Traditional is what the label said back then, and it was not just a word. Through the 1990s Glendronach still ran direct firing under the stills and kept its own floor maltings, and whisky from that period tastes of a production that has since been changed.

Glendronach 12 Year Old Version Traditional is a Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky matured in seasoned oak and sherry casks, bottled at 40%.

The bottling dates from the 1990s and carries the old Traditional designation the distillery no longer uses. The combination of seasoned oak and sherry casks was the house build at the time, and at 40% the whisky is softer and lighter than the later releases, which sit at 43% and above.

Alongside the bottle the set contains six Spirit Sniffer glasses carrying the Glendronach logo. It is a gift presentation that was sold as one piece, and the glasses are part of the whole rather than an accessory bought separately.

Tasting notes

Nose

Sherry and dried fruit, with malt and a dry, almost dusty spice note. There is a waxiness behind it that older bottles often develop.

Palate

Soft and round. Raisin, nuts and pale caramel, with the sherry as a calm undertone rather than the lead. The 40% keeps the whisky light, but the texture is fuller than the number suggests.

Finish

Medium. Malt and dried fruit ebbing away into a dry, nutty close.

Investment potential

Medium. The Traditional designation disappeared from the labels years ago, and bottles from the 1990s cannot be made again. That the set is still complete with its six original glasses makes it harder to replace than the bottle alone.

Billy Walker bought Glendronach in 2008 through the BenRiach Distillery Company and set off the revival the distillery is known for today. In 2017 Rachel Barrie took over as master blender, and she still handles the cask selection.

Is it worth the money?

You are buying two things: a Glendronach from the 1990s with the old Traditional designation, and a complete gift set with six original Spirit Sniffer glasses. Neither is made any more, and an intact set is markedly scarcer than a loose bottle from the same period.

What does Traditional on the label mean?

It was the Glendronach designation for their 12 year old until the range was reorganised. The word referred to the traditional production the distillery ran at the time, and it is no longer used on the labels.

What is seasoned oak?

Casks prepared by holding sherry for a period before the whisky goes in. It is a different approach from using casks that have genuinely been in service at a bodega, and it was common practice in the 1990s.

What are Spirit Sniffer glasses?

Small tulip-shaped nosing glasses that gather the aromas. They are made for tasting whisky rather than drinking it, and the six glasses in the set carry the Glendronach logo.

How does 1990s Glendronach compare with the current releases?

Is it peated?

No. Glendronach does not use peated malt in standard production, neither then nor now.

How should I store the set?

The bottle upright, dark and cool, and the box intact if it is to keep its value as a collector set. On a bottle from the 1990s the cork is the weak point — check it once a year.
