Twenty years in oak gives a tawny its golden hue and a touch of nut and orange peel – enough time to grow complex, yet still young enough to surprise with freshness.
Expert's Description
Graham's 20 Year Old Tawny Port is a Portuguese aged Tawny Port from the Douro Valley, matured in oak casks for an average of 20 years and bottled at 20% in a half bottle.
The Port is a blend of several vintages, composed to hit a consistent style every time the house bottles it. Long ageing in oak gives the colour its golden, tawny hue and replaces the fresh berry fruit of a young Port with nuts, caramel and dried orange peel.
Graham's Port was founded in 1820 by brothers William and John Graham and has belonged to the Symington family's portfolio of Port houses in the Douro Valley since 1970. This 20 year old tawny is sold in a 37.5 cl bottle, a practical format for those who want to try the aged style without opening a full 75 cl bottle.
Tasting Notes
Nose
The nose has a characteristic nutty note, combined with mature, medium-aged fruit and a touch of orange peel.
Palate
The palate is rich, softly sweet and full, with toffee, caramel, burnt orange and raisins, carried by a well-balanced structure.
Finish
The finish is long and elegant, with a last touch of dried plums and a faint, earthy, mushroom-like depth.

Did You Know?
This 20 year old tawny comes in a 37.5 cl half bottle for a reason: an already oxidatively aged Port like this one holds up far better after opening than a young, fruity Port, and the smaller format makes it easier to enjoy a glass at a time without the bottle standing open too long.
