Aberlour a'bunadh Batch 46 Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky 70CL / 60,4%
Some whiskies you drink. Others drink you. Aberlour a'bunadh is the latter kind. Batch 46 is deep red, dense and unapologetic — a classic sherry bomb from the heart of Speyside, bottled straight from the cask without compromise or filtration.
A'bunadh — pronounced roughly "ah-boon-arh" — is Gaelic for "the original." And that is exactly what it is. The series was born when renovation workers uncovered an old bottle hidden beneath the distillery floorboards, wrapped in a 19th-century newspaper. The bottle was analysed, and its style painstakingly recreated: rich, sherry-matured, powerful, and free of modern processing. That is the philosophy driving every batch to this day.
Aberlour Distillery sits in the village of Aberlour in Speyside, at the foot of Ben Rinnes and the confluence of the Lour Burn and the River Spey. Founded in 1879 by James Fleming — whose motto "Let the deed show" still graces every label — the distillery has stayed true to one idea: let the cask do the talking. Batch 46 is matured exclusively in first-fill Spanish Oloroso sherry butts. No chill filtration. No dilution. At 60.4% ABV, it comes out exactly as nature and oak intended.
Nose: Dark fruits lead — plums, black cherries and overripe raisins. Beneath them, candied orange peel, gingerbread and a rich, vinous sweetness from the sherry oak. With water, vanilla and malt emerge alongside something almost tropical. It opens slowly, but it rewards the wait.
Palate: Intense and full-bodied from the first sip. Bittersweet dark chocolate meets dried fruit, pepper and firm oak tannins. A little water softens the edges, revealing caramel, cherry and cinnamon. Something shifts — the harder notes give way to something warmer and more generous.
Finish: Medium-long with bittersweet dark chocolate, pepper and wood. A subtle nuttiness appears at the very end. Warm, rounded and satisfying.

Did you know? During renovation works at Aberlour distillery, workers discovered a dusty bottle of whisky from the late 1800s hidden beneath the floorboards, wrapped in old newspaper. It is believed to have been stashed during the Scottish whisky restrictions of the era. The bottle was analysed in a lab — and directly inspired the a'bunadh series as we know it today.
