Have you tasted Big Peat 12 years? We have....

From Douglas Laing comes a very smoky whisky called Big Peat - this blog post is about their new 12 year edition.

Have you tried Big Peat 12 years?

Big Peat 12 years Whisky

Here is our experience

Post by Mads Thorup & Kristian Henriksen

Today we had the pleasure of tasting this release from Big Peat. The expectation for the whisky was not up for much discussion and with a name like "Big Peat" and a whisky from Islay, you can expect an intense amount of smoke in both smell and taste. The color of the whisky is almost completely clear with a yellowish tinge, which is not uncommon for a smoked whisky that has been aged in fresh oak barrels. The aroma brings back memories of campfires and lightly toasted sno bread under the open sky near seawater, with a hint of citrus hiding in the rounded smoky flavor. On the tongue, the smoky flavor waves elegantly across the taste buds with hints of sea salt and citrus. At the same time, there are hints of the oak cask and otherwise a very balanced and smooth whisky that lingers on the tongue.

Despite the name and the characteristic front figure, which is not unlike Captain Haddock with a pipe in his mouth, this is a very rounded and well-balanced whisky, which means that the smoke does not take over the otherwise lovely classic characteristics of a whisky. If you want to soften the smoke a little, whisky drinkers who don't like a lot of smoke can add 2-3 drops of water to reduce the fullness of the smoke, but not remove it completely. The whisky is perfect to enjoy on a cool summer evening under the open sky and fire or as a complement to summer barbecue barbeque marinated dishes.
