Fary Lochan Snaps - our blogger Thomas Heie Nielsen explores

Fary Lochan Snaps blog

Learn more about Fary Lochan's Snapse flavors in this blog post, where our blogger Thomas Heie Nielsen explores the exciting flavors from the distillery in Farre.

Post by Thomas Heie Nielsen

What sounds Scottish is as Danish as it gets. Fary Lochan is a Danish distillery run by three siblings and their mother. The name Fary Lochan comes from the old name of the town of Farre, which Fary Lochan is located just south of Give in Jutland and Lochan is the Scottish term for a small lake. The small lake is located a few hundred meters from the distillery in a westerly direction and is part of Omme Å.

Fary Lochan is probably best known in whisky circles. That's what they started out with, and founder Jens-Erik Jørgensen has a huge passion for whisky, which has its own unique character. Every year, the family goes on a picking trip in the local Farre forest for nettles, which they then use to smoke their malt barley. The idea of using nettles for smoke comes from founder Jens-Erik Jørgensen's childhood on Funen, where his mother made the Funen specialty smoked cheese smoked on nettles. Evil must be driven out with evil, so it's good that you can take revenge on those nasty nettles by burning them.

But this time it's not about whisky. It's going to be about some of the other products that Fary Lochan produces. Namely Schnapps

Then we'll get to the schnapps, as they say. I taste three schnapps. Nettle schnapps 36%, Elderflower schnapps 36% and Walnut schnapps 36%.
Then it's time for the schnapps, as they say. I taste three schnapps. Nettle schnapps 36%, Elderflower schnapps 36% and Walnut schnapps 36%.

Fary Lochan Nettle schnapps
Nettle schnapps 36% is a schnapps made with nettles. Simple. The first thing I smell is chamomile. Lots of chamomile scent. After some time in the glass, the scent becomes more moderate and the chamomile less pronounced. Very fine and soft taste of nettles? Well, I don't have much experience with nettles other than a large pot of nettle soup with potatoes many years ago on a camping trip. This is very much a "ladies' drink", if you dare say so without offending anyone in these times of gender struggle. The alcohol is all the way down to 36% and the taste is sweet chamomile. This is almost the schnapps answer to a romantic date.

Fary Lochan Elderflower schnapps
Elderflower schnapps 36% is a schnapps made from elderflowers. I smell elder, herbs and wildflowers. Lovely floral scent. Lovely taste of elderflower. The schnapps has an oily fattiness and natural sweetness. Smooth and soft but also a bit of spice that piquantly protrudes on the palate. This schnapps is actually more complex than the nettle schnapps. Surprising. I hadn't expected that until I tasted it.

Fary Lochan Walnut schnapps
Walnut schnapps 36% is a schnapps made with walnuts. If you're a schnapps girl like me, you've probably tasted walnut schnapps before. I've tasted more than a few handfuls of walnut schnapps from different Danish distilleries and it's always an experience. The aroma is walnut, freshly polished leather and some mild dark spices. There is always a sort of cask character to walnut schnapps. It's as if the walnuts add some "barrel" to the schnapps. Sweetness, richness, spice and color. Unfortunately, I think the walnuts are a little sparse. The schnapps appears a bit "thin" and slightly bitter on the palate. Perhaps a rounding off in a small sherry cask could work wonders?

Walnut Schnapps Cocktail. Fary Lochan recommends this walnut schnapps as a cocktail shaken with ice, vodka, lemon juice, apple juice and a strip of ginger. Top with 2-4 cl. sparkling wine. That sounds really delicious to me. A real summer cocktail.

I think Fary Lochan has a good approach to their production and products and they have some exciting and lovely products and I haven't even tasted their whisky. Yet! Also try their schnapps for the lunch table.

FUN FACT:
Just today as I write this review, Fary Lochan has won the audience award in "Sol over Gudhjem - Kokkekonkurrence" with their Blackcurrant liqueur. Congratulations to them.
