Moonshine from the USA - Get the story here

Moonshine is known from the Discovery Channel, we give you the story behind the phenomenon here.

Get the story behind Corn Whiskey or Bootlegging

The history of Moonshine Whiskey or Corn Whiskey goes back hundreds of years. However, it was in the years 1920-1933 that Moonshine whiskey really had its heyday. In 1920, the United States introduced the "the noble experiment" which prohibited the distillation of strong spirits. However, this law was met with great resistance and many people began secretly producing whiskey outside the system.

The illegal whiskey was distributed at night by moonlight along small country roads, hence the name Moonshine. At the time, there was a huge demand for the illegal whiskey and the mafia quickly moved in on the market. This meant that in 1925, a historic amount of moonshine whiskey was sold underground in Chicago, New York and Atlanta. The law prohibiting the distillation and sale of hard liquor was repealed in 1933 and in just 13 years, Moonshine whiskey had become a legend across the US. Moonshine is synonymous with illegally produced spirits.

Of course, Moonshine was a 'big brand' during Prohibition in the US - it was the only way to get your hands on spirits. The only alternative was to take the consequences and travel to Canada, Mexico or Cuba to enjoy spirits, drinks and cocktails there.

However, the concept existed long before and still exists today - in Denmark we call it moonshine

Moonshine was characterized by a 'coarse-grained' distillation and the importance of quickly erasing traces. Aging was therefore out of the question, and the spirit did not achieve the softness and flavor notes of, for example, spices, nuts and caramel that aging in oak barrels would have given it.

The name Moonshine comes, of course, from the fact that distillation often took place outdoors at night in the 'moonlight'. Bootlegging refers to the brave men and women who delivered the spirit to consumers in pocket labels tucked into boot shafts or delivered in jam jars.

From the US, we've bootlegged several versions of legal moonshine.

Whiskey from Kentucky distilled solely from corn and aged less than 30 days - a great example of how moonshine has tasted in its time. To live up to the desired authenticity, it is delivered and sold in jam jars. 40% alcohol by volume.

Georgia Moon is crystal clear with a penetrating aroma of sour likør (sour as in lime/lemon) and sweet corn.
