There's something about a golden label, a red flame pattern and a gilded warrior seal that makes a collector's ears prick up. This bottle is both a time capsule and a riddle for any whisky lover — Thailand's own answer to a dark spirit, brewed from sugarcane, glutinous rice and a secret blend of herbs that few outside Thailand ever get to taste.

    The Expert's Description

Mekhong Thai Spirit is a Thai spirit distilled from sugarcane and rice, bottled at 35%.

The spirit was first produced in 1941 at the Sura Bang Yikhan distillery on the Bangyikhan canal in Bangkok — Thailand's very first spirits factory. Its name comes from a wave of patriotic sentiment, when Thailand pushed to reclaim territory from French Indochina along the Mekong River, and a popular song about the river gave the new spirit its name. Mekhong quickly became a source of national pride, replacing much of the imported whisky that had until then dominated Thai bars.

The production method remains the same closely guarded secret, passed down through generations: sugarcane molasses and glutinous rice are fermented and distilled, then the spirit is flavoured with a secret blend of Thai herbs and spices. The excise stamp on this particular bottle is dated 26 April 2000, making it an older bottling from before Mekhong's current international packaging.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Sweet sugarcane molasses and brown sugar meet a faint trace of rice, with a spiced lift of ginger and star anise.

    Palate

Soft and warming on the tongue, where the cane and rice carry a distinct herbal character alongside chilli, cinnamon and a touch of vanilla.

    Finish

Long and warming, with a herbal note that slowly settles into a mild, sweet close.

Frequently Asked Questions About Mekhong Thai Spirit

Is Mekhong a whisky or a rum?

Neither, exactly. Mekhong is distilled from sugarcane and rice, which puts it closer to rum, but it's spiced and traditionally marketed as Thailand's national "whisky".

    What does Mekhong taste like?

Sweet and spiced, with sugarcane, rice, ginger and star anise on the nose and a warm, herbal finish. The flavour leans closer to a spiced rum than a classic Scotch whisky.

    Why is it called Mekhong?

The name comes from a patriotic song about the Mekong River from the early 1940s, written when Thailand was pushing to reclaim territory from French Indochina. Thailand's Excise Department named the new spirit after the song in 1941.

What makes this bottle a collector's item?

The excise stamp is dated 26 April 2000, making it an older bottling from before Mekhong's current international packaging design. Older Thai export bottles like this one are rarely seen outside Thailand.

    How is Mekhong best served?

The classic Thai way is with soda water, lime and plenty of ice, though it also works well in cocktails, where the cane and spices play nicely against citrus or ginger.

    Where is Mekhong produced?

The spirit is produced in Thailand, originally at the Sura Bang Yikhan distillery in Bangkok, today under InterBev Group.
