As storms sweep in from the Atlantic, Kilchoman's casks lie maturing in salt-laden air by Machir Bay. Winter 2010 is named after the very season when the island's weather is at its most relentless — and when the whisky's character is shaped the most.

    Expert's description

Kilchoman Winter 2010 Release is an Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky, bottled at 46 %.

Winter 2010 is the last of four seasonal releases from 2010 — after Spring, Summer, and before Kilchoman closed the tradition the following year with Spring 2011. While the naming refers to the release timing rather than any special winter maturation, the bottle captures the same raw, young style that defined the distillery's earliest years.

Kilchoman's location right on the Atlantic coast means the spirit matures year-round in a damp, salt-laden climate — an influence that, even in these early releases, already gave the whisky its characteristic maritime edge.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Sharp, young peat smoke meets fresh sea air and a hint of lemon, with a light honey sweetness in the background.

    Palate

Direct and spiced, with peppery smoke, salted caramel and a touch of green apple that brings freshness amid the intensity.

    Finish

Medium length, dry and smoky, with a final, salty undercurrent reminiscent of the island's harsh winter weather.

Frequently asked questions about Kilchoman Winter 2010 Release Islay Single Malt Whisky

What does the name Winter 2010 Release mean?

It refers to the period when Kilchoman named its releases after the season. Winter 2010 was the last of four seasonal releases from that year.

Does the maritime location affect the taste of Kilchoman's whisky?

Yes, the constant, salt-laden air from the Atlantic leaves its mark on the spirit throughout maturation, regardless of what time of year the whisky was filled into cask.

How does Winter 2010 compare to Summer 2010?

Both are from the same year and share the young, raw style, but come from different casks and batches, giving each release its own individual character.

Is this whisky a good investment for collectors?

It belongs to a now-discontinued seasonal series from Kilchoman's early history, which historically makes this type of bottle rarer over time.

How should Winter 2010 be served?

Best at room temperature in a nosing glass, ideally with a few drops of water to open up the citrus and honey notes.

When did Kilchoman's season-named releases end?

The tradition continued through Spring 2011, after which Machir Bay became the distillery's permanent standard release in 2012.
