Winter in North Zealand is raw and quiet, but on the Falkendal farm in Kagerup, a light burns in the old horse stable where Thornæs Distillery finds its own kind of calm in the dark. This is where Falkendal Snaps Vinter is born — a dram that smells of orange peel over an open fire and a hint of frost on the windowpane.

    The Expert's Description

Falkendal Snaps Vinter is a Danish Snaps from Thornæs Distillery, bottled at 41%. The snaps belongs to the distillery's Falkendal range, named after the farm in Kagerup near Helsinge, where founder Torben Thornæs Andersen swapped a career in communications for the dream of crafting Danish spirits in 2018. A trip through the Highlands and Speyside gave him the grounding he needed, and by 2019 production was under way in the converted horse stable on the farm.

The winter edition is built for the darkest months of the year. It is loaded with juicy orange, crisp apple and a touch of fennel, and the result is a round, full-bodied snaps with a pleasant sweetness and a warming finish that lingers. It is made to sit alongside the herring and roast duck of a Danish Christmas lunch, but it works just as well as a warm gesture on a cold winter afternoon.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Fresh orange peel and stewed apple meet a gentle touch of fennel, laying a spiced veil over the fruit.

    Palate

Round and full from the first sip, with a sweetness that drifts into warm orange tones and a hint of sweet spice underneath.

    Finish

Long and warming, with the fennel fading out gently like a winter evening slowly settling into night.

    Did You Know?

The Falkendal range is named after the very farm in Kagerup where Thornæs Distillery is based, inside a converted horse stable. It was here that Torben Thornæs Andersen started production in 2019, after a trip through the Highlands and Speyside had lit the spark for his own Danish whisky and snaps.
