The name Coffey doesn't refer to coffee, but to inventor Aeneas Coffey, whose 1830 column still design is still running at Nikka's Miyagikyo Distillery today.

    Expert Description

Nikka Coffey Grain is a Japanese Whisky distilled on an original Coffey column still and bottled at 45%.

While most grain whisky is used as filler in blends, Coffey Grain is built to stand on its own. Nikka acquired its two Coffey stills in 1963 and 1999 and is today one of very few distilleries in the world still using this older distillation technique to produce a standalone, fully mature grain whisky.

Frequently Asked Questions about Nikka Coffey Grain

    What is a Coffey still?

It's a column still invented by Irishman Aeneas Coffey in 1830, which distils continuously rather than in single batches, and is typically used for grain whisky.

Why does Nikka Coffey Grain taste so sweet and fruity?

The older Coffey still retains more of the oils in the spirit than modern column stills, producing an unusually creamy, tropical, fruit-forward grain whisky.

Is grain whisky inferior to malt whisky?

No, it's a different style - Coffey Grain shows that grain whisky can stand entirely on its own, with a body and complexity that matches many malt whiskies.

Does Nikka Coffey Grain work in cocktails?

Yes, its creamy, sweet style works excellently in an Old Fashioned or a simple highball.

Is Nikka Coffey Grain worth it?

Yes, as one of the world's few standalone Coffey-still grain whiskies, it offers a unique flavour experience hard to find elsewhere.

When did Nikka get its Coffey stills?

Nikka acquired its first Coffey still in 1963 and a second in 1999, both still in use at Miyagikyo Distillery.
