Skjern, 2009. The distillery is four years old and the team is still figuring out what Stauning can become. This bottle is the answer from back then.

    Expert description

Stauning 2nd Edition Peated 2009/2012 is a Danish Peated Single Malt Whisky distilled in 2009 and bottled in 2012 at cask strength 62.8%. It is one of Stauning's very first commercial bottlings – distilled just four years after the distillery opened and released while the whisky's DNA was still taking shape. The peated profile comes from floor-malted peated malt, and the high cask strength reflects an uncompromising approach to bottling.

Stauning Whisky opened in 2005 with seven amateurs and rough grain. 2nd Edition Peated represents the earliest stage of a distillery that has since grown into one of the world's most acclaimed. Finding a bottle today is equivalent to owning a piece of Danish whisky's renaissance.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Peat, smoke and a youthful freshness. Bonfire, green notes and a light citrus edge that reveals the short maturation time.

    Palate

Smoke and salt with a spiced core. Cask strength is evident, but malt and sweetness sit behind it. Raw energy and early Stauning character.

    Finish

Long and warm with ash, peat and a light bitterness. It stays with you.

Frequently asked questions about Stauning 2nd Edition Peated 2009/2012

What is Stauning 2nd Edition Peated?

It is Stauning's second commercial bottling ever – distilled in 2009 and released in 2012. A peated single malt whisky at cask strength 62.8%, representing the distillery's very early years when Stauning was still a handful of enthusiasts in West Jutland.

Is Stauning 2nd Edition Peated rare?

Extremely rare. It is one of the very first commercial bottles Stauning ever released. The bottle count was highly limited, and most have long since been drunk or kept as collectables.

Is Stauning 2nd Edition Peated a good investment?

Yes, the assessment is high. Early bottlings from a distillery that has since grown to world status have historically risen significantly in collector circles. This is a piece of Danish whisky history that cannot be recreated.

How does the 2009/2012 release differ from today's Stauning Peated?

The early edition was distilled when the distillery was still experimenting. The grain, processes and equipment were different – the result is a rawer and more youthful expression than the refined versions Stauning releases today.

How is a 62.8% whisky best served?

Start neat to experience the historic profile. Add a few drops of cold water – it opens the whisky and gives more subtle aromas room. A tulip-shaped whisky glass concentrates the aromas best.

Can Stauning 2nd Edition Peated be stored?

Yes. Unopened and stored upright in a dark place at room temperature, the bottle will keep for decades. Once opened, it should be consumed within 1-2 years, as the high ABV only partially protects against oxidation at half-full levels.
