Old Perth - Blog post by our whisky taster Jan Autzen

Old Perth - Blog post by our whisky taster Jan Autzen

In short, Old Perth originated in the city of Perth, Scotland. Here, local wine merchant Peter Thomson started blending whisky in 1908. Today, Old Perth is owned by Morrison Scotch Whisky Distillers, which also produces the following brands. Cárn Mór, Mac-talla, Bruadar and Old Perth.

Blended whisky is a bit of a maligned type of whisky in the connoisseurs' world. Either you're into it or you just can't stand it. Whether it's because the Single Malt wave has taken over the snobbery or because Blended Malts typically have names that sound like something you clean rims in. Wittons, Dunstone, Bells, yes many of the cheaper whiskies that just burst onto the front page of Lidl and Aldi's offer catalogs.
Old Perth would for me also have been such a... blend, no I think I'll find something else, type of whiskey.

Old Perth brands itself as "The finest Sherry matured whisky" and when a whisky is matured on sherry, well then it catches most people's interest. I'm lucky enough to have been allowed to dive into a PX cask and a Vintage from 1994, so let's see if these blends can do anything.

Old Perth Pedro Ximenez 56.2% ABV
This bottling was released in February 23, so it's not some old bottlings that have been found in the old stores at whisky.dk - This bottling has added 1 fill Sherry Butts and Hogsheads.
Aroma: Strong Sherry, Sweetness, Dark Chocolate, Apricots, Caramel
Taste: Chocolate, sweet fruits, especially the plum flavor creeps in.
Aftertaste: A delicious and rich aftertaste that lingers for a long time. A rather leathery flavor
Assessment: I don't think it's a bad whisky, I'm just not completely "blown away" There are bottlers that give a much more nuanced sherry flavor, but as a blend it is a very fine bottling and yet you are left with the feeling that you are looking for Single Malts anyway.

Old Perth Vintage 1994 44,6%
It's a little different with their Vintage 1994, here I'm sure that they offer a bottling that should give it a real treat.
Aroma:
Raisins, mashed sweet fruits, caramel, sweet licorice
Taste:
Velvety smooth delicious whisky with a slight undertone of sherry, for me there should be a bit more flavor considering the age
Aftertaste:
The delicious citrus note that lingers long after is actually quite pleasant. It's not dry at all and I would think a 1994 bottling would be able to sit on the tongue for a long time before you need to rinse the palate again.
Assessment:
I find it incredibly exciting and then again I don't. Vintage whisky from 1994 is definitely worth considering and yet you are left with the feeling that there are far better bottlings than what Old Perth comes up with.
However, if you remember that we're talking about blends, it's definitely worth mentioning that they know what they're doing, because it's not a bad whisky to enjoy. In a blind tasting, I would NEVER have guessed that it was blends you were tasting.
Old Perth is a tribute to the old virtues, but sometimes the classics are overtaken by the new originals.

Factbox:
Blended whisky is a type of whisky that is made by mixing several different whiskies together. These whiskies can come from different distilleries and can be both single malt and grain whiskies.
Blended whiskies are the most popular type of whisky worldwide, accounting for around 90% of total sales. Blended whiskies can have a wide range of flavor notes, depending on the different whiskies that have been blended together.

A Single Malt Whisky is a type of whisky that is made from 100% malted barley and distilled at a single distillery. Single malt whiskies are usually older than blended whiskies and have a more complex flavor due to the single distillery and long aging process. Single malt whisky is a smaller part of total whisky sales worldwide, but it is still very popular among whisky enthusiasts.
The difference between blended and single malt whisky can also be reflected in the prices. Blended whiskies are usually cheaper than single malt whiskies as they are made from several different whiskies and can be simpler in taste. Single malt whiskies are often more expensive as they are made by a single distillery and have a more complex flavor. In terms of global sales, blended whiskies are the most popular type of whisky, while single malt whiskies make up a smaller proportion of total sales. This is partly because blended whisky is more accessible and often cheaper than single malt whisky, making it more popular among mainstream consumers. Single malt whisky, on the other hand, is more popular among whisky enthusiasts and is often seen as a more exclusive and luxurious type of whisky.
