while damp peat and woodsmoke sit as a deep base underneath.

    Palate

Sweet leather and dark chocolate meet a cool, almost minty freshness, before the soft port fruit steps forward.

    Finish

Salted caramel and ripe pear in a long, smoky finish that never turns too sweet.

Frequently Asked Questions about Ardbeg Spectacular

What makes Ardbeg Spectacular different from other Ardbeg releases?

It's the first time Ardbeg has let whisky mature entirely in port casks, giving it a floral, almost incense-like aroma not found elsewhere in the distillery's range.

How smoky is Spectacular compared to Ardbeg Ten?

The peat is still there, but the port casks add a layer of fruit and flowers on top, making the overall impression less unforgiving than the distillery's core release.

    Is Ardbeg Spectacular worth it?

As Ardbeg's official Ardbeg Day release with a brand-new cask combination, it appeals to the enthusiast who wants to taste the distillery from a new angle, without needing collector-level scarcity or age.

Should Ardbeg Spectacular be drunk neat or with water?

Try it neat first, so the port fruit and lavender notes can fully unfold, and add only a drop of water if you want more sweetness to come through.

Which glass suits Ardbeg Spectacular best?

A tulip-shaped whisky glass gathers the floral notes well, letting you follow how lavender and smoke take turns leading.

Can Ardbeg Spectacular be used in cocktails?

It's built to be enjoyed neat, but the port sweetness also works well in a simple Old Fashioned if you want to experiment with the smoky character in a drink.

What defines Ardbeg as a distillery?

Ardbeg sits on Islay's south coast and is known for one of the island's most uncompromising peated styles, one the distillery usually holds onto regardless of which casks the whisky ends up in.
