Red, yellow and blue. Those three colours have been on the labels in Watou since the brewery was young, and in 2026 they finally get the stage to themselves. Eighty years of the same recipe, the same yeast, and now a full magnum of it.

Expert description of St. Bernardus Abt 12 Magnum Edition 2026 Quadrupel Beer

Abt 12 is the flagship of St. Bernardus and the brewery's take on a classic Belgian Quadrupel, still brewed to the original 1946 recipe. The story begins just outside the abbey walls. From 1946, the brewery in Watou brewed beer under licence for the Trappist monks of Sint-Sixtus, and brewmaster Mathieu Szafranski brought both the recipes and the yeast over from Westvleteren. The deal ended in 1992. The yeast stayed, and it is the reason Abt 12 smells so wonderfully fruity.

This is a top-fermented dark ale with serious weight behind it: 19.7 degrees Plato, a colour of 70 EBC and a restrained 20 IBU of bitterness. The label lists water, barley malt, sugar, hops and yeast, and the hops are Belgian. No tricks. The magnums are always refermented in the bottle, so the beer keeps evolving for years, much like a good red wine. The brewery actively encourages lining up several vintages and tasting them side by side.

Since 2012, St. Bernardus has released a limited run of 1.5 litre magnums every year. Dark brown glass with the logo in relief, a Bière Belge neck, a branded cork and its own muselet, and a new artist on the label each time. Every artwork ends up in the brewery's own collection. 2026 marks the 80th anniversary, and the 80 Years of Heritage label comes from the brewery's creative lead Pieter Verdonck. He took the yellow, red and blue that Pater 6, Prior 8 and Abt 12 have carried from day one and arranged them into an abstract composition with a very knowing nod to Piet Mondrian.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Beneath an ivory head, dark fruit comes pouring out. Plums, raisins and dried figs, with cherry and warm bread crust underneath. Caramel settles over the lot like a blanket, and as the beer warms in the glass, cloves and a hint of banana drift up from the yeast.

    Palate

Full and round. Plum compote and cherry lead, then toasted caramel, dried fig and a quiet note of coffee through the middle. The sweetness is there, but it never tips over, because the bitterness keeps it on a short leash.

    Finish

Long and bittersweet. Dried fruit and caramel linger while the alcohol warms slowly without making a fuss. The kind of finish that has you reaching for the glass a little too soon.

    Did you know?

The artwork behind the 2024 Magnum edition is a sculpture. The artist Kalbut built Full Metal Bernard entirely from recycled metal, and it now stands at the entrance to the brewery tour. It is 220 centimetres tall and weighs 600 kilos, so it probably won't fit in the gift box.

Frequently asked questions about St. Bernardus Abt 12 Magnum Edition 2026

What makes St. Bernardus Abt 12 Magnum Edition 2026 special?

It is the brewery's anniversary release for its 80th birthday. Inside is the classic Abt 12, while the label celebrates the yellow, red and blue that have followed the brewery from the start. Like every magnum edition, it is refermented in the bottle and made in limited numbers only.

Is St. Bernardus Abt 12 Magnum Edition 2026 worth the money?

Yes, if you want one of Belgium's most celebrated Quadrupels in a format built for both cellaring and sharing. Abt 12 is widely ranked among the best beers in the world, and here it comes as a dated vintage in a limited run. That makes it as much a drinking beer as a small piece of a collection.

How long can you keep Abt 12 in a magnum?

The bottle is marked best before 31.12.2036, which is a quality guarantee rather than a hard deadline. Because the magnums are always refermented in the bottle, the flavour keeps shifting over the years. Store it cool, dark and upright.

Is Abt 12 Magnum 2026 a good gift?

Yes, and one of the easier ones to get right. The bottle is big, handsome and carries its year, so the recipient can open it now or save it for a special occasion. A natural pick for anyone who collects vintage beer or simply loves Belgian ale.

How should you serve a Quadrupel beer like Abt 12?

At 8 to 12 degrees, as the brewery itself recommends, in a glass with room for the head and the aroma. A chalice is the classic choice, but a beer glass like the Riedel Ouverture Beer gathers the aromas nicely too. Pour slowly to leave the yeast sediment in the bottle, or tip in the last drop if you like a bit more body.

What food goes with St. Bernardus Abt 12?

Hearty dishes with game, rabbit or a Belgian beef stew are the brewery's own favourites. A salty blue cheese such as Roquefort is a strong match. And try it with dark chocolate, it works better than you would expect.

How strong is St. Bernardus Abt 12?

It is 10% ABV. The balance between sweetness and bitterness hides the strength remarkably well, though. With 1.5 litres in the bottle, sharing is the sensible move.

What is the difference between Abt 12 in a regular bottle and in a magnum?

The recipe is identical, but the magnum is always refermented in the bottle and filled into a special bottle with an artist label. The brewery otherwise sells mostly young, fresh beer, so the magnum is your shortcut to tasting Abt 12 with some age on it. Without waiting ten years yourself.

Is St. Bernardus a Trappist beer?

No, not anymore. From 1946 to 1992, St. Bernardus brewed beer under licence for the Sint-Sixtus abbey, but since 1992 only beer brewed inside abbey walls may be called Trappist. The recipes and the yeast from that era live on in Watou.

What does Abt mean in the name?

Abt is the Flemish word for abbot. The name puts the beer at the top of the brewery's hierarchy, above Pater 6 and Prior 8. The number 12 belongs to the same old naming tradition as its two siblings.

Where is the St. Bernardus brewery located?

In the village of Watou in West Flanders, right on the French border. The brewery offers tours, runs its own guesthouse and has a rooftop bar looking out over the hop fields. Well worth a stop if you are on a beer trip through Belgium.
