New blended whisky Chivas Regal Mizunara

New blended whisky Chivas Regal Mizunara

One of the big players in the blended category is the world-renowned Chivas Whisky, read here about one of their new variants that has been aged in used Japanese casks.

Why age whisky in Japanese Mizunara oak casks?

Mizunara is oak that originated in Japan and may seem at first glance to be the natural choice for a Japanese whisky producer. However, Mizunara oak was first used during World War II, when the demand for whisky increased in Japan and it was almost impossible to get European or American casks to the country.

Japanese Mizunara oaks need to be a couple of hundred years old before they can be used for casks. Furthermore, they don't grow straight, but often have unevenness, which of course makes the cooper's craft considerably more difficult. The wood is porous, which often results in leaks in the finished barrel. Perhaps most importantly, they give off a lot of flavor. As you can see, there are actually several reasons not to choose Mizunara oak, and these casks were previously considered inferior.

Over time, however, it has become apparent that if you let the whisky mature for 20 years or more in Japanese oak, the picture is completely different. The taste becomes more rounded and integrated with the character of the freshly distilled alcohol, and the notes that emerge are quite unique, interesting and tasty.

Mizunara casks are nowadays expensive and sought after, so when Chivas Master Blender Colin Scott announced that a new Chivas aged in these casks was coming, we were very excited.

The aroma: Chivas Regal Mizunara is rich and fruity on the nose, presenting aromas of pear and orange
Flavor: Soft and rich with a honeyed sweetness and hints of hazelnut.
Aftertaste: Mizunara casks are praised for providing a subtle yet distinctive spicy finish
