Fary Lochan Gin - our blogger Thomas Heie Nielsen explores

Learn more about Fary Lochan's Gin variants in this blog post, where our blogger Thomas Heie Nielsen explores the exciting variants from the distillery in Farre.

Post by Thomas Heie Nielsen

What sounds Scottish is as Danish as it gets. Fary Lochan is a Danish distillery run by three siblings and their mother. The name Fary Lochan comes from the old name of the town of Farre, which Fary Lochan is located just south of Give in Jutland and Lochan is the Scottish term for a small lake. The small lake is located a few hundred meters from the distillery in a westerly direction and is part of Omme Å.

Fary Lochan is probably best known in whisky circles. That's what they started out with, and founder Jens-Erik Jørgensen has a huge passion for whisky, which has its own unique character. Every year, the family goes on a picking trip in the local Farre forest for nettles, which they then use to smoke their malt barley. The idea of using nettles for smoke comes from founder Jens-Erik Jørgensen's childhood on Funen, where his mother made the Funen specialty smoked cheese smoked on nettles. Evil must be driven out with evil, so it's good that you can take revenge on those nasty nettles by burning them.

But this time it's not about whisky. It's going to be about some of the other products that Fary Lochan produces. Namely gin.

I'm tasting two kinds. Classic Gin 40% and Citrus Gin 40%. I taste them neat - always neat - with a cold Fever Tree Mediterranean tonic and a Folkington's Sicilian Lemonade and of course lots of ice cubes.

Fary Lochan Classsic Gin
Classic Gin 40% contains citrus and cucumber, among other things. Together, they give a fresh, soft and pleasant scent and taste. On the nose, I sense that the cucumber peeks out from the citrus and balances the gin. The taste has a little more spice, sharpness and freshness and then the cucumber is at the back of the taste. An exciting gin that is both soft and friendly, but at the same time has its own character and complexity.

Fever Tree Mediterranean tonic test.
Classic Gin 40% works really well with Fever Tree Mediterranean tonic. In fact, most gins do. Nice and fresh, slightly floral and herbal with a little citrus kick at the end. Excellent gin tonic. Perfect for a hot summer day on the terrace.

Folkington's Sicilian Lemonade test.
There is almost even more of the southern sun and summer on Classic Gin 40% when enjoyed with Folkington's Sicilian Lemonade. By the way, it is always recommended to taste your gin with different good tonics. It's the easiest way to get different drinks with the same spirit when you simply switch out the tonic. It's an experience and you'll find that your gin can do a lot depending on which tonic you use.

Fary Lochan Citrus Gin
Citrus Gin 40% is made on a base of the classic gin. But extra citrus and lime have been added, which adds something extra to the scent, taste and color. The aroma immediately takes you to the Mediterranean sun, summer and fresh, sun-ripened citrus fruits. But the distinctive character of the gin is still present underneath. Citrus Gin 40% appears sweeter and milder than Classic Gin 40%. But still, the aftertaste lingers longer. I get notes of citrus/lime - of course - but also a bit of mint. Lovely gin that is actually a bit spicier and drier than Classic Gin 40%

Fever Tree Mediterranean tonic test.
Citrus Gin 40% is even better with a Fever Tree Mediterranean tonic than Classic Gin 40% is. There's more juice and power to the flavor. There's just more flavor in this gin. The lovely warm citrus notes compliment the tonic really well. Great gintonic.

Folkington's Sicilian Lemonade test.
It's a bit too much "pineapple in its own juice" with Citrus Gin 40% and Folkington's Sicilian Lemonade. It's citrus with citrus on top. Sure, it tastes good. But I think it lacks a bit of edge and the taste is a bit one-dimensional. But if you are completely crazy about and can't get enough citrus, then this is just the thing for you.

In addition to Classic Gin and Citrus Gin, Fary Lochan also has:
Bourbon Gin 38%, which is their Classic Gin that has been in bourbon barrels for almost three years.
Sherry Gin 38%, which is their Classic Gin that has been in small Sherry barrels.
Gin Beech 40%, which is their Classic Gin that has had beech leaves added.
