With single malt whisky, barley is converted into malt, water is added, and the mixture is allowed to ferment. It is then distilled in a large copper still. Single malt whisky is made both in the Scottish Lowlands and the Scottish Highlands. Just as the natural environments of these two regions are very different, the whiskies from these areas also taste quite distinct. Lowland whiskies are milder in flavor compared to Highland whiskies, which can have a more robust and nutty taste.
