Little Brown Dog presents here an elegant and maritime bottling from Caol Ila Distillery – a 13-year-old single malt that perfectly demonstrates why Caol Ila is considered one of the most versatile and easy-drinking peated whiskies from Islay.
The whisky was distilled on 10 April 2012 and bottled on 12 February 2026 at 55.7%, just a few months before its 14th birthday. It was matured in a single refill butt, allowing for a balanced and gently oxidative development where both cask and spirit interact without either dominating. Little Brown Dog has chosen to keep the style relatively fresh in order to preserve the bright, crisp peat smoke and maritime character for which Caol Ila is so well known.
The result is a whisky described as “wonderfully oxidised” – with superb balance and an elegant Islay profile, where the salty sea air and smoky freshness merge into a highly harmonious expression.
The colour is pale gold. On the nose, it opens with wax candles, malted grain warehouses, and a bonfire of driftwood, immediately placing you by the coast. It is classic Islay, but with a clean and refined elegance.
On the palate, you find roasted almonds, sea delicacy uni (sea urchin), and a “dirty martini” impression, giving the whisky a salty, umami-rich, and lightly oily character. It is a combination of sea, smoke, and nuts that feels both complex and incredibly approachable.
The finish is fresh and lively, with gorse (broom), clear salinity, and a bright maritime peat smoke that lingers gracefully without becoming heavy.
The label reinforces the maritime theme: where the previous Caol Ila release featured a lobster, this one continues the story with a hand-coloured 1876 illustration of seaweed, crab, and a small prawn – a nod to the umami world of the sea and Islay’s coastal identity.
Only 332 bottles were produced, making this a classic, pure, and beautifully balanced Islay whisky for lovers of elegant smoke and coastal freshness.
