Lagg Whisky - Blog posts by Steven Kramme

Lagg Whisky - Blog posts by Steven Kramme

Our whisky blogger Steven Kramme had pretty high expectations for the new Lagg Whisky. Can they continue the high level of excellence that Arran has, or is it something else entirely? Get the answer about the Lagg Kilmory whisky here

LAGG Whisky is a brand new distillery. That is, it's not brand new, as the real name is Arran. They are not particularly known for making smoked whisky. Their smoked whisky has been called Arran Machrie Moor, which is named after the peat bog they get their peat from. I don't know if they will continue this series, but they have now built a distillery dedicated to the smoked whisky called LAGG Whisky.

The two distilleries are located at opposite ends of the island - Arran at the north end and LAGG at the south end.

Nose: There is immediately a distinct dry smoky smell in the nose. It's actually quite pronounced and there's no doubt about it. I can almost smell the salty sea in the whisky. However, it's not a hammer that hits you. There is also room for a bit of vanilla. I also smell a bit of green apples. All delicious. However, it is the smoke that dominates.

Pallet: In the taste, there is again, ok with smoke. I actually think it's very balanced. If you like smoke, it's really nice. You taste the sweetness from the bourbon barrel. It's quite nice. It's something most people would like. I think it's a tiny bit boozy myself. It probably has something to do with its young age.

Finish: It's not super long, but it's very pleasant. I'm actually impressed by how nice it all tastes. Especially considering how young the whisky is.

There has been a lot of hype around this whisky. In fact, it's already a bit difficult to get your hands on bottles from LAGG. But is it worth the hype? I think there is a lot of quality in this whisky. They really know their craft. However, I would say that with a little more age, it would really be a fantastic whisky. For me, it's a bit raw in expression. It needs a few years in a barrel to file off the rough edges.

So, to answer if the whisky is worth the hype? It might be. But I will look forward to LAGG to age a little more, because then I think it can be really good.
